"A" Stick Nationals at Indy!!
I get tired about all of the class controversy out there. I love the class battles, especially at Indy. I want to help in whatever small way that I can. I am highlighting the A stick class for Indy. I will try and add some contingency of my own through folks that also support class racing. I did this a few years back at Topeka. (J stick). I see 4 quality A stick cars so far and hopefully Bob Gipson will get the 396 back in his 65 Vette to join in. Maybe others.
My hope is to have more people on the fence join in to A stick.I also would like to highlight one of my favorite class battles. ( Some people who haven't raced class can't understand the addiction) I think that it can be fun, maybe we can sweeten the pot, not only for the winner, but hopefully a thing or two for the quickest Non qualifier in A stick as well. I have a few things going and will add to the list. If anyone wants to kick in, I am happy to administer and take pics etc at the track. Last time at Topeka, we got some good attention from the track announcers and had a great time. If anyone has questions or wants to contribute, send me an e mail at jimschaechter@earthlink.net. |
Re: "A" Stick Nationals at Indy!!
Jim,
I would love to come to Indy with my two A stick cars but unfortunately zero grade points doesn't get it with NHRA, and I have no desire to go to several points meets just for the right to enter a National Event. I wish you and the rest that do attend the best of luck and I would like to add a $100.00 check to the winner of this great class. PS I will guarantee the winner won't have to wait for their money like some sponsors do. If I receive the address of the class winner the check will leave my office before the rest of the race ends! Re: "A" Stick Nationals at Indy!!
Mike, this year you might get in to Indy with 1 or 2, no faster than Stock is filling up. I only have one, and didn't go to Memphis. But then, I doubt we'll go to Indy. I got into Bristol with zero. Could have gotten in to Atlanta or St. Louis too. Had to withdraw from St. Louis.
|
Re: "A" Stick Nationals at Indy!!
Good point Alan.* The way fuel prices are restricting the sportsman racers travel plans zero grade points may get into even more races next year.* I would love to think I could run Columbus, Indy, and Norwalk without having to go to any points meets. LOL!* Right now it's probably even money we will haul at least one car to the Dutch and run Top Stock in October.* If we're makin the steam I would do it for no grade points just to support Dave but that's too far into the future to predict right now.* Our 396 R & D program is just getting back into full swing so we'll just have to see how it goes.
Hey, will one grade point have any chance of getting into those three events...I doubt it? MK |
Re: "A" Stick Nationals at Indy!!
Mike, there's no longer a National Event at Columbus. If I could get in as many events as I could this year, so far, with zero or one point. I'd bet you can get in Norwalk next year. Not only that Columbus has a National Open this Fall (I think we'll be going), and I think you can go to that and get a grade point, because I got one for the National Open at Bowling Green.
It remains to be seen about Indy. Some are withdrawing with the new rule about qualifying, and I think the car count was going to be down anyway. As I said, I don't think we're going. Stock was not filling up fast at all. I don't think you'll get in with no grade point, but I think getting in with two may be possible, and maybe with one. |
Re: "A" Stick Nationals at Indy!!
The race @ Columbus in September is a Sports NATIONAL event. Not a open. And you can get in at the gate with no grade points. Indy has the Fall Classic in October which is a Open event. It also has Top Stock being contested!
|
Re: "A" Stick Nationals at Indy!!
Man you would think I should know about the Indy Fall event since I'm a cash sponsor of Top Stock!LOL
Hopefully it's not the same weekend as the Dutch? MK |

Re: "A" Stick Nationals at Indy!!
I don't have an A/S car or money to sponsor the race but i think this is a great idea (as was the J/S one) and Her Majesty bestows knighthood on lesser men.
|
Re: "A" Stick Nationals at Indy!!
It's all good Tom. Everyone can make a difference. My brother and I were testing this weekend with our little 283 J stick car. Every run from now until Indy is for one purpose. To get into Indy! I couldn't say with certainty that I would have anyone in J so I picked A stick. I really appreciate what we have. We are pretty fortunate to be able to focus on such a great sport like Stock class racing with all that is going on it the world. Let's make it the best competition we can. I don't think there is anyone out there that doesn't appreciate an A stick car on the line. I am just figuring that with a little bit of effort, we can pick one class and show them that we appreciate the show. Anyone else have a favorite class? Nothing wrong with picking one and going for it. Jim.

Re: "A" Stick Nationals at Indy!!
Currently there are 6 cars entered in A/S at Indy:
Ralph Porpora Rich Adkins Tom Baird Brett McFarland Jason McCormack Bob Gipson The quota is 180 cars; currently there are 93 entrants. Bill Seabrooks - superfan1 |
Re: "A" Stick Nationals at Indy!!
Who's gonna do it? Some good cars out there. A couple that might still jump in too. Many brands here. These aren't all Camaros either.....
Adkins and Bailey. This car is bad! Nitro Joe stats show this car as a crusher in B. If he can hook like this in A, then hang on. None of this slush box stuff for this Ford/Shelby, well you know what I mean. Check it out http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/h...nsBailey-1.jpg Porpora. this East Coaster is likely to show up anywhere and with two killer Rat motor stick cars under his grip, he gets plenty of seat time. The car works too. Those damn X pipes give me a migraine though...LOL http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/h.../ASporpora.jpg MCFarland- The car has been around. This car looks to have had a makeover of sorts. New dual youngblood clutch seems to have helped his short times too. He always had the power, but now look out! One to watch too. http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/h...SMcFarland.jpg McCormack- Not too many can even dream about a parts eater like this and yet Jason makes it look easy. That being said, if the track gets greasy, he will have his hands full with all of that engine. Finally, a MOPAR guy that knows that racecars have clutches!!! (Relax, I am just trying to work you guys up a little LOL) http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/h...Smccormack.jpg Gipson- Sold his killer Chevelle K stick car to focus on this one. This car does't do anything half way. The car can have a hook advantage, and the rat motor runs like a smallblock on crack! The tuning windo is narrow and can put a guy in the wall. I have driven this car in A and a couple of times, it makes you feel like a bull rider waiting for the bell to ring so you can jump off. Note to self, if you aren't in front of this car in 3rd, you aren't gonna pass it. http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/h...ter/vette1.jpg Baird. Perennial East coaster who is not afraid to mix it up. Fast if not controversial, he can get the job done. New tires and some can do attitude could rule the day if he gets one of his trademark solid runs. http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/h...er/ASBaird.jpg Henderson- This Gold Card owner spent too much on paint this year and can't make Indy....or can he? Rumour has it that he sold the 67 doors on ebay and ordered new rings and bearings. Watch the entry list for this guy, if he shows up, he is the hunter, not the hunted. http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/h...er/ASTroyH.jpg Some other possibles. Where is Waldo (couldn't resist) Helms, Dykema, more? I am still taking on more support for this show if anyone is interested. Let;s get the interest up. Youhave to admit, if none of us ever have an A stick car of our own, you have to appreciate the ones that are out there. |

Porpora's X pipes do have a rather unique sound on both the A/S and the SS/B. Speaking of SS/B; class elims. should be as good as those in A/S. Only 4 cars so far, but they are top quality. Paul Adams - '64 Ford T-bolt - his 1st time out at the D1 race in Va. he set the SS/B record at 8.97,148.41 Ray Pacquet - '64 Ford T-bolt Ralph Porpora - '66 427 'Vette Jimmy Bridges - '66 427 'Vette Two T-bolts and 2 'Vettes, Ford vs. Chevy; it doesn't get much better than that. See you at Indy bright and early on Wednesday morning Aug.27! Bill Seabrooks - Bridgeport, Ct |
Re: "A" Stick Nationals at Indy!!
Just got another product pledge for the A stick Class winner. Check this out! Who says no one cars about a class win! Funk that! LOL! Jim.
I'll supply a new technology, R2C Performance 14" round Competition Series air filter for the winner. Retail is around $90.00. ( these come in 3-4 or 5 inch height so the winner can specify and will have one sent to them) |
Re: "A" Stick Nationals at Indy!!
Dwight Southerland says he will cough up $50.00 if this car enters and shows at Indy. Maybe he can car pool with some other East coasters. Record Holder has had some awesome video on YouTube.
This would be a treat to see this one jump in. Anyone out there know Steve? Maybe he can make it out to the Big Go? http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/h...asFicacci2.jpg Dwight Southerland says he would kick in $100.00 if Steve Ficacci comes. Anyone know if he is considering the trip? |

Re: "A" Stick Nationals at Indy!!
Well. I just looked at this thread and if my old buddy and fellow Top Stock originator Mike Keener can kick in $100 for the A/S stick Champ at Indy then so can I. To bad they wont run the sticks and automatics together at Indy for a larger field of "A" cars. Maybe next year they will be combined? Anyway......as soon as I get the "Official" word and the name and address of the A/S winner a check for $100 will be on the way to him (or her). Will Travis Miller be doing the tear down inspection? Re: "A" Stick Nationals at Indy!!
Nice Going Terry Bell! Glad to see you jump in and help out the A/S guys. See what a mess we started back in 2000 LOL! Hell, didn't you and I post 500 each at the first T/STK event at Norwalk?
Anyway I'm really glad as I'm sure you are to see T/STK is still alive and well and the spirit of A/Stock is fun to see as well! I'm with you though I wish they would combine at least the higher HP stick and auto cars together so it could be a bigger shoot out for the cash. We proved the point that the sticks and autos were equal when we started T/STK and it surely is backed up by the Hemi cars too. I sure don't see anybody rushing to get rid of their auto's in that class! Mike |
Re: "A" Stick Nationals at Indy!!
Holy smokes! We could have a real deal here if everyone sticks to A! Look who else is coming to dinner!

I can't stand it! This will be great! Looks like the field is set, now let's see if all the cars can make it in A!
Let's hear from ya if you want to kick in! Let's support the extreme abuse of these cars! jimschaechter@earthlink.net http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/h...hter/helms.jpg |
Re: "A" Stick Nationals at Indy!!
Hi Mike......To bad you dont have the "POINTS" to enter the "BIG GO". You know what I always thought about that points crap. Yep.....It was $500 of our out of pocket $$$$ to get Top Stock started PLUS a lot of time, phone calls, emails and taking abuse from the very ones who raced the program and others. If it hadnt have been for a racer frendly guy like Bill Bader and IHRA it would never have happened. I tried to pitch the idea to Bob Lang a year before IHRA allowed it to happen. To bad we had all of the other crap shoved down our throats after the first race at Norwalk. If it had been handled correctly and certain sponsor people would have stayed out of the rules process I believe it would have been bigger than Pro Stock was in 1970 when it started. Oh well......HISTORY ! Now on to the reason of my post......Whats wrong with the rest of the people on this site? Why dont you come off of your wallets and support something like this with $25.....$50.....$100??? I know manufacturers are reading this site every day also. Is this going to make you go broke? Why not show some support for a class such as this? Along with the A/SA, B/S stick and automatic classes cars and a few others these are the "BAD BOYS" of stock elim. It takes a bunch of $$$$$ AND tallent to run one of these monsters and these cars were NOT meant to "Bracket" race like some of the so called professional stock racers seem to do. The Div. One Top Stock program that Dave Ley has going is a sucess and would be bigger and better if they could recieve some support and race in front of a good fan base instead of in the middle of the week at the opens. Ive seen the spectator/fan reaction and it is a hit. The rumor is stick and auto just might run together next year at least in the upper HP classes so could you imagine the class run off with all of the A/SA and A/S cars listed on the Indy entry list this year going head to head !!! It would put the PRO boys to shame. OK....Im off my soap box for now. I wish ALL entrys to Indy the best of luck. Terry Bell

Re: "A" Stick Nationals at Indy!!
Mike,
Freshen up your stuff because there will be some drop-outs before the race closes. |
Re: "A" Stick Nationals at Indy!!
The right time, place, and atmosphere for a race like this would be at the Dutch Classic in October.
Along with the Hemi Shootout, You'd definately see some jaw dropping passes from "A" Stick cars at that venue! The AAO (Amish Air in October) is "killer" One of the best non-grade point events in the country! Sg |
Re: "A" Stick Nationals at Indy!!
Bruce,It's happening as we speak but we have no grade points to get in.* Just no time or desire to chase them anymore but we will likely show up at the Indy National open in the Fall, and perhaps if we could get enough willing sponsors and interested racers to put up enough money, more cars would show up?I'm already sponsoring Dick Butlers T/STK program for 100 per race so perhaps Dick would be willing to change the weight break for that event "as a trial" so that more cars might possibly show?* With the current NHRA HP ratings 8.25 pounds perfactored HP plus 170 for the driver is is just too heavy.* I know I'm not to hot about racing my 396/375/400 carrying 3470 pounds of weight.* Maybe* a good trial weight for one event would be 8.25 pounds per factored HP including the driver?Anyway, sorry to have gone "off topic" here but I'm glad to support the A Stickers at Indy and good luck to all racers in EVERY class!

Re: "A" Stick Nationals at Indy!!
Mike,
I'm not sure about this but it is worth checking into. Go to Bowling Green and get a grade point and then enter Indy if some racers drop out. If allowed, I think you can enter at Bowling Green for Indy with the D 3 folks. |
Re: "A" Stick Nationals at Indy!!
Just heard Bret Velde made the maiden voyage in his A Stick Mustang. This is a supercharged car. I heard first pass went 11.25@113 just pooching it and shutting off early. More later if he makes more runs at the Cordova test session. Hot and Humid is the story there today. Jim

I guess if I can't sell it, we might as well race it. We just got home and really learned a lot! Once we got some bugs worked out it went 10.85 at 124.80 first round. I still have a long way too go, but I will be out there pounding on it every chance I get!!! I just want to thank everyone who came over and offered their support and willingness to help. Re: "A" Stick Nationals at Indy!!
Hey racers! We are getting close to bridging the $1,000 mark for class winner in $$$ and product. If you are on the fence here, this is a time to oconsider helping some cool racers put on a show for us and really show some appreciation. this has been great so far!
At the cordova Points Meet SS and Stock Pontiac Racer John Corcoran offered up a $50.00 gas card for the winner! Pretty cool! If you have any contacts that are interested in Class racers and want to chip in, here you go. I can make it easy for you. I am keeping track of the pledges and will arrange all contact info. I must be insane, but I think it proves my point. We can offer so much for such little individual effort. This type of activity rewards performance and class runoffs. If you would like to contribute, I can help. I think that all of the talk on the internet here is fine, but unless you put your walk with the talk, well we all know what that is. Using the power of the internet to support the sport that we love is the key here. Thanks, Jim Please e mail me at jim schaechter@earthlink.net. |

News just in that Ralph Porpora is putting in $100.00 for the A stick Challenge!! Over 1,000 bucks to the class winner in cash and prizes!!! I am having participant shirts for the drivers made that I am donating. Getting close! If we get some of the cooler weather that we have had lately, better hike up the wheelie bars! Jim.

Thanks Mike. Might be another pledge coming too. Still not too late. I know Bob Gipson's Corvette has a crack in the case of his Jerico. Will be making some calls to Jerico for replacement. If anyone has a DR4 case with the large front bearing let me know. Thanks, Jim.
