Merg collectors

has anyone found more power from adding merg collectors to your headers? i will be running the shoenfeld 1 5/8-1 3/4 step headers and was looking at the dynotech collector. is it necessary?

Re: Merg collectors

There is power and ET to be found in header and collector tuning. The best resource I've found is a program called PipeMax. It is made by an engine builder who does a lot of class engines, his name is Larry Meaux. You can get the software at www.maxracesoftware.com, he has a free ET estimating program as well. Tell Larry I sent you.

Alan, is there nothing you don't know? Man you are genius, apply some of this to your engine building and you'll be at least 6 tenths under the index!

You could also call Mark at Performance Welding, he makes a very good product and they have a vast amount of experience on S/SS style engines.

Re: Merg collectors

We have a set of Mark's (Performance Welding) collectors for the Hooker headers we have. I do think they work, it seems to show some on the dyno, and maybe more so on the track. I'm sure they'd do even better if the headers were better matched to the engine.

With all of the references to Mark at Performance Welding, does anybody know if they are still paying contingency for 2009,or did they drop out too?Last weekend,I removed ALL decals from my car and I am starting from scratch.

Re: Merg collectors

Put a set of performance merge collectors on my headers that Pete Z made. on the dyno gained horspower and torque compared to the stock collectors.

Re: Merg collectors

I had some custom made headers with the supposedly appropriate merge collector installed. Car was lazy off the line. Next weekend I had a merge collector with a substantially smaller neck. Launced like a rocket. In fact, it suddenly had a fuel starvation problem I never had befor on launch. Luckily I had a new needle / seat I wanted to try in the tool box. Installed it and the car was .20 quicker than ever.
Past performance is not an indication of future performance. Individual results may vary.

Re: Merg collectors

I'll report back later...on the car right now is a set of Hookers (they have a hooker tag?) with a 4 into 2 into 1 collector. I just put togather a set of Hedman's with a merg collector...so we'll see.

question to Bob Lasko - what is your enigine ci/ rated horsepower and what was the difference in hp and tq that you saw after the change.

and thanks to all others that have been answering my question

Re: Merg collectors

i just ordered a set from performance welding, i'll report when i get them. Mark asked me every detail of the cam card, horse power info, mph info and then told he had to put the collector together based on the info. it is nice to know that as i am running an ihra crate motor class (not very common), and he has to put something together for the combo and not just go to the shelf and pick one that is close.

Re: Merg collectors - the answer

First of, i'd just like to say i got a set of mark's performance welding stainless merg collectors recently and the workmanship was excellent. Also he was the only one out of three places i contacted that required my full cam specs - et and mph to put a set together for me, the other two said " they had something in stock that would work". Thank you for that Mark.

Secondly i have to add that i purchased a set of Schoenfeld stepped headers right out of their catologe and during testing (dyno) on a IHRA D/CM fast burn motor these headers out performed two different custom made headers by 17 and 11 horsepower. I order a second set of the same headers without the collectors and added the pref. welding merg's. We dyno'd my engine (ihra crate 350ci/340hp) yesterday and after tuning with the schoenfeld headers/ collector combo it made 455hp with over 400 ft/lbs carried from 3973rpm to 5554rpm. We changed to the schoenfeld/ perf. welding collector combo and after tuning added 2 jets sizes to the rear, took one degree off the timing and hit 474 horse carrying over 400 ft/ lbs from 4113rpm to 5944rpm and this was all on sunoco 94 octane pump gas. changing to 104 race fuel made gains to 478 horse and carried the 400 lbs to 6300 rpm without any jet changes. oh ya, it maxed out at 444ft/lbs on 94oct and 455ft/lbs on the good fuel.

so i'll take this time to thank Schoenfeld Headers, Performance Welding and Fiorravanti Custom Engine for all your help, and you guys for answering my questions.

Thanks
Ian

That's awesome Ian, you gotta love it when it works out like that. Mark's collectors do work and here is proof! Good luck this year! Shawn

Ian, all we need now is your social insurance number, pin number for your debit card, and all your credit card numbers with the exiration date and last 3 digets on the back of the card and we will know everything. Hahahaha.Sounds like some pretty impressive numbers. You got 40 more hp than me thats for sure.

theres alway one...oh wait, maybe its the same one over and over again. Simple, i asked quesions and got alot of good advise but no info to back up the replies to my original merg collector question. i did my homework, and am not afraid to fill in the gaps that the others failed to add. Marks collectors were built for the engine and they worked. hopefully they will move my heavy car to some half descent times.

You'll realize what im talking about when you have a "heads up" run. Its good to pay credit and show appriciation but thats over beers and bench racing. Speak softly and carry a big stick. This isn't bracket racing anymore.

Hi,

Have you used the Schoenfeld headers before ?

Im trying to see if any drag racers use them to see how they compare in performance to Hooker Super Comp's etc

Hooker no longer makes 1 7/8" headers for my car, i think i could use 1 7/8" headers on my 327

Im should be running about 8,500rpm past the lights. Using a 278/284 @.050 .726/.660 106 lobe center installed @ 106

I also saw Schoenfeld has 1 3/4" stepped to 1 7/8". Another thing is how well do they fit the chasis that Schoenfeld say they are made for ?

Thanks in advance
