Pontiac powered?

No. Don't think so. There are some videos of John's Comp car, on the Mission Garage site. Lots of pics & videos of the Clegg cars, from years past.

http://missiongarage.com/photos.htm

He switched over from Pontiac power many years ago. I think he had quit using Pontiac power, back when he still raced the '73 SD455 Bird, he'd bought new. Not sure exactly what year he switched.

But I'm pretty sure this 3rd gen never had Pontiac power. Obviously I could be wrong. All that info may be on their Mission Garage site.

http://missiongarage.com/

John's son J.B., is also listed as driving an '88 Bird in SS. Assume it's the same car John drove for years. At one time, they claimed it was the quickest SS car. Just out of curiosity, what are the rules for the SS/AS class.

https://www.dragzine.com/news/john-c...er-stock-pass/

I know that J.B has raced their '73 & '74 Birds with Pontiac power, in recent years. But, if they've had Pontiac power in a 3rd gen, I'm not aware of it. Hope I'm wrong. But, it seems that lots of guys are always wanting something that runs a little quicker than the car they have.

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r=100#indextop

There are pics of the '73 Bird with SS/AM on it. I assume this was not with Pontiac power. But again, could be wrong.

http://missiongarage.com/team.htm

The quickest I know of that they ran with Pontiac power was mid 9's, in SS/I, IIRC.
Here's a 9.62 in SS/I. with the '74 T/A.

OK, I got another dummy question for you guys who know what the rules were for AHRA & IHRA.

I seem to remember several differences, from NHRA rules.

I have some pics of the 1970 Knafel GTO, nat record holder. It appears to be running in the 2-FA or FA-2 class. So, exactly what is that ? Is it a Stock class ? SS ?

We attended the World Nats race in Amarillo, in '76, IIRC. We saw a car there named "Packin Poncho". It was a '69 GTO, with a hood scoop. Looks like it ran in the SS3 class. Can someone here clarify the AHRA/IHRA rules, for Stock/SS ?

The Knafel GTO was probably running the AHRA Formula Stock class. AHRA considered this a Stock class but was more like Super Stock, hood scoops, aftermarket intakes, any size tire that would fit in the stock wheel well, etc. Formula 1 was for cars with multiple carbs, Formula 2 was for four barrel cars, and Formula 3 was for 2 barrel cars.

IHRA was Super Stock, I believe they were based on the same formula as AHRA Formula stock but had also had a SS/4 class that was for NHRA legal cars.

oldskool 03-10-2020 09:27 AM

Re: Best Pontiac Powered Super Stockers

Thanks ! Don't recall "Formula Stock". Don't think any of the tracks we ran were AHRA.

Questions:

(1) In the multiple carbs class, does that mean you could run either 2 fours, or 3 twos, on cars that came with only 1 carb ?

(2) Does it also mean that you could run a single 2 barrel, on engines that came with a 4 barrel.

(3) Was there any limit as to what brand or size the carbs could be ?

(4) So the Knafel car was probably running a Holley 4 barrel & aftermarket intake, maybe ?

(5) Cam rule for that class ?

Having dabbled in dirt track racing, I can imagine all sorts of big 2-barrel carbs. There were the hogged out 2-barrel Holleys. Then there was also running 1/2 of a Dominator 4-barrel. Would be interesting to know just how quick the 2-barrel cars were, & the exact specs of the carbs used on those quick cars.

Monte Howard was nice enuff to send me some pics & info from the time when he was driving the Ken Shawver '78 SS T/A.

"Indy USNationals class wins 2007, 2010
Norwalk class win 2007
JEGS sports nationals class win 2007
Rt66 Lucas Oil Div win 2008
Indy Fall Classic win 2007
Clay city KY IHRA div Pro-Am win 2007
Us Nationals semi finals 2012.
Sports Nationals semi finals 2007"

"The 2010 US Nationals class win was a pretty good story.

We went to Indy with a fresh engine, after our first run it was not quite as fast as I would have liked, second run it was slower. I cut the oil filter apart to find the filter full of bearing material. Not in a very good mood. I sat in the trailer thinking we were done for the weekend, I came up with a idea. Thinking my first qualifying run would get us qualified for the show. I decided to head home and put our spare short block in the car. Left the track at noon on Thursday thinking I could have it back together for first round of the eliminator on Sunday. With the help of good friend Dean Davies we started pulling the engine around 2:00 pm Thursday afternoon. By midnight we had the engine and trans out, pulled the heads, Intake, Cam & Lifters, timing chain, oil pan and pump off the hurt engine. My friend was tired and went home at midnight. He asked how long are you gonna work on it. I said well I am gonna work as late as I could. Knowing that if things went smooth that I might be able to make it back to Indy the next morning for class eliminations . I drug out the spare short block that consisted of a block, crank, rods and pistons. Cleaned up all the parts, degreed the cam in, assembled the rest of the engine and had it in the car and fired up at 3:00 am. Loaded the car and all the tools, went in the house took a shower and slept for 45 minutes and then left for Indy. With only 45 minutes sleep we ended up winning class on Friday with a spare short block that I had to scotch brite the rust out of the cylinder walls.
My friends that I parked with at Indy knew when we left Thursday that our plan was to be back Saturday night or Sunday morning. They where shocked when we pulled back in our pit spot Friday Morning. Bill Rink walked over and asked where I went. I told him the story and he said “you are nuts”."

Wow, I've had more problems with pics on this site than any other. MOST, have to be resized 50% or more smaller. The 2nd pic below was clocked 90° to the left. So, I clocked it 90° to the right, & now it shows up 90° to the right, exactly as it is on my computer. So, I tried it straight up again & see what happened. Anybody know why a pic that is correct on my laptop would show up clocked to the left, when all other pics upload correctly ?

Anyhow, this Bird is definitely one of the most competitive Pontiac powered SS cars ever.

I'm probably not the only guy here who likes to see the old pics. I even like pics of the ramp trucks & open trailers the cars were hauled on.

It was a different world from the motor homes & fancy enclosed trailers of today's racing world.

He did run a '72 GTO in SS. I've read that in '72 he was provided with a '72 Bird for Stock, & a '72 GTO for SS.

Went back to his '68 Bird & won Stock at the '73 US Nats.

Here's a 2nd gen Bird that ran SS/AM. John Clegg drove it. It has "PONTIAC" on the scoop.

This model car was not available with a Chevy V8 engine. I'm not familiar with the SS/AM rules. So, is it required that the car run a Pontiac engine, with either Pontiac factory iron heads or alum heads that are NHRA approved for a Pontiac engine ?

It shows up on DRC from 1998 thru 2006. Ran mid 8's.

So, anybody here familiar with this particular car, that could give me engine details ?

Thanks !

We saw it at Amarillo back in '75 or '76. It had "Royce Fowler's" on the rear fenders.

I've found other pics that show what appears to be the same car, with someone else's name on the fenders.

A Google search turned up this article which claims the car is a 1-owner car. So, I don't know what the real truth is.

Yeah, there are a LOT of us old timers who would still be racing, if we had the money to do it. :(

Even local bracket racing cost a lot nowadays. It would cost me well over $200 per race, just to go to a reg bracket race at our local track, 50 miles away. That doesn't count ANY money for the racing equipment.

Hey, according to our race expense records, in 1975, my wife only won $75 for each Stock win. But, that $75 MORE than paid all our racing expenses for the weekend. IIRC, gas was still only about 50 cents per gal. And the entry fee was LESS than $10.

Even in the late '70's, after we started bracket racing, out-of-state, where it was a 3 hour drive to the Sat nite track, and we had to rent a motel room, we won enuff to more than pay all travel expenses for the entire year. Most weekends we made 2 races, 49 total, in '78. Even tho 4 races were washed out, & we didn't win a penny, we still had the same travel expenses.

We now live in a completely different world. It takes lots of money just to stay home, eat, keep the power & AC on, & pay necessary bills.

Not many po boys making the Stock/SS racing circuit, nowadays. I realize, now, that we didn't have enuff money to race. But, I'm glad we did it anyhow. For most who really love drag racing, no other activity can really be a good substitute. Put another way: "Nothing else really does it for you."

But hey, even tho I haven't been able to race near as much I'd have liked to, I still enjoy reading about & posting about the guys & gals that are racing and/or have raced Pontiacs. :)

Re: Best Pontiac Powered Super Stockers

Just to get the facts out there best I remember. The 73 car was custom ordered as a formula 455SD. Drove it for 2 months. Went to Indy. Won D/S. Then over the years raced it in SS/I , J , I A, JA. Then switched to Pontiac big heads. Ran Ss/AM , BM, CM. Started going 8:40s. NHRA said park it. Need to have a 25.5 chassis. To hard to fix. Bought Ken Howel’s 88 bird. Redid car To 25.5 scif spec. Switched to Oldsmobile heads. Finally ran 7.96 in SS AM which was the first 7 second run of a SS with carbs. Meanwhile J b is running the 74 bird we bought from Larry Pacey which is the old HO racing bird. JB set many records with it. Meanwhile the 73 car is in storage. Then I wanted to go faster so I built an 88 back half bird to run in CC/A. Same old motor , smaller @ 396 inches with olds heads. Best run 7.01 @ 202. Then we do a complete rebuild of the 73 car to run SS/H. Has ran 9.75. Trying to run some 9:50s. Quickest old school Pontiac super stocker now. Waiting for Covid to run out so we can beat on the bird some more. Coming up on 50 year birthday. More in it. We will find it. And we also put A 395 inch small block in the 88 bird and run SS /As. Current record holder. So that’s about 47 years on beating on pontiacs 😎

John, I know this is the SS thread. But. since you're here, would you mind giving us the details of the '74 T/A Stocker, which has Mission Garage on it ? Hunter Pierdolla drove it for a while.

It appears to have SD-455 on the shaker. So, is it running an SD455 ?

Was it an SD-455 from the factory ?

I've read that Forest Pierdolla built the car. Did you or J.B. have anything to do with it ? Do you currently own it ?

Now a SS question. Since ya'll redid the '73, what about the '74, the old H-O car ? Is it still together ? Or did you rob parts off it, for the '73 ?

Sorry for all the questions. But, you have all the answers. :)

OK guys, I just found this Q-list that brings up more questions.

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCStory.asp?ID=96912

#35 is Sal Piacentini, driving a SS/MA '77 Bird. I've been told that this Bird was 350 Pontiac powered, and that it is the same Bird that Mike Morgan now racers.

Now, #90 is listed as Al Vanis, also driving a SS/MA '77 Bird. Since the class is the same, I assume that this Bird was also 350 Pontiac powered, at the time.

So, does anybody here have more info on the Bird Al was driving ? 350 Pontiac power ? Who owned it ? Who was the next owner and/or driver ? Is the car still racing ? If so, owner, driver, engine ???

Sorry, but this is the 1st time I've even been aware of this car, and that Al Vanis even drove a Super Stock Firebird.

Another question.

Found this pic of what was painted on the rear of the '72 SS/K GTO that Truman Fields raced.

It infers that the car was an NHRA nat record holder in '72, '74, & '75.

I have a pic with a caption saying that Truman set a mph rec. But, I thought that Truman only raced the car in '72. He won Stock @ the US Nats, in '73, in his '68 Bird.

So, my question is: Did Truman drive the SS GTO after the '72 season ?

Was he driving it when it set the '74 & '75 records ?

If not, who was driving it ?

Does anybody have any race results for the car, when Truman was driving it ?

Don't know if he won any races or got any class wins with it. Anybody have more info about the car ?

Still lookin for pics of the '72 Bird Stocker that Pontiac supposedly provided Truman. Haven't found any proof that he actually raced that Bird. Anybody have pics or info ?

His little Sunfire is one of the top 3 quickest Pontiac powered GT Super Stock cars ever.

I'm sure I've already mentioned that Robert Cruzen ran an 8.90 in class @ Indy, in his little 428 powered Cobalt. Also mentioned that Don won the GT/EA class last year @ Indy & Todd Frantz won the GT/FA class in a 428 powered Cobalt. I assume that all 3 cars run the alum E-head version of the 428.

This answers some of what I wanted to know.

"...Al Vanis...traded 77 Lemans to Bob Michael' for a 77 Firebird S/S..."

So, Al traded his '77 Lemans for the '77 Bird from Bob Michael. He was running SS/MA with it -- same as the 350 powered Sal Piacentini Bird. So, was Al's Bird also 350 powered ?

I ask since weight can be added to most cars in order to run a class lower than it's natural class. But, from what I can find, it appears that there was a 35hp difference between the 350 & 400 SS engines, in '77 models, at that time.

That would require a large amount of added weight. Over 400lbs, if my math is correct.

SS/M is 14 lbs/hp. '77 400 engine had a 285hp factor for SS. 14 x 285 = 3990lbs. NHRA weight was just over 3500lbs, for a '77 Bird. Don't think rules allow that much added weight, to run a lower class, do they ?

http://www.classracerinfo.com/Engine...4&MAKE=Pontiac

http://www.classracerinfo.com/Engine...spx?ENGINE=764

Therefore, I assume that a 400 powered '77 Bird could not run as low as SS/MA. If I'm wrong, someone please explain.

Assuming I'm right, either Bob had a 350 in the car when he had it. Or, Al changed it over to a 350 after he got it. Assuming Al was familiar with a 350, since he'd raced the '74 350 powered Ventura.

As a side note, Sal won the SS/MA class at that race.

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2005#indextop

I love to search for Pontiac powered cars, on the old Q-lists. On the list for that race, besides the 2 birds mentioned, Steve Smith's '92 GT Bird was Pontiac powered, & was #33. Peter Biondo is listed @ #96, driving a 2000 Bird. I assume that was Phil Monteith's "Hatari" Bird, in which Peter did so much winning.

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2005#indextop

If any of this info is wrong, somebody please post the correct info. And, if I missed a Pontiac powered GT car, please post that info, also. Thanks !

Below are pics of a Bird which had:
"Bob Michael
Bob Peters"
on the door. Bob has had so many Pontiacs, I don't if this is the one Al traded for, or not.

I had the 2nd pic labeled "Bob Michael @ Indy". I have no idea what year these pics were taken. But, with solid center wheels, plus Winston on the tower, in the 1st pic, I assume neither pic was taken this century. Probably not the same car Al ran in 2005. I have no idea.

Started running SS/KA. I assume that means a change to a 400 engine. Don't think you can jump up 2 classes, with the same engine, by just removing weight. But, what the heck do I know ? :o

So far, we know that Al got the car thru a trade, from Bob Michael. And we know that he was on the Q-list of several races. What I don't know is who had the car next, or ?

So, there has to be somebody here who knows what happened to this car, after this.

I assume this car is the one driven by Bob Michael, that is #116 on this 1999 Indy Q-list

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r1999#indextop

At this race, Bob is listed #51, driving a SS/KA '78 Bird. Same car ?

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r1999#indextop

Here it is in 2000, as a SS/MA '77 again, in #53 position.

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2000#indextop

So, once again, are we talkin about just ONE car here, raced by Bob Michael, then later by Al Vanis ? Or ?

OK guys, ya'll have patience with me now, again. :o

I realize that some of the questions I ask have already been answered, somewhere in the thread.

However, I can't possibly remember everything I've learned herein, especially about car & drivers I was not even aware of, at the time I'm questioning.

Maybe if this site had a really good search feature, I could find the answers myself. But I'll use a MUCH overused phrase from TV news & politicians: "That being said", I have questions about some of the GT Firebirds that were at one time Pontiac powered, and possibly some that were never Pontiac powered.

(1) The 1st pic below shows the Don Kennedy '92 GT Bird, which I've read was SD455 powered. According to DRC records, looks like Don switched over to his little Sunfire during the last part of the '09 season.

So, who raced the car next ? Is it still being raced ? Pontiac power ? Any other interesting facts or history of this car that might be of interest to some who read this thread ?

(2) In the 2nd pic below, Don's Bird was in the far lane & a white 3rd gen is in the near lane. I have the white Bird listed as belonging to Carroll Warling. Carroll was already racing his '74 A-body in the '98 DRC records.

So, what years did Carroll race that GT BIrd ? What engine ? Any source for performance & race results ? History of car, before & after ? Any good pics ? Checked Auto Imagery. They only have pics of his A & X Body.

(3) Now I have questions about the Biondo driven 4th gen GT Birds. I've seen Sam, Sal, & Peter listed driving a variety of year model GT BIrds. I remember recently seeing a '98 & a 2000 model, seems that I may have seen both on the same Q-list. So, was there only one 4th gen Bird which has worn the "Hatari" name ? OR, has there been more than one ? More than one at the same time ? I know about the 3rd gen Hatari.

I suppose another way to ask the question is: Has there ever been a time when the Biondo guys were racing MORE than one Pontiac powered 4th gen Bird, in the same race, or at least during the same season?

I ASSUME there was only one Phil Monteith 4th gen Bird racing at any given time. But, I've been wrong before. And I've seen Sal & Peter listed driving quite a variety of cars, including the Pontiac powered '77-'78 Bird Stocker.

So, any help sorting all this out for me will be appreciated ! :)

For someone like me who is not familiar with all the Pontiac racer names, these GT cars are very confusing. On most lists, neither the make nor size of the engine is listed. So, with so many GT legal GM engines between say 283 & 455 cubes, how is a guy supposed to know what engine a GT car has.

And to complicate matters even more, some guys who I know use to drive Pontiac powered cars still drive a Pontiac body, with a non-Pontiac engine. VERY confusing, to me. :o

I noticed that Leo Glasbrenner was running a '15 Camaro, in SS this year.

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2020#indextop

Also driving a '14 Camaro in Stock.

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2020#indextop

Seems I remember that when he put both Pontiacs up for sale, he said he'd sell one, but keep & race the other. Since he was racing neither, that brings up the question: Did he sell both Pontiacs ?

If he did sell both Pontiacs, did someone buy them who will continue racing them, in Stock/SS, with Pontiac power ?

Anybody here know the status of Leo's 2 Pontiacs ?

I've noticed that since they moved these Pontiac threads to the Nostalgia section, I get very few answers to any questions. :( For most questions, it's total crickets.

It's like very few guys ever even look in this section. Maybe the powers that be got tired of seeing these Pontiac threads keep popping back to the top, in the Stock/SS section.

Oh well, I enjoyed lookin up all the info & learned a LOT I didn't know, from guys who actually saw these old Pontiacs race, & from some who actually raced 'em.

So, to all who have contributed to these Pontiac threads, THANKS ! I really appreciate it ! :)

Was glancing back thru this thread & saw where I said we'd take a closer look at some of the Pontiac powered GT cars. Several were mentioned, especially those that are currently racing.

But, looks like I never got around to posting some results from the GT cars that were racing back in the earlier days of DRC.

I'll begin with the Don Kennedy 3rd gen. I assume it was his 1st GT car. If I get any of this info wrong, somebody can correct it, if anybody who knows ever reads this.

I'll post some of the car's better info from DRC. I'm pretty sure he ran an SD455 engine in that car.
