Towing/Hitch questions
 
I have a 24ft enclosed trailer. I carry a 3100lb car,a scooter and a few tools.
I was towing with a Nissan Titan crew cab 1500 5.6 gas engine. It did pretty well but after installing air lift bags and a very heavy hitch with a torsion bar style anti sway system the truck would still take a dive when other vehicles would be about even with the rear of the trailer on the highway. I recently sent the Titan on its way,and bought a 2014 Silverado 2500HD Duramax. It is not a 4X4 but has the Z71 package so it sits up pretty high. I know I will need a drop hitch, and I don't mind using the one I have, but will I need to worry with these damn torsion bars to control sway?

The torsion bars are to distribute the weight not control sway. They do make sway control. I would continue to use the torsion bars.

Mr Vassar What i would do first is put my race trailer on level ground and level the trailer and measure from the ground to the top of the trailer hitch where the ball goes. then i would do the same thing to the truck measure your existing hitch to see how much you are going to have to lower the ball on the truck hitch if it's within an inch or two I would say it's ok. and yes i would definitely use the Sway Bars they serve two purposes they keep your truck level and trailer level plus they keep your truck and trailer straight when you have cross winds and also when a semi comes by you. I use a Reese Hitch

The one I have is a Husky. The torsion bars are slightly different, but otherwise same hitch.

We use this one but had to buy a bigger drop for the shank. We pull with a 2023 3500 Duramax Dually & have a 34' Vintage bathroom package trailer.

Make sure you have your set-up according to the instructions & it covers your trailer tongue/gross weight.

A Reese "Dual Cam" sway control with a Reese weight distribution hitch to match your tow vehicle and trailer weight is a Very Good system to use when towing enclosed trailers.

Whatever you are using make sure the ball is rated higher than what you are towing. I see guys with a class 5 hitch then put a class 3 ball mount and ball in it.



You can get 7500lb 2 5/16" balls or 25,000lb. I only tow 6800lbs but have a forged ball mount that is rated at 17,000lbs and a 20,000lb rated ball. Be safe out there.

no comparison to the equalizer hitch which is also made in America unlike the husky

That system is superior to the old style with the chains for connections at the trailer. I have never seen that type. I have a gooseneck and a toter though.

Drop some pressure in the air bags and see if that helps the sway problem.

I towed with a 2500 silverado for year. If you get a good weight distributing hitch and balance your load it can tow pretty well with minimal sway. I put air bags in the back of my truck so when the rig was loaded and ready to go I could level the truck back to its normal ride height.

The hitch 1320 recommended is the one it get. It's a nice product and it works. Just as important is getting your tongue weight of your trailer loaded ready to go. No less than 10% tongue weight maybe shoot for 12%.

One thing that helped my sway issues was to measure the front and back of the trailer when loaded and connected to the tow vehicle on a level surface. The front should be an inch to 1.5" higher in the front.

You can ad a friction type sway control to get even more control if you don't want to invest in the model suggested.

A way to get rid of 95% of the sway is with a dually. A lot of sway is eliminated with all that rubber.
When towing if you are one lane from the Jersey barrier when being passed the wind pressure is amplified plus those SUVs push a lot of air almost as much as the block busses and tractor trailers.
