New Camaros are in the showrooms
I went out to breakfast with my regular bunch of buddies this AM,, and one of them shows up with a smerk on his face and some papers. When we asked him"What do you got there Johnnie?" he shows us the window sticker off the first new Camaro in town here and said it arrived on Thursday and he and the wife took it for a ride and decided to buy it. Its a V6-6speed manual, all black, LS model with few options, but it looks good (we all opened up the dealership at 8:00AM to see it). They told him he can't take it home yet because they can't "debut" these cars until May 4th, so it has to stay in the showroom. We told him thats a bunch of crap, but he said that was the agreement,,,Strange huh?
So we checked another dealership across town and they are just now unvailing their red RS also a V6 but an automatic. It hadn't sold yet but they too said something about the May4th date, but people can come in and see them until that date. They also said no V8 cars are out there yet,,,has anyone else heard about this? A friend of mine asked the salesman about ordering a SS model and was told it probably wouldn't be here until August!! I'm not sure what the holdup is,,, but I'm sure someone here knows why. One thing,,,if you're over 6 feet tall like I am don't get the sunroof,,your ceiling clearance is Zero. The one without the sunroof is okay. They sure look good in person. I can't wait to see one in Stock or Superstock trim. My 2 cents,,,,,,,,,,,Danny Durham |
Re: New Camaros are in the showrooms
Had one show up at my work on April 17. Local business owner that knew our staff would like to look at it closely. I didn't think they would be out that early. Neat car!

Re: New Camaros are in the showrooms
Wow - that's one ugly car. Too bad Chevy didn't take a page from Ford's playbook and style this version with lines that evoke images of the original Camaro. This car looks like some knock off of Cadillac's attempt to have a sports car.
The original Camaro is what set the table for a great production run that is still being driven and raced today. Ford figured that out not only in their styling but in the performance department too. Way to go GM - little wonder you're bankrupt! |

Re: New Camaros are in the showrooms
I agree with Carl. That's one ugly car.:( I'm personally disappointed. I've been a hard core Chevrolet/GM person most of my life but in the last three years I've purchased Ford products for my daily drivers even though my tow vehicle is still a Chevrolet and all three of my drag cars are Chevrolet products. Chevrolet should have taken a page out of the Ford and even the Chrysler book and created a Camaro that looks much more like an original 1969 Camaro. The way GM vehicles are today you would think that there must be some sort of communist plot going on to over throw the American auto industry! This is only my personal opinion. :)

"The Stock Wars" are back!!!!!!! |
Re: New Camaros are in the showrooms
I agree, that is one ugly piece. My wife likes them, but she likes Hummers too. Also married me, evidently she has no tastes at all.

Re: New Camaros are in the showrooms
i dont get all the hate, the mustang looks like a mustang and the dodge and the camaro look like they have the same mother.
|
Re: New Camaros are in the showrooms
Where is all this ugly stuff coming from ........not a bad looking ride at all . And with Pontiac calling it quits this morning I might have to rejoin the Bowtie brigade .

Re: New Camaros are in the showrooms
I'm a Ford guy so I am unabashedly biased, but it is one ugly critter. Doesn't matter though, I'll bet the staging lanes will be full of them within a year. Meanwhile there might be two or three '05 and later Mustangs running, not counting the new CJs.
Just as a reminder of what ugly is, lets take a vote on the winner of this competition, my apologies to the Mopar die-hards. http://www.employees.org/~bhracing/2010_Camaro.jpghttp://www.employees.org/~bhracing/1962_dart.jpg |
Re: New Camaros are in the showrooms
Bill -- Lets be fair to the Mopar guys -- that 62 Dart is a four door model .......

Re: New Camaros are in the showrooms

Re: New Camaros are in the showrooms
Ugly!? You want ugly, try a '59 Imperial
2. '61 Plymouth 3. various DeSota's & other Mopars of the late '50's & early '60's 4. '59 Ford 5. '58 & '59 Chevy 6. '10 Camaro 7. AMC Pacer 8. Volkswagen Thing 9. Malibu Laguna 10. Aztec I'm not a Ford guy, but those new Mustang's hit the mark; there everywhere in my town, sit right and look fast, the Challenger looks fat in front and rear and sits too high; I'll be surprised if the new Camaro is a hit, and I'm a big Camaro fan |

Re: New Camaros are in the showrooms
I have to agree with the majority, I think GM missed the boat here. Someone said it looks like the Cadillac sports car and I have to agree, I can see the XLR in its pedigree and wouldn't be suprised if most of the the car's running gear is the same. The Challanger and Mustang are closer to their ancestors than this beast. I am a Ford guy and I think the Challenger is the best looking out of the three in street form then the Mustang.
|
Re: New Camaros are in the showrooms
The Aztec should be in a seperate class, unfair advantage like a blower Mustang. A 62 Dodge done right is badas*, as will the Camaro as a race car
|
Re: New Camaros are in the showrooms
That picture of the Camaro riced up does not do it justice. How many of the people saying the car is ugly have seen one in person? It's a fantastic looking car and has a very aggressive look. The HID headlights make the car look really good. Sure it's not 100% retro but it's retro enough. If you want a 69 Camaro then go buy a 69 Camaro.

Re: New Camaros are in the showrooms
Wonder how it will be in Super Stock,or a SS/Modified.Went to my local Chevy dealer today and saw a new Camaro,On the door sticker the shipping weight was 3700 lbs??????

Re: New Camaros are in the showrooms
Alan,,,I don't know if they could ever get them down to around 3100 lbs with all the modern comforts and computer systems that are present in current cars, not to mention the independent rear suspension which could be heavier (and less affordable) than a solid rear axle.
Clay,,I agree,,if you want a 69 Camaro, go get one. By the way that little guy in the box just about made me fall out of my chair,,,,,,,too funny! Danny Durham |

With all due respect to your list, leave the '58 Chevy out of it...don't you remember how cool the one that "Ron Howards" character drove in the hit movie "American Graffiti" looked? Just because it was too big to be a good stocker, doesn't mean it wasn't a cool car...and there wasn't much better at the Drive-In's either I bet....you should've put the Nissan Pulsar from the mid-late '80's in there instead, or the '60's Peugeot's... I will agree though that Chevy should've made the Camaro look more like the '69 instead of this wacky rendition??? |
Re: New Camaros are in the showrooms
The new camaro is UGLY because it DOESNT look like a camaro.
|
Re: New Camaros are in the showrooms
The new Camaro's are heavy but all the new cars with latest technology and safety requirements are very heavy. I'm sure a drag version of the car could be made lighter but just compare the weights of the three out there. I'll go with the top of the line versions.
Mustang GT500 3,920lb Camaro SS 3,860lb Challenger SRT8 4,140lb So none of them by any means are lightweights! They got the Challenger and Mustangs lighter so I'm sure you could get the Camaro alot lighter as well. Danny, Yea I thought that guy was hilarious as well. I don't remember where I found him though. So you can steal him and use it to! |

Re: New Camaros are in the showrooms
Based on what seems the inevitable… that GM and Chrysler will be owned by the government and labor unions…while legitimate free market bond issuers will get screwed… I’ll never, ever, buy another GM or Chrysler vehicle again.
I always bought US vehicles, even when I knew they were junk. But no more. As well, I always supported any CEO’s earnings: The silly minions that whined about their high salaries were, and still are, lowbrows and ignorant. But when Rick Wagoner, without a peep, crawled away like a wuss when government sphincters told him to go, THAT was a moment to puke: You earn all that money and you end up being a wussy and sissy. I’ll buy freak’n anything but a GM or Chrysler now: GM and Chrysler can go to Hell. |
Re: New Camaros are in the showrooms
I noticed that at SEMA seeing them in person, the color of them completly transforms the car. Dark colors are better, light makes them look too big to me.
|
Re: New Camaros are in the showrooms
They had one at the new car show a couple weeks ago. Front end is still ugly even though it looks like they have done a few minor changes since the 07 and 08 shows the prototypes were at.
I sat in it, my head was against the roof. It was a sunroof model. No way i'd get a helmet on in there. The guages look hard to read while driving but that seems to be a GM trait for a while now. It was a V8 but the salesman said they are only selling V6's for the first few months. |
Re: New Camaros are in the showrooms
Saw one last Friday night at the track. Kid driving it with 20" looking rims/tires and it went 8.45 in the 1/8th. Not a bad looking car in person and I'm a Ford guy. But others here are right it looks like it is from the same mold as the Dodge
|
Re: New Camaros are in the showrooms
The 2009 Mazda RX-8 is only marginally smaller than what a Camaro should be (overall length 175") and has a curb weight of 3,060 pounds.
I realize a Wankel is a lot lighter than a big V8, but that's a huge difference in weight. I don't think than ANY of the "big 3" (that's a joke, now) worked very hard to keep weight off their new ponycars. Too bad; if they had, they'd be REALLY fast, with those engines! |

Re: New Camaros are in the showrooms
The new V6 they are putting in the Camaro is a direct-injection motor that's also in the Cadillac. It makes over 300 horsepower. It could run 8.45 in the eighth, I think, with the right tires.

Length 158.1 in Width 66.7 in Height 57.9 in Camaro Length 190.4 in ( 2' 8" longer) Width 75.5 in (8" wider) Height 54.2 in (4" shorter) Also the Kia has a 1.6L 98 hp engine to the Camaro's 6.2L 426hp engine. Someone mentioned the RX-8 and yes it is lighter as well. RX-8 is a slightly smaller car but it also has aluminum body panels. It has a carbon fiber driveshaft as well. Take that rotary out and put a LS in there and you got a nice piece although the FD body is better for that. That being said I do think they could have done a much better job with weight reduction. The Corvette is a good example. It is a very light car but with this lighter weight also comes a bigger price. |
Re: New Camaros are in the showrooms
I saw one on the way home tonight; red with RS badges - dual exhaust. No way to tell what was under the hood.
