$5000 stock/super stock shootout???

I am in the process of putting together a five race Stock/Super Stock Open. I have been working on two races up north and three races in the Tri-State area. I drove for Don Wilgis during the last three divisional races and was surprised at the amount of the payout for these races when you pay so much to race at them. I am use to running big buck brackett races where the payout is worth the entry fee. The payout structure at the divisionals is a joke. I was wondering how many racers would be interested in a combo race that paid $5000 to the winner on a $125 entry fee ?

Re: $5000 stock/super stock shootout???

Jim, are you referring to the traditional Tri-State area as in NY, NJ and CN? Where is "up north" from your perspective? I'm just trying to put things in perspective. Sounds like a good concept.

Re: $5000 stock/super stock shootout???

Hey Dave,
Yeah, I am looking at 1 race each in NY, PA, NJ, MD, . The fifth is up for grabs.

Re: $5000 stock/super stock shootout???

Why not Ontario?

Jim, you should get in touch with Fred Smith; info@smithperformance.com. Our CanAm Stock/SS series has been in existence for over 10 years and has drawn as many as 40+ entries. The enhanced purse should draw interest from neighboring states and we usually make room in the schedule for a couple of non-points races. Fred makes sure that the Cayuga surface has "teeth". Less than an hour from Buffalo.

Have one at MIR and you may get some folks from down south! Sounds like a winner depending on scheduling.

Re: $5000 stock/super stock shootout???

MIR is a great facility and Royce is a great promoter. Ontario would be awesome. I know the spectator count is great up there. It's something I would be interested in.

JIm,
How about coming to Ohio? I would love to race a stock/super stock combo for that kind of money!

I love Ohio! Norwalk is one of my favorite places to race. I am up for anywhere we could get a good car count!

Jeff, funny you should mention this. I am in the process of trying to revive the local Tri-State S/SS Association. It started in 1997 with races in PA, OH and WV (I was the announcer) and I took it over and ran it from 1999-2001. It's been dormant for the past few years. But now, it seems like racers are getting fed up with travel costs, long tows, multi day events, and the BS from the sanctioning bodies. I have one track already interested in an event for 2009, hoping to get a few more. Norwalk's schedule was full for 2009, but I am hoping to bring the series back for a few events, like we used to run them and liek the Hagerstown event I do yearly. Hoping to get events at Quaker, Pittsburgh, 42, Thompson and Numida. Maybe Steubenville if racers would go. Not sure how good Magnolia is (you would know, I've never been there). Will keep everyone posted.

I hate to be the stick in the mud, but how about supporting the East Coast Stock/Super Stock Association instead of proposing a brand new group in their backyard? (At least when talking about Atco, RP, CC, MG, and Island)

East Coast S/S Association needs to head south and west. The tolls alone when towing a trailer going to N.J. and Island will bankrupt you not to mention the traffic. C.C., MG, is OK. Atco is a great track and class racer friendly so its worth the tolls and trip.

Jim Helsel 12-02-2008 01:06 PM

Re: $5000 stock/super stock shootout???

I agree with you X-Tech Man, we need to go south and west. There are alot of racers that wont make the trip to NJ for the combos. The tolls are killers also. I do support the East Coast Stock/Super Stock Association and appreciate everything Dave has done for the local guys, I just feel like it could be much bigger and would love to see these classes get TV time and some media coverage. If the payout at these combos are decent the travel cost wouldn't be as hard to swallow. Let's face it, we do this because we love the sport and hanging out with our friends, but if we have a chance to win $5000 while doing it......sweet!

Mike,.
I remember those races. I raced at some of those in the bracket classes when you guys ran at Quaker City. I would like to see them come back. I have a feeling that contigency is going to bad in 09 and races like these that you are talking about might be the way to go. Keep us posted.

Sunday night, I e-mailed the following tracks: Norwalk, Dragway 42, Thompson, Quaker City, Pittsburgh, Beaver Springs, Numidia and Quarter Aces. Norwalk was booked full for '09. Numidia and Pittsburgh have showed interest in having us (waiting on a date(s). Have heard nothing from anyone else. Hagerstown will still have it's annual Lee Sherman race. Date TBA, either Oct 31-Nov 1 or Nov 7-8. Will wait to see if/when Dave Ley has an ECSSSA event in E-town in the fall, to avoid a date conflict. Might have a summer race also at Hagerstown if none of the other tracks are interested. Will keep you all posted.

We all know what a great facility Bob has but he needs to understand that Mountain Dew/ alcohol concoction he puts on the starting line is a joke. Cars won't do the same thing twice.
Might also need to explain he needs something to dry the track-in case it rains. Running street cars back and forth to dry the track went out of style about the same time as flat top hair cuts.

1) Mercury

Onlooker:
2) Something must have changed since I was there last. I raced there for a decade, and the only time we had problems was way back when we had a dirt drag bike track right next to dragstrip, but that is long gone. I *have* seen people complain about how the "track sucks" because of slow 60' times, despite pulling a massive wheelstand... (The rollout is short, and the 60' clocks aren't!) In my experience, BSD has among the best starting lines I've been on, out of 40+ race tracks I've competed at. I'm not saying something hasn't changed, but I would expect that you could discuss any issues you might be having with Beaver Bob himself.
3) We used to dry the track in an hour to hour and a half by running cars up and down the track. I'm not sure what "style" has to do with it -- It worked. And in cases where it is so humid that cars *didn't* work, you would have a moisture problem returning to the surface after running a jet dryer as well. I don't think a jet dryer is financially feasible for such a small facility.

Just my opinion,

Hey Mike,
I also emailed a couple of tracks. I have not heard anything from Beaver Springs but I have two dates set, one at MIR and one at good ol' US13...I should have two more dates buttoned up this week. All four races will be $5000 to win. I will post all four dates ASAP. I also have a huge North VS South $10,000 race planned as well. The plan is to get 64 Stock/SuperStock cars from the North and 64 from the South. Hey K-Robb missed you at the banquet last night, give me a call 443-207-2961

Michael,
I'm not here to bash Bob. He's a good guy and quite a promoter. I consider him a friend. However, the bite at that track is becoming inconsistent at best. He needs to address that situation.

I also understand every track can't afford a $150k track dryer but two of the best 'small tracks' I have raced at use a pick up truck and a front end loader tire to drag the entire racing surface. Low budget-works great.
I'm not here to hijack this thread.

Just my opinion.

You guys can count on the 3 Worner cars supporting your events. I hope alot of thought goes into the date selection for these events. I know for a fact that Beaver Bob would welcome one of these races. The US 30 reunion race is probably his biggest event of the year and would be a great fit with stock/super stock added.

I talked to Bob today and we are doing it that weekend(July 11 and 12) during the Nostalgia Race which is awesome ! We will have a test and tune on that Saturday and maybe a gamblers race or something. Sunday would be the $5000 race. Thanks for your support Tim and I will see you in Florida in February!

That's a great date as far as National&Divisional events. The place has been packed for this event so a great place to showcase this show. I hope the other organizations do not put any other event on top of it so we can have max showing. Looking forward to FL. We plan on stopping by Baton Rouge on the way to Gainesville.

Awesome!

I went to the Events section, where it said to go to your website for more info, where I found the flyer for the event, which said to go to your website for more info... ? What's the payout structure?
