Yellowstone Dragstrip

Interesting caption on the front page of the Yellowstone dragstrip in Acton Montana. I wonder if the Divisional race that is scheduled is still going to be run.

Hi Bob,
It has been brought to my attention that the most current operator of Yellowstone has recently passed away and his widow is actively pursuing someone else to carry on with running and improving the facility as her husband had hoped to in the future. This is indeed very tragic and I for one hope that all goes well for the family first.
An active racer has indicated that at this time there are people interested in taking over. Hope the New Year is treating you well. Call me we have some catching up to do. Doug

Re: Yellowstone Dragstrip

My condolences to the family. I would sure hope someone takes over, it's otherwise Montana doesn't have a facility really capable of having a divisional at. It would kinda kill the whole point of me building a car for Stock, unless I travel, alot. I'll have to ask some buddies in Billings what's up, I'm just up in Lewistown.

Re: Yellowstone Dragstrip

iraceitall,
Carry on with the stocker project if that's what you really wanted to do in the first place. It didn't really sound like you wanted to travel much anyhow and you can still bracket race with a stocker. Lewistown ? Hmmm, isn't there a race track in Lewistown and one in Malta probably only 20 minutes from you and Medicine Hat has a National Open and I think that is practically on your doorstep too, Minot is a stones throw away and so is Douglas. Then there is Anaconda and Estevan, heck I wouldn't think the furthest of these 7 tracks and Billings being 8 total would be more than 5 hours from you.

novassdude 01-22-2009 12:16 PM

Re: Yellowstone Dragstrip

I don't know that I would consider Minot when figuring places to race a stocker.

Re: Yellowstone Dragstrip

in these times, you have to run wherever and whenever you can. it isn't a time to be picky.

Joe Toller 01-22-2009 03:38 PM

Re: Yellowstone Dragstrip

I guess I don't mind the traveling, I've done it with a stock car/bump-n-run and demo derby cars for a few years now, but it's nice to be somewhere familiar, I have lived and worked in Billings off and on and have family there. My goal was to take a shot at Divisionals in my home state. I have the track here, so I for sure have a place to bracket race and dial in my combo. Malta is 2 hrs north, I'm anxious to see how that track is coming along (I heard they may go IHRA), and I didn't even think about Douglas. I'll race here regardless, I started racing in high school drags (since nothing else was available to race when I was 16), and have wanted to get back to it a little more seriously. Stock has been my favorite since I got into racing. I'll build the stocker for sure, I had planned on going to Eagle Idaho and Mission BC, but like I said, it was just going to be neat to try to run a divisional close to home.

I heard through the grapevine the Menholt family, who have a huge GM dealership in Billings, are looking to take over.

Re: Yellowstone Dragstrip

I hope youre right but as bad as the car business is and with the new giant dealership and a ton of cars sitting there, he might have all he can do just to keep the doors open on the dealership. Not to mention his dragster and the 2 kids that have new state of the art promod/bracket cars

I know, I saw the site, and as of this time last year it was supposed to have had a buyer, and they held events, but have not seen or heard anything new, was wondering if anyone else had, thanks.

Looks like the track is up for public auction today. I hope who ever purchases it does something great with it, it is a really good facility.

wish i had a sheetload of money.....c'mon lotto...
is it an absolute auction or is there a reserve?

Re: Yellowstone Dragstrip

I hope spoeone can get something done with the terrible road from the hiway to the strip itself. I live in Billings and would love to see the place reopened. My guess as was mentioned earlier is the Menholt family will buy it. He has a dragster & his 2 kids have promods or did a few years back. The strip itself is first class, just needs some more pit paving done bitt is still light years better then most

Re: Yellowstone Dragstrip

Does anyone know the outcome of todays auction and what does the future hold for this track? Is it maybe just an extension of the testing grounds?

I read on another forum the track was bought by a local racer for $310,000

310K ????? An absolute steal. Hopefully they will do well. This is the best small facility I have ever had the pleasure to race at.

Todays Billings Gazette said the winning bid was made by Brett McKinney, not the name previously mentioned. No information was available about him or his plans for the strip

Yellowstone Drag Strip Sells for Under $400,000

by Lindsey Fisher on December 11, 2011

Motorsports may see its revival near Billings, Montana after the Yellowstone Drag Strip sold to a new owner on Thursday. The state-of-the-art facility was sold to one lucky bidder as a turn-key operation. It wasn’t sold for millions, however, but for around the same cost of an average sized house.

Re: Yellowstone Dragstrip

Welcome to Yellowstone Drag Strip - Montana's Premiere Drag Racing Facility

January 26th, 2012
During the first week of January, 2012, Bret McKenney and CW McCarthy completed the purchase of the Yellowstone Dragstrip from Molly Omo. Both are successful local business men with a passion for drag racing. Bret is the owner of North Star Amusements and has been drag racing for three decades. CW is the owner of Powder Kote Unlimited and has been racing his 1976 Dodge Dart for the past twelve years. Both partners plan to be an active part of the YDS management team. They will be working with the racers and sponsors to insure a positive experience during the 2012 racing season and build relationships for the future. Robert Carlson and Dennis McCarthy will be Co-managers for the 2012 season. They will be sharing responsibilities and both come with invaluable experience to the new YDS team. Julie McCarthy-Mavencamp will be continuing her role with YDS as our Marketing and Sales Director. Julie comes with an incredible amount of knowledge of YDS marketing and is looking forward to the opportunity to meet with new sponsors. For sponsorship packages and information, you can contact her here Julie.
We have a tentative schedule with ten race weekends planned for 2012 and are currently working on promotions and feature car races for the upcoming season. This will be finalized by the end of January and will be posted as soon as possible.
Also, A decision was made this week to have Yellowstone Drag Strip become an IHRA Sanctioned Dragstrip for the year 2012.
Get those cars ready, it's going to be an exciting year with YDS!
Yellowstone Drag Strip

Another Western IHRA facility.........shifting tides, great track regardless of sanction. Future Pro-Am maybe?

Kelly,
If NHRA can get a Division director that has a clue about doing his job I may support them again, Until then I feel that IHRA has our best interest in mind. Maybe you can make the haul up to Ashcroft this year and see how it works, Your Duster was a IHRA car when you bought it wasn't it?
IHRA.....It's Mark F$@%&^#g Faul approved!

Sure, What's the salary? Maybe my wife could do it in her spare time? Couldn't do any worse than JA.
I'm not paying NHRA dues until I see them doing something positive for us. MRP is my home track and will be no matter who sanctions them. See ya at the divisional, I'll be the guy running PRO with his stocker and 40 year old lap belts.

I think Jonathan did a good job, but i guess not everyone is always happy. Sure nhra does stuff to piss me off, but am i going to quit? No because i love what i do and alway will. Ill be running stock with my stocker, with brand new 5 point harness!

Re: Yellowstone Dragstrip

Love or Hate either of the HRA's but the tracks still need support otherwise they wont be around. I do like IHRA but being from Alberta I am familiar with them, I dont dislike NHRA but competing sanctions can make things better for the customers (aka the racers....us). Those that chose one sanction or the other are cutting the oportunities to race in half, and that is their choice....as far as DD I think Jonathan did a good job, He cut me a big amount of slack in one instance when he really didnt need to. As for Yellowstone, doesnt matter whose decal is on your car that is still a great facility .......wonder when a schedule will be posted?

Phil, I haven't seen you at any NHRA divisional races over the last 5 years other than Mission so I don't understand what you have to base all your bitching on. DD is a thankless job, I think most of us that run the division 6 circuit appreciated Jonathon's efforts, even if we didn't always agree with him. Maybe you should make Ashcroft (IHRA) your home track.
