Calvin Queahpama passes
Longtime Northwest stock racer Cal Queahpama died on Friday, August 30 at Warm Springs, Oregon. Cal was a real gentleman and one of the most decent guys I ever met, in any walk of life. He would always greet you with a smile and handshake. Cal's 283 powered wagons and 4-doors were always a lot of fun to watch, especially when they got huge handicap starts.
Cal was 67 years old. |
Re: Calvin Queahpama passes
That is indeed sad news. Cal was a racer's racer and a real gentleman. The world needs more people like Cal Queahpama. Condolences to his family.

Re: Calvin Queahpama passes
Sorry to hear about Cal`s passing. The "Big Q" was always a very quiet yet friendly racer, who I remember watching him when I was a kid in the early 70`s. I hadn`t seen him out at the races for the past couple of years, since his son died. RIP Cal.

Re: Calvin Queahpama passes
Of Northwest Stock Racers these 3 names jump up immediately for me: Method, Queahpama, and Kost. Seems Heaven's entry list keeps growing. Although Bill & Calvin are not with us right now, the same can't be said about their spirit and respect.
Rest In Peace. |
Re: Calvin Queahpama passes
I'm saddened to hear that. He was an institution at the Div 6 races, he always ran really well.
For instance.... this is the race where Bobby DeArmond ran the "9", Cal outqualified him. http://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCSt...r2001#indextop |
Re: Calvin Queahpama passes
Cal was mentor, a customer, and mostly a friend.
I'll always consider myself lucky to have known Cal Q... Definitey one of the nicest poeple I've ever met in life, or in racing. "Rest In Peace" my friend, your family is in our prayers. Larry Fulton |
Re: Calvin Queahpama passes
We are saddened to hear of Cal's passing. We feel very fortunate to have been able to spend some time with Cal away from racing having a meal and discussing a broad scope of topics. I will miss that a lot.

Re: Calvin Queahpama passes
Cal only came west a few times, but meeting the big man was a treat.
only a fellow 283 wagon racer could really appreciate how fast he was with 4000 lbs & a powerglide, not to mention the lil ole 4gc in the air he usually ran in... and he NEVER got to use the bogus 459 327 intake! hope the family has the same peace as cal now has jack mccarthy |
Re: Calvin Queahpama passes
I know this is a bit tardy, but I did not know Cal had passed until I heard Bob Frey mention it during yesterday's Sportsman show from Seattle. Rest in peace old friend, now you and Conrad are together again.
I ran into Cal in 2007 or 2008 and he filled me in about Conrad. I went to high school with Conrad, and he was one of the influences that got me started into drag racing. Cal mentioned that he had quit racing regularly after Conrad died, but had come out to the track for a combo race and mostly to see old friends. I'm guessing that must have been one of his last races, I'm glad I got to spend some time hanging out with him. Regards, Michael Pliska |

Cal was truly a Drag Racing icon. He will be missed greatly. God speed Calvin. Jim

Re: Calvin Queahpama passes
I know this thread is 2 years old.
But Cal was quite a gentleman. We had to rerun him 3 times in the final round of the 1980 Fall Nationals at Seattle. He just got the car ready and raced didn't bi*tch a bit. The first run they said we broke out with a nine second run (imposible even for us). The second run the win light came on in Cal's lane well before either car got to the stripe. The third time was a charm for Cal and he got the win. I hate to admit it but we would not have been as easy going. Cal and Ray (Tex) now know the true story of what went on that day. |
Re: Calvin Queahpama passes
My memories of Cal were his quiet manner and his wit, he always wore a different hat at every race that we saw him at and there was always something political with a humorous twist and very right on point. Good man,he will be missed. Our sincere condolances to his family.

Re: Calvin Queahpama passes
I knew Cal for many years as we both raced 283 cars way back in the 70's, in 1982 he purchased my 66 R/SA 283 wagon and raced it for years. I quit racing while I was raising my 4 daughters but regardless of how long we went between seeing each other he ALWAYS greeted me with that trade mark great big "warm" smile and a good solid hand shake. As has been said in every way possible; Cal was a good man and someone you would be proud to know, I was... He would do anything to help anyone! God Speed Cal... "You're the man" :)
