Jeg's All Star coverage!

Just watched the Lucas Oil coverage of the Jeg's All Star race. Seems good to see the All Stars get some TV time.Congrats to all the winners.
A BIG thanks to JEG"S for all they do for the sportsman racers.

Of all the times I've watched the Lucas Oil Sportsman coverage, I think that's the most entertaining show I've seen! They actually showed the real sportsman racers and not just the alcohol cars.

It was on ESPN2 right after NHRA TODAY.
I wish I had been aware what it was before it came on as I would have taped it!
I loved the slo mo of Greg Luneak looking over near the finishline !
I doubt it'll be on again...........:-(

The slo mo of Gregg was a classic.

I really liked the sportsman coverage ( about time) would love to see more. On a differant subject NHRA needs to address all the brake jamming at the finish line this show highlights the dangerous games these guys are playing at the stripe

It was a great show for once. In car cameras to. One question they showed the Benham v Fletcher race in Comp. It clearly showed Scott at the stripe first, but Dan getting the win. ED

I saw and was perplexed by that too. Makes me wonder if Dan got the win due to the front nose of his car beating out the front tire of Scotts car? I heard of a race won last year by someone who's nose dipped low enough to trip the lights just ahead of the opponents front tire, but since the other racers car wasn't blessed with ground effects skirting, his bumper wouldn't dip low enough to do the same thing no matter how hard the brakes were applied...very interesting....

In all of my years of wishing that ESPN would give us non-alcoholic/injected racers some real exposure on television, THIS WAS THE BEST SPORTSMAN COVERAGE EVER!!!! I regret that I missed taping the first 10 minutes of it, but the last 20 of the JEGS ALL-STARS coverage was so awesome, that I'll be enjoying the rewinding of those moments again and again!!!

As for Greg Luneack, I thought it was great seeing him looking as though he was glaring at the tv camera, while he was reading his opponents progression towards him/the finish line....I can hear Allen Reinhart (I hope I spelled his name right) saying--- "HEY GREG SMILE AT THE CAMERA"! LOL.... Furthermore, I thought it was humorous that in spite of the correct spelling of Greg's last name on the check, those wonderful tv people still misspelled his last name (Luneak instead of Luneack), when showing him in the winners circle...what's the deal with that ESPN???

It was also nice to see Div's 5 & 7 nearly pull off the upset of a series that's been dominated by the first four divisions for years...that made me feel so good knowing how close they both came (200 points ea.), that I'm more motivated than ever to do what I can to not only get back to racing, but become one of (if not) the first fwd racers to qualify for/participate in an all stars race...now that would be something else WOW WORTHY!!!

This was TV coverage we've dreamed about and begged for forever ! I wonder if maybe Jeg's or NHRA could get them to play it again ?? Or we could contact ESPN in a write in campaign in and convince them to replay it at least once ?

Re: Jeg's All Star coverage!

I have raced against a few bracket cars that have a purpose built deflector ( for lack of a better term) on the front below the fairing/ground-effects/etc that will trip the beams ahead of you. It is no big deal as long as you see it on the car and know it is there. You think you have a wheel on them, but they are tripping the beam first.

I thought the show was great and I have watched it about 3 times now.Amazing how slow a S/Street car looks on T.V. I really enjoyed listening to Jeggie trying to explain to the T.V audience how the cars got loose at the finish line without ever even mentioning a brake pedal! Jeggies the man! It was great to see how excited he was about the race.

Why not a bunch of us email ESPN and ask them to run the program again and maybe with enough of us asking for it who knows they might run it again. I only hope they would inform us as to when if they choose to run it again. I have already emailed them with my request. So come people lets let them know .

Great ideal Ron, and/or call their complaint line and actually shock them by complimenting them for the broadcast, with the hopes that this won't be just a one time per year thing---we can begin by selling the fact that the best and baddest wheelstanders are from the Stock/Super Stock ranks, plus some of the most challenging racing as well!!!

I called the "ESPN" complaint/comment line and told them about our website, and the feed back thus far in regards to their coverage of the "Jegs All Stars" race, and not only did the rep. appreciate all of the kind words, but she also wrote down the name of our website (and how to find this thread), and said that she'd forward it on to the people who need to know of these thoughts and feedback! So keep your eyes/ears open fellow racers, and keep on commenting on this because the greater the feedback we tender, the greater our chances of increasing our tv exposure???

BTW, the number I called is (860) 766-2236.

Another reason I thought that was interesting, was after seeing the margin of victory between Greg Luneacks wagon, and Slate Cummings '08 Cavalier (plus knowing that Greg's margin of victory was .0062), I thought it was odd that the front tire of Greg's car just edged out the front tip of Slate's Cavalier, and that the lowest edge of Slate's front end was low enough to be able to trip the finish light beem---thus making me feel like his tire may start his race, but his frontal facia (especially if under braking), could dip low enough to trip the lights at the end)...did any body else notice that??? Clearly Gregs whole tire crossed the line ahead of Slate's Cavalier, but given the obviously ultra fast revolutions of the thousandts of a second, I think more than .006 would've elapsed between Greg's tire crossing the finish line than when Slate's tire did??? Any physics/math majors here who can agree/disagree with my thoughts, because that's verrrry interesting!!???

Not really Bill, because the standard contact line that they supposedly have has never worked for me, so I'm glad that I got that number...maybe it's the public computers that I use that was the reason I couldn't directly email them, but otherwise I'm clueless...good luck trying that bud...

That would be OK since they are staging with the same device correct? In the example above they are sayng a car which stages with the tire broke the win beam with body work. Not good.

Is that why they moved the spectator stands away from the finish line at Joliet? So you can't see who actually won? :-)

Re: Jeg's All Star coverage!

I thought the finish line photoeyes were higher than the staging photoeyes. And that's why some of the firebirds and camaro could dip the nose down at the finish line to break the beam. At least that what I was told.

Yes, they are higher (or at least they were when I talked to someone about it 20+ years ago). The explanation I was given was that they needed to be higher to be sure the timing system did not miss the tire passing through on the top end. If they were low like the staging beams, then the period of time breaking the beam would be very short at the top end while the car is at a higher speed. With modern electronics I don't think that reason is valid any more. I've been thinking of posting this as a thread here to see if people think that the finish line beams should be lowered. I learned all about this after losing a race in Super-Gas to one of the then-new Brogie roadsters with a minimum-height front "bumper", which was obviously designed to trip the lights.

Kudos to ESPN for the good coverage, wish I would have been able to catch it (I was traveling and do not have a DVR).

Regards,

Bobby, I was the one who made that comment, and last night I re-watched the staging of both cars, and it looked to me as though the Cavaliers front end moved forward of the staging beams to thus stage with the tire, however the freeze frame at the end showed the Cavaliers tire clearly being behind the rear-most edge of the wagons front tire as it tripped the finish line beams. However, the front nose of the Cavalier was right there close enough to the front edge of the wagons tire to explane the narrow victory for Greg...I hope somebody else who saw/taped this race will look at it so as to agree/disagree with my oppinion, but as I said before verrry interesting....

Re: Jeg's All Star coverage!

some of the guys that i bracket race with use a "stripe taker" mounted up by the front bumper and it only hits the beam at the top end. they stage with the tire and take the stripe with the wing. cheatin bastards!

The coverage was good, except for one thing I noticed that was not mentioned on here! The top end cameras were at the 1000' mark!!! Showing once again how everything is geared towards the pros! Only the finish line cameras (still) were shown at the stripe, everything else on top end was from the 1000' to the down track cameras! It was not like that last year.

You're right Bryan, and I didn't like that either...ESPN IF YOU'RE READING THIS THREAD, I HOPE YOU'LL FIX THAT ISSUE, SO WE GET FULL TRACK COVERAGE IN THE FUTURE TOO...AFTER ALL, WE SPORTSMAN RACERS ARE THE PRIMARY BILL PAYERS OF THE NHRA!!!!
