Re: Lee Shepherd
Bobby,
I was just a punk freshmen in high school when this came out. I saw a note in National Dragster the other day about this and asked Phil Burgess if he had a copy, which he forwarded to me. I never saw Shepherd wind through a five speed in the Vette but later on when he was driving the Shioleno & Colemen (sp) G/MP Camaro. Seems like I always missed RMS when they would come to Eastex Dragway for those monthly Modified meets. Sorry Longbob but I had to reduce it in size just to post it. If anyone wants a copy through e-mail, send me your e-mail address. You can read it much better there. |
Re: Lee Shepherd
Todd, send me a copy via email also. What grade were you in??? I was in the same grade.lol

Re: Lee Shepherd
I'll throw this out there for all you old m/p fans, who ran that car after RM.

Re: Lee Shepherd
Hey Todd, I hate to give up my age but I went to several of the old Eastex modified meets and saw Lee as well as Pete Smith, Raymond Martin, Sam Cunningham, Crawford Benham, Earl from the Wop Shop, David Nickens, Dennis Faerman, Eddie Conrad and many many more. You did indeed miss the good old days. Wayne

Re: Lee Shepherd
Wayne,
Long time, no hear. I recognized all those names except Sam Cunningham. What did he drive? Of course you have to add to this list Jeff Linenger, Bear Barilleaux, Lindley Isonhood, George Owens, Weldon Bailey, Ronnie Young and who could forget Willis Ragsdales' B/SR everytime that he yanked a gear. Hey, late congrats on class win at No Problem!! |
Re: Lee Shepherd
Hate to hi-jack this thread, but Todd do you remember Robert "Speedy" Hudson? Big guy, raced around the area with the yellow and black Nova. I heard he passed away yesterday. It's on www.bracketrash.com and www.housonarearacing.com.

Re: Lee Shepherd
Bobby,
Yea, I remember him. A yellow '66 Nova called the "Liberator" that had the rear fenderwells cut out for the tires.. He was a big boy who footbraked this car and usually was ALWAYS in the money. I beat him one night but they called for a re-run and he returned the favor. RIP Speedy. |
Re: Lee Shepherd
Sam Cunningham was a guy from the Port Arthur area and race a 61 or 62 vette that had a straight axle that actually moved back when he launched. It was wild and legal in those days, but plenty fast. He was known for coming up with different ideas. Wayne RIP Speedy, the nova was built by Joey Richards a long time racer from the old Houston track in League City.

Re: Lee Shepherd
I remember all those guys. Lee was a real gentlman, and his cylinder heads were without compare. On my C/SM car, I had heads from three other well known cylinder head shops I won't name, and a set from Lee. The others all flowed the same, and all ran ran the same, except Lee's. Much better flow bench numbers, and over a tenth and close to two MPH faster. In my book, the guy was a genius. Didn't brag, just a quite, very nice man. David Reher and Buddy Morrison also, always very helpful with straight answers and no B.S. Loosing Lee and Buddy was really a loss to the racing comunity.

Some great old stuff there. I remember pushing cars back and forth in the water box, why we did that? I can't tell anyone, guess because we saw everyone else do it? And the dry hops. I think I did more damage to my old Mustang back in the 70's due to those. Usually after doing a burnout, you would do two or three hard dry hops prior to staging. Broke more axles doing that than I care to remember. Robert Swartz |
