Chrysler Lean Burn System
I acquired a 76 Cordoba , 318 /4bbl today . It doesn't even have the "rich corinthian leather" , so I thought I might try racing it in Street bracket.
What does the lean burn system do? Can I disable it..easily? Will it make it inconsistent? Probably,huh? Thanks in advance |

I think the kit to replace it was the orange ignition box, two wire something like that, since sold my Street Lil Red. In fact, I think the distributor kit came with the box, and wires. Keep your original ignition piece in your glove box in the event you are stuck on the side of the road. The mopar performance books do address the dreaded lean burn, you could also look it up on the magazines. If you don't find it within a couple of days, PM me and I will dig through my books etc here. It appears the 76 (first year) might still have centrifical advance and no exhaust gas monitoring. I see how to de-activate the system with a different distributor and a std type ECU. I suppose I could just try it as is, but I think we both know what will probably happen. |

Hi Mark: Knew a couple of guys who raced those things when new. As a pure stocker type you could not take the air cleaner off or even remove the air cleaner element , it will screw up the mixture and shoot ducks if you do. I setup one car to race and i think had to buy the box that was mentioned, but it has been so long i can not recall what else. Does that one have the quadrajet?

A Mopar mechanic friend told me they backfired so hard while cranking they would brake starter housings!

Disable it and you have a useable 360. I remember working on those LB systems at a Tune-Up Masters I worked at. Just junk, just like all mid-'70's vehicles. That is when the feds were cracking down on emmissions for the first time and the engineers didn't have a grasp on how to clean up the engines effectively.

Mopar Performance pn# p3690426 is a complete ignition kit with the oragne box( or summitt sells a "race"kit that replaces the orange box with a chrome box that will take more rpm) that will fix that problem

I don't like the newer MP distributor kits,they use what looks like a Mallory dist.Nothing against Mallory,but I like being able to get stuff from a local auto parts store if need be.What I'd do is get rid of the lean burn,and wire in the Mopar system using either a ignition harness from MP(or cut one from a junker) use a reman distributor and a auto parts ignition box.You can always put in the advance springs that MP sells and virtually have the same deal they sold years ago.
The instructions for the lean burn conversion are in the old MP "bibles",But if you need the info I can send it to you.It might be avalable at www.moparaction.com in the tech section too. |

The Lean Burn had two pick-up coils. One was for starting and the other was the run mode. There was no advance in the distributator, it was controlled by the electronic module that is on the air cleaner.
Get rid of it like the others say. Buy the complete kit. The carb will have to be richened up or replaced. Good luck! |
