Ice Storm of 2009
So how is everyone doing thru the ice storm? We have been without power since Tuesday about noon. It took Larry all that afternoon to get our generator on our service truck hooked up to the house. So we have heat, water and everything we need. We just don't run a lot of things at once. It is burning about 40 gallons of diesel fuel per day. We have enough diesel for another few days. There are 595,000 people in KY without power. There are 21,000 people in our county without power and there are 21,000 people in our county. No one has power. The service stations have gas but no power to pump it.
Last night we had 15 people here. Today Chris's wife took their girls and went to her parents in Nashville, where they are staying until the power is back on. They are saying that it may be 3 weeks before we have power back. My mom and 2 of my sisters and their families are staying here, so they went back to their houses and cleaned out refrigerators and freezers and brought everything back here. Hopefully everybody is doing ok. We will post more later. Patsy & Larry |
Re: Ice Storm of 2009
Patsy, pretty rough around here, too. About 30 miles south in Sikeston, there are lots of trees and power lines down. only about 6 or 8 businesses are open, our dealership being one of them. No internet for 1-2 weeks, 12,000 without power for up to 2 weeks, no running water, etc. The trees look like giant, ice covered mushrooms.
I live in Cape, just north of the worst ice storm i've ever seen..... Wade |
Re: Ice Storm of 2009
louisville is under state of emergency, 195,000 out of power (including me and my business)... most still can get fuel, but kerosene is running out. more trees / limbs down than september hurricane hit.
lge forecasting 7-11 days without power for some... more snow sunday night jack mccarthy cANT WAIT FOR CAJUNS !!! |
Re: Ice Storm of 2009
Well,
We were without power for a total of 6 hrs. A big thanks to Harrison Co. REMC and especially one board member by the name of David Walther. Still no cell service and HS internet is touch and go. Fore cast is for another 5-6 inches of Snow first part fo the week. I haven't been to work since Tuesday. Wife works for school system so she's off until at least Monday, maybe longer. I'm starting to get cabin fever. |
Re: Ice Storm of 2009
Here near Mt Vernon IL we just got the snow and very little ice. Our state and county roads are good but township roads are terrible. We got the Ice last year and I know what you guys are up against hopefully you all will get power back sooner than expected.

Not bad in Sanford Fl. Hammer |
Re: Ice Storm of 2009
We are so lucky that Al Gore and his globall warming is helping us out of a real problem. Just think how bad it could be if he wasn't lying to the world so he could get rich.

Re: Ice Storm of 2009
Larry, Patsy, and all others, I feel for you guys. We had the same problems down here after Ike. We were without power for 2 weeks. I ran out of gas after 3 days. Same deal, no power at the stations. I had to get resourceful. If you know any trucking people or construction people, they could have above ground tanks. Even if they have electric pumps, you can syphon the fuel.

Re: Ice Storm of 2009
Hey Patsy,
I bet you wish you had that motor home full of fuel. I learned that a long time ago. Always keep fuel tank full and put storage stablizer in it. Didn't Provoast teach you anything ? Come on down the weather is fine. We will put all of you up. JoAnn |
Re: Ice Storm of 2009
We haven't lost power , but I am running out of places to put the snow.

Re: Ice Storm of 2009

We lost it for about 40 minutes and it came back on, people across the road from my house havent had it for 3 days.. This storm is worse than the one a few years ago because it is staying cold.. We have about 7" of snow in cynthiana.. mixed with layers of ice.. Thankfull to have electric.. Hope you guys get it soon..

Re: Ice Storm of 2009
Here is a picture of our driveway. We are doing pretty well so far. We still have enough diesel for a few more days. We called and ordered more, but our supplier has been taken over by the emergency management services. We do still have our motorhome full of diesel and propane, but it is hard to fit 15 people in it.

Re: Ice Storm of 2009
Larry,Patsy,
Good luck. Sounds rough in many areas right now. We have 8-10 inchs of snow and 2 or 3 ice under it in Dayton area. So far we have power. We lost all power with the winds in September, Nov? Wanting to be prepared we contracted for a Natural Gas 17KW home emergency generator to be installed at the house. We specifically told the contractor we were starting early so he could have it done before the bad weather hit. Well???? The trenchs they dug getting ready to put in the lines are full of snow and the Generator is still in his shop. We are lucky so we cannot complain ...I hope he is ready to bring generators to run the house if we have your conditions here.... See you in the Spring....Racers will do what it takes to survive...Dick Butler |
Re: Ice Storm of 2009
I hope everyone suffering from this storm gets their power soon, but I heard about the mid-February prognosis for some on the news last night. Parts of New England were hit pretty badly by an ice storm in December. Maybe there is something to what people are saying about the need to improve the power grid infrastructure.
BTW, would whoever stole the January thaw please return it? I know it's too late for january, but at this point I'll take it even if it is a bit late. |
Re: Ice Storm of 2009
I have forgotten how to post pictures. I have it on Photo-bucket. What do I do now?
Thanks, Patsy |
Re: Ice Storm of 2009
We lost our power for 43 hours but got lucky. The ice buildup is the most I can ever recall.
I can't park in my driveway due to the neighbors tree. The Bardstown, Nelson County area got hit pretty hard. Not as bad as Elizabethtown, KY tho. http://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s...y/DSCF1068.jpg |

Re: Ice Storm of 2009
I showed my wife the picture Bud Lefevre posted of his home
covered in snow. She said I could add Ohio to the list of places not to consider retiring to. :( What is going on with the weather in the USA? You guys have snow and ice and we have sunshine and high 70 degree temps in January?? But don't think about moving out west, we have NO jobs, there are over 44,000 people just here in Orange County, CA without jobs....even Disneyland is laying off people. |

I finally got the picture posted. They are now saying we may be without power for a month.
Wish us luck! Patsy |
Re: Ice Storm of 2009
I heard on the local news they are sending workers from other states to the hard hit areas to help out.
This seams to be an unusually hard winter. At least we have power , good luck. Bud |
Re: Ice Storm of 2009
Larry & Patsy -- Thats' some storm you've got going on there -- we thought its bad here in the East but its nothing compared to yours .Hope you have a long range plan as a month without power seems like an eternity. Here's some good news -- go out and get yourselves a fresh copy of Hemmings Muscle Machines--the cover says it all -- "Perfect in Pink" -- I'm sure this article will pick-up your day .Good Luck...............

Re: Ice Storm of 2009
I live in southwest Missouri, we've had ice storms the last two years, '07-'08, we dodged a bullet this year. I think it had to do with "change" that Obama was talking about ;) Spreading the misery...LOL

Re: Ice Storm of 2009
Well, it is suppose to be in the 50's today. Larry is out with the chainsaw cutting firewood. Now if we just heated with wood!! Jerry Newsome does heat with wood, so maybe he will get it. Things are looking a little bit more optimistic now. They are saying we may have power by the end of the week. We are using about $100 per day (40 gal) of diesel fuel to operate our generator, so I will sure be glad when this is all over. At least my 80 year old mother is staying warm here with us. We have had 10-15 people here since Tues. We went out yesterday and saw a lot of the destruction. Trees and electric poles down everywhere. One of the utility Co.'s lost 1500 poles. Someone said a load of poles came in yesterday with a police escort. Other utility companys from outside the state have been coming in to help. I am still looking for Brian Schultz!!
Well I guess I better get back at it. More later. Patsy |
Re: Ice Storm of 2009
Finally got power back (Sunday at 11:45 AM), got phone service back about 2:30 PM, going to miss football game, still no TV service. Looks like a war zone around here with all the ice damage. Lucky no damage to house or garage from the falling tree limbs. Thank goodness for trailer generator, had to go to E-town to get gas the first day, they finally got power on in town but then were running out of gas at the stations. There are still a lot of people without power so I'm lucky to get power back. I saw crews here from Tenn. and Ga. helping the local crews restore power. J. Gower stock 3058

Re: Ice Storm of 2009
Thank God. We just got power back on yesterday at around 5:00 pm. You don't realize how much electricity affects your life till you don't have any.

Re: Ice Storm of 2009
Greg, good to hear you finally got power back. Got all the tree limbs cut up yesterday, got up this morning to a inch of snow and it is still snowing. Changed oil in both generators, hope I don't have to use them again until race time. Got half the tree limbs to edge of road, guess the the rest will have to wait till after the snow. Winternational this weekend so will have something to keep up with on internet, doesn't look like TV service is going to be back up anytime soon. Well so much for update Tues. Feb 3 get off here and do a little snow removal. J.Gower stock 3058

Re: Ice Storm of 2009
Greg and Jimmy,
Glad to hear you are both ok. It has been 8 days now since we lost power. Mayfield and Paducah are both back with most businesses. We are so far out in the country, it still may be a while. We don't have the generator hooked up to the shop, just the house, so work has stopped except for what we do over the internet. Our phone service has stayed on along with our DSL, so internet is good. Larry has been cutting up limbs for a week and it still looks like a disaster area in our yard. He got the last one down that was on the porch roof without damaging anything, so we have been pretty lucky. We are down to only 6 people here now, I think. I guess I will know more tonight after everyone gets home from work. Most schools look like they will be out at least the rest of the week. Everyone just hang in there. That's what we are trying to do! Patsy |
Re: Ice Storm of 2009
Does the National Weather Service name ice storms like they do tropical storms? I sure some Drag Racer could come up with something appropriate for this one. For "B", how about Blew up a Bullett, or C Crossed the Center Line. I guess I been through too many storms.

Re: Ice Storm of 2009
Hey guys. WOW what a mess! Here in Muhlenberg County, the entire county was 100% without power for almost 6 days! Finally got the main two towns power on Monday morning so things are starting to get better but we are still 70% without power here.
Did not know how blessed we all were til the nessesaties are gone! Of course the good ole' Liquor Stop was open every day...see IRS, I knew that 8K generator would come in handy at the store! On Tuesday and Wednesday of last week the only place that was open at all was the Liquor Stop...wish I had a hardware store, I would have been trying to help people out there also. Kinda wierd when a car load of people come up and all they wanted was food for their kids! I had slim jims, peanuts and chips and they were glad to get them, no one else was open at all! Anyway we are way better now...Thank you to the line men from all over who helped! Power out at home is still much better now that you can at least buy food and get gas...not exactely in that order, lol. Glad everyone else is making it too can't wait to see everyone at the track. Re: Ice Storm of 2009
well power returned at 7pm monday night to home and bowling center (business)...
6 days dark cost us over $15,000 now the joy of fighting with the insurance company... anyway its warm and its worse out in the state, best of luck to our division 3 friends who are STILL without power and heat jack mccarthy |
Re: Ice Storm of 2009
Has the Federal Govt. helped out in any way with disaster relief of any kind ? Or is our Govt. to busy giving away our country in foriegn aid and bailing out banks ? I havent heard much of anything about the storm except how bad it is in Kentucky on the news channels around Md. and D.C. There has been no mention of any kind of help exceot for some National Guard going from door to door checking on people.
|
Re: Ice Storm of 2009
FEMA has been in to help the local govts. They have been giving out ice, water, and kerosene at the local airport. Mostly the local government has been the ones to help. There have been warming stations set up in all counties. I guess fema comes in and reimburses the local and state people. All this area has been designated a natural disaster, so that gets more federal help. We have been lucky that we have been able to manage on our own, but lots of people haven't. The National Guard has been going door-to-door checking on people. We still don't have power, but Chris does. It is supposed to be 10 degrees tonight, so I sure am glad our generator is still working.
