Please Pray for Phil Berg
Our dear brother Phil was airlifted to Holmes Regional Medical Center in Melbourne, FL when the "worst headache that I ever had" turned out to be bleeding deep inside of his brain. He is heavily sedated now in the Surgical Intensive Care Unit and after initial testing today, will have an angiogram Friday morning to try to pinpoint the location and to determine the best course of action.
Paul and I always enjoy racing and working on the race car even more when Phil is there with us. Phil was Paul's partner on the Super Stock Chevelles that they raced in the early-mid 70's - a station wagon that held the SS/Q national record and a SS/O '64 Malibu SS that finished tied for 4th in Division 2 points. Anybody that knows Phil, knows that he is a very special guy. Please keep Phil in your prayers in the days ahead. Thank you and God bless you all, Mark and Paul Berg I/S 2665 and 2664 |

Mark & Paul,
I'm very sorry to hear about Phil. Although I don't personally know him he was kind enough to share some of his old pictures and stories with me. Phil will be in my thoughts and prayers and may God give you strength and peace as you go through this difficult time. Bob Rice |

Re: Please Pray for Phil Berg
I'm thankful to report that no aneurysm was found when Phil had the angiogram this morning, so it appears at this point that surgery will not be necessary. He will have a MRA (Magnetic Resonance Angiogram) early next week, but he appears to be doing well at this point and may be moved from SICU to a regular room tomorrow. He was reasonably coherent when we visited with him during visiting hours, though his stories would take some veeerrrryyy interesting twists when the dope would kick in :) We never saw his eyes open yesterday afternoon, so this was a huge step in the right direction.
Thanks everybody for your concern and prayers. Please continue to pray for Phil, as this is quite a serious matter that he went through and we are still not certain that everything is ok. The one thing that we are certain of is that Phil is in God's hands and there is absolutely no better place to be. Mark |
Re: Please Pray for Phil Berg

Re: Please Pray for Phil Berg
Phil is doing well enough now to have been moved from intensive care to a floor for patients with neuro injuries and conditions. He still is confined to bed, has significant pain and has eaten very little due to the nausea associated with the bleeding in his brain. We understand that the recovery process will likely be long and there will be challenges ahead.
Thank you for your prayers and please continue to pray for Phil and our family. Mark |

Thanks everybody for your prayers and kind thoughts. Your responses have been great medicine for Phil!
He continues to improve - he has less pain, his appetite is getting better and they plan to get him up to walk tomorrow. He has a test scheduled for Friday morning, so we are hoping that he will be doing well enough to come home early next week. God bless you all and have a Merry Christmas! Mark |

Mark,
I'm glad to hear that things have turned toward the good for Phil. I spent some time talking with you all at the last meet and could tell there is a special bond between the three of you guys. All three of you are great people and while we aren't close I consider you all good "racing buddies". Hope all have a Merry Christmas and we'll keep praying! |

Re: Please Pray for Phil Berg
Phil was released from the hospital late Friday and is continuing his recovery at home. Paul, Phil and I and the rest of our family really appreciated your thoughts and prayers with this very serious matter that Phil went through. Please continue to pray for him as he continues his recovery.
Phil was with us at the last SSSSA race at Gainesville and enjoyed talking with a number of folks out there. He isn't a member of Class Racer yet, so he asked me to post a message for him. The following is a cut and paste of the message that Phil sent to me: Good Morning Mark, You know how much I appreciate your help in this time but I'd like to send a personal message (thru you) to the SSSSA. Gainesville (Nov.) was the first time that I've been able to see the 'cast of characters' that make up the SSSSA. They were lotsa fun, as I had an idea that they would be, of course 'HAMMER', has to lighten up on my poor defenseless big brother, Paul. The leadership really tries to make it a fun time, and in time of big budgets in drag racing, it takes you back to a better time when fun was OK. So much for the opening, I want thank each of you for your prayers on my behalf in my recent physical 'scare'. As most of you know, through the efforts of my brothers, Paul & Mark, news got out about my hospital stay and thus your support for someone you hardly knew. Paul & I have been around drag racing since the 'SFTA' in the 50/60s when Ernie Schorb organized drag racing at the abandoned WWII air bases around Miami and have always treasured our friendships. It's mostly a fun, caring group. Mark wanted to get into drag racing in recent years, so he got the '85 Camaro and always liked (as Paul &I) the stick cars, so that's what he got. Needless to say, stick cars, are a lot different that they were when we were racing, so it's been quite an education. Paul, never one to shrink from a challenge (even at 65 years 'young') has really had a great time, plus, the 3 of us really enjoy being together. Sorry to burden you with so much history but since there has been so much drag racing in our past, I thought that I'd share a bit. Back on the 'physical' front, I'm doing well since I got out of the hospital, 12/26. The Doctor is opptimistic about full recovery, so I'm verythankful. I was 'hit' with it 12/18am at work and a couple of those days are 'addois'. It was the worst headache that I ever had along with the water just pouring off my body. I know that this was tooooo long winded but I wanted to give a little of our background. Thanks again for your support, and great to get to know many of you. Phil Berg Thanks again everybody and have a Happy New Year! Mark Bergf |
