Live from Kansas City Nat'l Open
Well we are on our way! If the racetrack got as much rain there as we have got in Kentucky today, I sure hope they have a lot of paved parking. We have not been to Kansas City since 1991 when we stopped by there on our way to Denver (the only time we have been to either). Sure hope they have scoreboards now. And maybe more than a single light bulb for the win light.
We plan on driving to the west side of St. Louis and finding a Wal-mart for the night and then driving the rest of the way hopefully not in the rain in the morning. Talked to the cheese guy, Mr. Terry Grohz (sp?) and he is sending cheese by Steve Koppein, so come on by and try it out with us! More later Patsy |
Re: Live from Kansas City Nat'l Open
Patsy -- No paved parking here in Reynolds - good luck with the rain .Tomorrow it is supposed to hit here -- we'll see .All of us should gone to the Dutch Classic as they have extra fast record setting weather there -- spoke to some friends there a little while ago and its great this year -- figures ! ! ! Not sure if its a record but was told a Hemi car went into the 8.40's zone.............And don't forget the cheese............

Re: Live from Kansas City Nat'l Open
Hi Larry and Patsy:
YES to the scoreboards, YES to the light bulbs, NO to the paved parking. At least not much. The rain has moved out (of south central Kansas), so hopefully you'll arrive to sunny skies! You'll be there early enough not to have to worry about parking down by the river. Wish I could say the same for us. Glad you're coming to Kansas City! |
Re: Live from Kansas City Nat'l Open
Well, we got as far as Warrenton, MO last night. Construction around Mt. Vernon, IL cost us over an hour of stop and go traffic. But we are back on the road now. We should get to the track around 1 or so and it shows the gates open at 3. It is sprinkling rain on us now. Hopefully it will all be gone by the time we get there.
We didn't get away as early yesterday as we meant to so we didn't take the kind of out of the way direction as we wanted to. Our plan was to go to Sikeston and eat at Lambert's--the home of the throwed rolls. Really good food if you are ever in Sikeston. Well we are back on the road again. Colors should be at peak. More later. Patsy |
Re: Live from Kansas City Nat'l Open
. Well we are here! And for those of you who know my husband and how he has no concept of time, especially this year, We are actually #2 in line. We could of been #1 but we decided to follow a nice Super Comp racer in since we had not been here in 17 years. We just went up and walked around and yes there are scoreboards, but no tree, or at least lights on the tree. I guess they will assemble it all later. There is some paved parking which we should be able to get.
Rob Parks is here and said they would begin parking soon. The grass appears to be pretty wet, but at least it isn't raining. It is still really cloudy and probably about 50 degrees . Supposed to have test n tune from 6-10. Just finished a nice fried boloney sandwich! You haven't lived til you have had fried boloney! More later! Patsy |
Re: Live from Kansas City Nat'l Open
Well it is 2:55 and they haven't started parking us yet. I guess they really meant gates open at 3.
Dave and Mrs. Dave Picht are next to us in line. It rained pretty hard a little while ago, but now the sun is shining. It's showtime. There are pulling us in. More later. Patsy |

I love fried baloney sandwiches. White bread...mayo...onion..pickle...tomatoe....cold beer. Life is good.
Fried baloney and eggs is also good. |
Re: Live from Kansas City Nat'l Open
Well test n tune got cancelled after it rained again and was pretty cold. Mid 40's.
So we are in watching Passtime on the Speed Channel. Stock and superstockers who have pulled in this afternoon: Dave and Bev Picht, Larry and Jason Deforrest, Don Duke and Jamie Kilgore and families, Troy Henderson, Danny Byrd. Haven't seen the Koppein's yet, but I had to have some Wisconsin cheese with my wine since my South Dakota cheese isn't here yet. We get started about 9 tomorrow. It is supposed to be about 40 in the morning, but then sunny and 62. More later. Patsy |
Re: Live from Kansas City Nat'l Open
The website says qualifying was changed to 10AM instead of 9. Is this not accurate?
|
Re: Live from Kansas City Nat'l Open
Well it is a bright, beautiful day here at KCIR. And COLD. I will go out and check the weather in a bit and report, but I sure am glad the heat works on our motorhome. This is the 1st opportunity to use it and it works fine!
They have not announced anything yet on the PA and Larry is up teching in. I will let you know when he gets back what time everything starts. More later. Patsy |

Hey Pasty,it`s ironic you mentioned Denver and scoreboards. The one`s at KCIR used to be at Bandimere, and made their way out there around `94. Have fun this weekend, that`s one of my favorite tracks! Lane

Re: Live from Kansas City Nat'l Open
Well they finally started down the track around 10:45. They ran, sst, sc, then stock/superstock combo. 43 cars made the 1st pass. Larry almost took out the tree. I haven't talked to him yet. He went up to the starting line after he made the run. Hopefully nothing is broken, but he had to get out of it, so we don't have a time. Doesn't look like there is going to be but 5 or 6 in top stock. They were not announcing who anyone was much, so I have a lot of red cars, green cars and black cars with a time . Supposed to get 4 runs today.
More later. Patsy |
Re: Live from Kansas City Nat'l Open
We had 45 cars on our 2nd run. They have not posted any qualifying. After lunch I will try to figure it out and let you know. We got a good run that time. 10.31 and 127 mph.
More later. Patsy |
Re: Live from Kansas City Nat'l Open
I guess the tower is trying to make me feel at home here, like I am at the Kentucky Derby. When they call a new class to the lanes, they play the "Call to the Post" like at a horse race. Pretty cool!
Well I will try to do my Nitro Joe imitation and give you the qualifying after 2 runs: 1. Greening-O/S -1.329 2. Shaffer-GT/MA--1.256 3. Van Lant-D/SA--1.254 4. Goertzen- D/S--1.252 5. M. Jones-G/SA--1.250 6. Town-GT/LA--1.221 7. Moock-M/SA--1.201 8. Dyer--n/s--1.125 9. Henderson-t/st--1.123 10. Stinnett-b/sa--1.120 11. Shaw-t/sa--1.08 12. Byrd-f/s--1.07 13. G. Greening-i/s--1.066 14. Bogina-ss/da--1.065 15. Voth-gt/e--1.063 16. O'Malley-ss/ja--1.059 17. M. Koppein--t/st--1.058 18. Kilgore-b/s--1.047 19. Cech-j/s--1.044 20. Wells-d/s--1.037 They just called us up for Top Stock, so more later. Patsy |

Re: Live from Kansas City Nat'l Open
Well, we just won 1st round of Top Stock. Unfortunately it was on a break by Troy Henderson. He broke a rod so he is out for the weekend.

Re: Live from Kansas City Nat'l Open
Well, it is another bright sunny day in KC. Sorry I didn't get back and post last night, but wine and cheese got in the way.
We should be starting around 9:30 with a time trial. After we get everything ready to run, I will post more. Patsy |
Re: Live from Kansas City Nat'l Open
Well they just announced we are getting 2 time trials, and then run the 1st round by noon.
To continue with Top Stock from yesterday. Round 2: Stinnett 10.288, 127 beat Larry 10.289, 129 I Think Stinnett running super comp probably helped his pro light. Koppein just made an easy pass for the bye. Finals: It was Koppein, 10.18 over Stinnett's 10.28. I think those were the right numbers. I didn't write them down. In the Stock/Superstock Gamblers race it was Town beating Larry Deforrest. Deforrest bought Irving Johns car that was being driven by Jeremy Duncan. Well we have met lots of really nice people since we have been here this weekend. Tom Meyer brought over a really nice bottle of Nebraska wine from the only winery in Nebraska. We devoured it last night and everyone enjoyed it. We had the South Dakota cheese from Dimock Dairy for everyone to sample last night. We never ate dinner. Just cheese and drinks, but we met lots of nice people. I took some pictures that I will try and post when I get home. Patsy |
Re: Live from Kansas City Nat'l Open
They just called us up for our 2nd time trial. On the 1st the car wanted to go right again, so hopefully this one will be better.
Oh, BTW, Congrats to Mike Koppein for his Top Stock win. And thanks again to Tom Meyer for the wine. More later. Patsy |
Re: Live from Kansas City Nat'l Open
Got a good run in this time.
A few breakages that won't make 1st round: Troy Henderson, Dave Picht, Danny Byrd. More later. Patsy |
Re: Live from Kansas City Nat'l Open
well, we are now on our way home to Kentucky after 3 nice days in Kansas City. Tony Shaffer beat us by .015 in just a good old drag race.
You will never believe who showed up in the pits this afternoon. Bob Unkefer. He lives in KC and brought his wife's Focus there to race in footbrake. It was nice to see him again. He announced the Combo race. Good luck to him in Foot Brake! Neither Don Duke and Jamie Kilgore raced 1st round. I don't know what happened to Don, but Jamie lost a block. I think I left my notebook in the trailer, but when I find it, I will tell you 1st round winners. Everyone be careful going home. The winds are really bad. Right now they are blowing from the North west giving us a tailwind home. We expect to get about 20 mpg going home.LOL More later. Patsy |

Re: Live from Kansas City Nat'l Open
Thanks to everyone that put this together. Thanks especially to Troy and Matt. This was a blast to do something new and all around one of the funnest times drag racing. Hopefully with more support we can keep this thing going next year. A big thank you has to go to my dad who builds one fast piece that I'm very lucky to push the pedal to the floor and show what he can do.
