Scott Kalitta-----rip
Today in the fourth and final round of qualifying Scott was in the first pair out. His car exploded into a giant fireball just before the finish line and continued at high speed thru the shut down area. He hit the nets at the end of the track and was killed in the crash. RIP .....46 years old.....

Re: Scott Kalitta-----rip
I just saw the accident earlier tonight on ESPN. I was so shocked. Never talked with him much but did meet him years ago. Lets all keep the Kalitta's in our thoughts. Never a good day when a racer passes away.

Re: Scott Kalitta-----rip
I have never been there but is that a WALL at the end??? Thats just crazy
|
Re: Scott Kalitta-----rip
Yeah looks like a concrete wall and a short shutdown too. I'm bummed, Scott was a good guy.
Remember Peter Biondo crashed into the woods at Orlando in the Camaro Stocker, could that have been much worse at Englishtown? Maybe the camera perspective makes it appear shorter. |
Re: Scott Kalitta-----rip
It's actually a long shutdown area compared to Pomona and Columbus but what it is the main road that you enter to get into the track runs behind that barrier you saw on TV. If your leaving the track and make a left (I think it's Union Rd) you can actually see the end of the track and the sand. The only thing I think they can to make it better is bring the sand forward. If anyone remembers about 15 years ago in the final of F/C Chuck E. and Johnny West ran and Johnny hit the wall off the start and he was knocked unconcious and the car continued down the track till it met "The Wall" and it burst into flames and Johnny had burns and a some broken bones. E-Town gets enough crap from the surronding areas due to noise thats why they have such a strict policy on no engines beofore 10am or after 10pm so asking the town to give them more room for a new shutdown area is never going to happen. The wall is there to "protect" any cars on the road from being hit by a car going off the track. It's kinda crazy when you think about it.

Re: Scott Kalitta-----rip
Correction...There is a small portion of concrete that juts out into the sand trap along the right side, which may have been what Scott initially hit, which would have steered him back into the sand trap area. But at the speed he was going if he was hugging the right wall that little jut of concrete would have done some serious damage...
