Live from Columbus Sportsnationals!
Well we didn't make it for test n tune. Seems like something always keeps from leaving when we want to. But we are now on our way for the 450 mile trip. Left home about 6:45 this morning. Should get there at least by 5, in time to park and tech.
I will update after we get there. Coming thru Louisville there didn't seem to be too much hurricane damage on the route we took. Looks like it is going to be crazy there this weekend with the Ryder Cup there. More later. Patsy |
Re: Live from Columbus Sportsnationals!
Patsy -- Glad you and Larry could make it as I couldn't ---- looking forward to your reports ...........

Re: Live from Columbus Sportsnationals!
Well we still aren't there. Got to about Carrollton, KY (between Louisville and Cincinnati) and the oil pressure idiot light starts yelling at us. So we turned around and went back to Louisville to Whayne Supply ( the CAT dealer) since he knows and works for those guys some times. So now they are going to check it out. Better safe than sorry.
I see on the schedule that they are parking til 11 tonight, so hopefully we will be there by then. Wish us luck! Patsy |
Re: Live from Columbus Sportsnationals!
I just got off the phone with Larry and he thinks they will be on the road about 12:00 AM. So with that being said we are going to fill in for Patsy for a short time. We made the track today aout 2:30 this afternoon, and it was a beautiful day. We are pitted by Terry Nagel, Ben Wenzel,Gary Tompa and Denny Ford. Denny had to go into Columbus to get a fuel presure regulator this afternoon.Tomorrow looks to be pretty good as far as weather goes. The weather channel has the barometer at 30.27 and steady, and the forcast looks great. I don't see Ton Sheehan's name on the entry list but he is often here and I would like to get educated on posting pictures like he has in the past. They were great.
Enjoy the evening and get ready to run, fast I hope! |
Re: Live from Columbus Sportsnationals!
Well, here we are live from Louisville, Ky from the truckers lounge at the CAT dealer. We had an o-ring seal on the injector split and leaked diesel fuel into the oil. They are working on it and hopefully we will be out of here in a couple of more hours.
We can't be in our motorhome while they are working on it, but Larry went and rescued our laptop. We are going to order pizza an hope to be out in a while. More later. Patsy |
Re: Live from Columbus Sportsnationals!
Patsy Marissa wants to know if she needs to bring a "Good" bottle of wine? She has already packed a cheap bottle with me but says she has some good stuff if needed?? ;) I'm hooked up & ready to go. I'm going to leave about 6:am should be their about 8:am ...Marissa is coming up in the evening. OH & she has the stuff for chilli! :)
|
Re: Live from Columbus Sportsnationals!
Well we finally made it here about 1:30 am. Bright and early at 7, they were pulling us in and parking. By 7;30 we were parked and eating breakfast. Talk about challenging--taking a shower with Larry yelling back and saying we're moving now. Oh well, needless to say I took a short shower trying to hang on. We are about ready to tech and should not have any trouble making the first call at 10.
Greg, tell Marissa I like the cheap wine, too. I am making chili tonight, so all are invited. More later. Patsy |
Re: Live from Columbus Sportsnationals!
We had 60 stockers 1st round. Judy McCormack is #1. Denny Ford and Dave Edwards had trouble. Jerry Bennett broke a transmission shaft ( I think). He is borrowing Larry's spare Pro-trans and is trying to get ready for the next run. We get 2 today. Lots of cars more than a second under.
More later. Patsy |
Re: Live from Columbus Sportsnationals!
Jerry got his car fixed, so he should be able to make the clean-up run. Bill Owen has come in this afternoon, also. Kevin Helms is driving Brad McFarland's Corvette. He is here with the hemi car, too.
Velde's car doesn't seem to be going very well. It is pretty slow here for 2100'. We have slowed way down. Well more later. I am going to get things ready to fix chili. Patsy |
Re: Live from Columbus Sportsnationals!
Well, got everything set up ready to cook chili and guess what--I put in an empty tank of propane. Then we thought there was going to be a Jegs cookout, so we decided to do chili tomorrow. Then now Jegs is having a band tonight but not any food (whoopee!!). So anyway Mike and Janice Fuller are going to get us another tank of gas tonight and we are cooking chili tomorrow. So we had hot dogs tonight with Fred and Barb Suiter.
So Jerry Bennett made the last run and spun a bearing, so he is out for the weekend. Fred Suiter 2-stepped thru the lights on his 2nd run so he didn't get a time. We are slow and don't know why. Judy McCormack's family is mad because she went too fast. Don't know why Darrell Steiger was DQ'd. But his is not a 73 Duster. It is sublime green Dart. Real pretty. If you see Rick Winchester. ask him how he got the cut on his forehead. (It had something to do with bending over to get another beer last night over at Greg Hill's). Having a great time here as usual. Janice Fuller and I rode around in the golf cart this afternoon with a little drink in hand and saw a few racers. We run at 8 in the morning, then class at around 11. The weather is absolutely wonderful. Sunny and warm, down to about 50 tonight. So more tomorrow. Patsy |
Re: Live from Columbus Sportsnationals!
Patsy,
Thanks for the reports. Makes it easier to sit out a weekend. At least there's only a week to wait for Memphis. Good luck, and hope Larry finds out why it slowed down. Say hi to Keith Lynch for me if you see him. |

Re: Live from Columbus Sportsnationals!
Well we picked up a little this morning. But we went down with Barton--he went 10.11 to our 10.29. Doesn't look good for us in class a little later this morning. Looks like it is going to be a beautiful day. Clear skies, 81 for high. It is really wet out there today 97% humidity. They have called superstock up, then it is SC, then class. Jerry Bennett is already headed back to KY after spinning a bearing in the clean-up run. Don't know if he will have it fixed by Memphis next week or not.
Wish us luck in class. I think our only chance is for everybody else to screw up, but you just never know! More later. Patsy |
Re: Live from Columbus Sportsnationals!
Patsy,Larry, Great looking car. Good luck today. Maybe you will tune up a tenth here and there....Columbus is an altitude track without an adjustment if that helps.... Dick Butler

Re: Live from Columbus Sportsnationals!
Well, as you can see on DRC, Larry redlighted against Randy Wilkes 1st round of class. There were a lot of redlights that round. Just went up and watched the hemi shootout. Really great looking cars!
I don't know when the 2nd round of class is being run, but left in A/SA are Barton, Wilkes and Lynch. They have already drawn for the bye and Lynch got it. So Randy is icing his down trying to get ready for Barton. Wilkes won at Indy so I am sure Barton really wants to get him back. It is still a really nice day. The barometric pressure is getting better but the temp is up to about 80. I met Bret Velde and his wife this morning. Really nice people. More later. Patsy |
Re: Live from Columbus Sportsnationals!
Larry,
We appreciate all the good "insider" information. Can you tell us which engine is in Barton's A/SA car? Is it the "NASCAR" single 4bbl Hemi engine, or a Stage III wedge? Thanks for any info! Bill |
Re: Live from Columbus Sportsnationals!
Bill,
I believe they are running the race hemi. |

Re: Live from Columbus Sportsnationals!
Are the Wescott Hemi cars both sticks? I see Jr went 8.51 at 155 and his dad ran over 157 mph.
That's the worst part about these new class designations. We can't tell a stick from an auto as easily. On the other hand we now can in Comp. |
Re: Live from Columbus Sportsnationals!
Thanks, Bruce and Tony. I don't recall seeing a "single 4bbl" Hemi in Stock, before, so I'm going to assume that this is the "NASCAR" version of the 426 Hemi that reportedly, the Teutons were attempting to race before NHRA added horsepower to it (ostensibly, before anyone got one operational.)
Looks like it may be a viable "candidate" in spite of NHRA's knee-jerk sharp pencil... |
Re: Live from Columbus Sportsnationals!
Carroll Shelby worked with mopars years ago--Im sure any combo is approved, from nascar to any Shelby--Try his great chili mix--yum:confused:
|
Re: Live from Columbus Sportsnationals!
Hi,
Barton's car is the Nascar hemi--paper car just like the Shelby Fords. Charlie Westcott, Sr. beat Jr. in the Hemi shootout with a stick car. Heard that Jr.'s car is up for sale and he is going to run a stick also. Congrats to all the winners in Class today. Just wish they had run class a little more timely. It was almost dark before the finals were run. Met Greg Fulk's wife Marissa today. They brought over some really good wine. Made in Ohio, too. And a note for Jeff Teuton--we drank it out of proper wine glasses! They have a really cute doberman puppy named Annie that was attending her 1st race, I think. Looks like she is going to fit in nicely. Went around this afternoon and took some pics of some stockers, but it will be after I get home before I try to figure out how to post them. Tom Sheehan came over this afternoon and tried to explain how, but hopefully I will get it figured out. Thanks, Tom. We run 1st round in the morning at 8 so I think it is beddy bye for now. More tomorrow. Patsy |
Re: Live from Columbus Sportsnationals!
how about some pic of the dobe
|
Re: Live from Columbus Sportsnationals!
The dog is in the picture with Greg and Marissa whenever I figure out how to post them!
Well we are on our way back to KY again after 1st round. After not running the cuda for 6 years, Larry is still figuring out what it likes. This morning there was such a heavy dew--98% humidity that the windows would fog back up as soon as you would clean them. And at 55 degrees it wasn't warming enough to keep them dry. But anyway our car did not run its number. But Merkle had us beat on the tree anyway. So now we go home and get ready for Memphis next weekend. Interesting run next round--Fletcher and Fuller heads up. More later. Patsy |
Re: Live from Columbus Sportsnationals!
Patsy,
Thanks for taking the time to keep us updated on all the action. I hope George and Jerry get their car fixed before Memphis. |
Re: Live from Columbus Sportsnationals!
Barton's car is the nascar hemi with the short track manifold not the bathtub long track manifold. The car is real fast 4.02 in 330'.
Hope this answers your question. As always "Paper" covers stone |
Re: Live from Columbus Sportsnationals!
Thanks ffor the information, Larry.
It may be a distinction without a difference, but it would appear that this engine (the so-called "NASCAR HEMI" that's in the NHRA Stock Car Classification Guide) was an actual engine, run on circle tracks in 1965, or thereabouts. Conversely, there seems to be no legimate documentation I've been able to find (including asking the GT 500 registrar for the national SHELBY Club, that there was ever a 1967 GT500 (428) offered for sale by Shelby, with a single 4-bbl intake manifold setup. The other engine specs that are in the NHRA Blueprint Guide for that Hemi may be as lacking in histtorical significance, as are some of the Shelby specs... which may well qualify it as a "paper car," indeed, but at least, at some point, that engine DID EXIST, though perhaps with different technical specifications. Maybe none of that matters, I dunno.... Still a "paper car," but not QUITE like the Shelbys.... |
Re: Live from Columbus Sportsnationals!
I am trying a picture I took at home.
Didn't work. Trying again |
