As for me my son raced JR's and went on to become a very successful racer, winning in most everything he's driven (including a motorhome) while gaining the respect and friendship of his fellow racers. Now I have no way of knowing for sure if drag racing was the thing that helped in developing his way of living his life but I do know that I've never had to bail him out of jail, he's never been in any real trouble and he's become a responsible adult and father. This summer my grandson will begin his JR dragster racing and I'm hopeful that he too will develop the same skills and friendships that my son did. That being said my personal opinion on 5 year olds racing is let's wait and see....I'm sure there are some kids that will be just fine, some not so much, no different from the adult racers we all race with today...there's some good ones and well not so good as far as handling themselves.

Joe…I enjoyed your sensible post. I'm kind of surprised about some of responses to Jim's original and almost hateful post. As parents we all have the best intensions for our children. We have to display positive examples of existence at all times for them to make the best of their lives in this "not so nice society" we all live in. Growing up in the 60's is not like growing up today. Today, we need to keep our children closer than ever and keep the lines of communication open at all times. At 5 years old a child is very influential and listens better, especially to Grandpa. Responsible positive guidance in youth today will put them in the winners circle tomorrow. I think some should analyze their own responses and look at what they are complaining about. Maybe a more sensible approach would be to pick a Youth Member of the JR. community and have the President of the SSSSA work with the kids in a more professional fashion. Oh... I almost forgot, think back to 5 years old how cool it would have been to have a Good Dad and a JR. dragster in a world without all the choices. Safety is one thing and Sharing Professionalism is another. "Just my opinion"…MB.

Your wrong.....Had 3 (2 boys and a girl) THEY BEHAVED when out in public and at home. If they didn't they knew it was hell to pay when their mom or me got them outside. Most do not. Today one is a math teacher, one a civil engineer and the oldest works for the CIA. ALL COLLEGE GRADS. Let me know next time you are trying to have a nice QUIET dinner with friends or your wife and some little $**T screams at the top of his lungs sitting right next to you and " IT's" dumb ***** parents say or do NOTHING or leans over from behind and pukes down your collar or throws food all over your wife's clothes..

Terry, yeah I think we've all been in THAT situation...parents not making their kids behave, sorry buddy but times have changed what used to be an isolated happening has now become the norm. There were 9 kids in my family, we were dirt poor so we did not go out to eat, however we were all expected to be seen not heard be it in public, at church, or at home. That however has little to do with the subject being discussed here...again todays kids are simply being raised differently than your generation and mine, there is a lack of parental guidance and control some of which has been taken away by the many "do gooders". Well intentioned as they may be.... children need discipline, rules and boundries, lets hope that the ones being exposed to drag racing receive a bit of all these things. Merely my opinion, Joe P.S. sounds like you raised so very good kids.

I agree 1000%. Most today let them run wild. No all....but more than should. Thanks for the compliment as I'am proud of how they turned out and they all have great jobs. Just a little nervous about the one with the CIA. Not the safest job in the world. They turned out a lot better than me.....LOL.

Re: Just What We Need!

I just remembered that Capitol Raceway in Crofton Md. started running the Jr's on Saturday MORNINGS only after clogged return roads, and several general close calls. That way all was done by the time the regular cars were coming in to race around 12 or 1 in the afternoons. That cured a lot of problems but some parents pissed and moaned it was to early to get up, their little darlings couldn't get up that early, the parents cried they had to be there all day at the track if dad or mom was racing. Guess they didn't know about class racing and how long it takes at an NHRA event....LOL. Capitol management said its either that or NO JR's at all. Havent heard of any problems since from the guys I know who race there. The Jr's get in and have a great time. Then the track is left for the full sized race cars in the afternoons and eveings.

nhra is going to do whatever they decide to do. I just hope that nothing bad ever happens as every newsreader will be all over it on t.v. just like they continue to call street dragracing no mater how many times you send them e-mails or try and call.It will only take one bad happening. Just look at what happened a few years ago at The Naional Air Races which almost stopped them forever. It will be interesting to see how the insurance carriers for the various tracks react along with various states like "the okkupied republik of n.j." which have racing under rules of the state police. John.....We used to call the state police at the track the GASTOPO STORM TROOPERS. Notice their "skin head" hair cuts and their uniforms and attitudes. IHRA had a race at Atco a long time ago and said screw this and never went back. To much BS.
