YES I do Ed in my black 65 SS car with an aluminum spool it eats a ring and pinion a year which we attribute to the inherent poor design of the chebbie 12 bolt and the really bad tooth ratio of the 6.14 gears my 6.20 9 inch gears would last 1500 runs easy but the chebbie is at least.005 quicker

Alex, I only have 5.57 gears in my 12 bolt. My gear life is fine, but a 6.14 would likely not be as good. Was not as good with an aluminium spool. Took it out when I cleaned the splines out of the right side on the starting line at Memphis. Could not tell it was any faster than a Strange light wt steel spool anyway. 5lbs dif.

Need to get me some of that lube.
Thanks !!

Btw, you don't have a 5.86 12 bolt Pro gear set for sale, do you?

sorry Ed but the shortest thing we own in a 12 bolt is a 6.00 (might have one of those laying around) problem with the 6.14 is the tooth counts

Thanks Alex! Yep, I ran 6.14 gears on the. '57 Olds/Pontiac rear end in my old C/SM Camaro. Old Zoom gears. Tried everything available for gear lube back then (mid/late '70s) to slow down wear on those few, small pinion teeth. My 5.57 gears last fine, I know a. 5.86 is likely to not last as long.

Thanks for getting back to me.

Alex, when you say Joe Gibbs 'qualifier' gear lube, are you referring to the 70-80 weight?

For what it's worth (and not very scientific), put your hand on the rearend housing after making a typical single qualifying run in the morning, it is barely warm and probably cools right down after returning to the pits. On the other hand, try the same test after hot lapping 3 or more runs, you'll burn your hand doing the same test. Even at that, I doubt that the temp is all that high. Pretty obvious that that a typical drag race rearend seldom gets up to a reasonable operating temp.

Back in the day when VP was in oil business they made GL30-6 which was qualifying oil for nascar. This stuff is like water but it was a great gear oil. I put about around 400 runs on this stuff without any gear failure. Did not do a back to back myself but gave some to a friend who did. His car picked up .03 and 1/2 a mph. In ones search for speed you look for many small things that in the end add up to something bigger than what you had before. Tom
