Who's Getting Hit With H.P.?

Its almost that time of year, the mid-year horse power adjustment. It looks like the LS-1 is due, the 396 Aluminum head, and my favorite "Paper Car", Mr Bill's Shelby.
I'm sure there might be others combos that could be up for review.

They could give that red thing from Louisiana about 50 hp and it would suit me. :D

I'd be willing to bet the "red thing" is due for some HP as well.

I also think the L-88 Vette might be up for review in SS. Seems like they've all gone fast this year but I don't know what the avg is.

Re: Who's Getting Hit With H.P.?

My understanding is that Jerry Silveus is running the 275/287 Hp Lt-1 in his GT car, Jerry was 117.3 Gainesville, 129.3 Atlanta, 135.0 Belle Rose, and 120.3 at Madison. Unless he is changing engine combos some combination is going to get looked at. Irvin John was 127.4 under at Gainesville, I do not know what that combo was.

Jerry is running a L-98, from what I understand.

Larry, there were a lot of 1.15 or more runs under index, 2nd & 3rd rounds in stock at Englishtown last night. Tom

Jack, this is the only Christmas list that "Danny" will let me and other MOPAR racers have!

Bo, I only watch the cars in my class in stock, I love to watch SS but can't afford to play.

larry the shelby was tryng to get hit so that it will move the car from a natural C car to a natural B car that will allow the car to run A .do You know anyone who would not want the car in A.:D

Re: Who's Getting Hit With H.P.?

Bo -- Latino, Russo, Matyas, Pendarvis, McClanahan, and Folk all went quicker than 1.15 under.

Randy -- ink made Hawk's car good. It just needs a little more ink to make it a little more even with the rest of us without any help from Santa Claus. About him or any other car in A/SA thats great, to win I have to beat them all. I always come to race and I leave nothing in the trailer.

Aw Larry, I am sure there are some inexpensive rollers out there. A short deck 440 is so killer.......come on get off some of that cash you have those big hands wrapped around! ;)

I question I have is, how does a combination get their horsepower factor reduced?

Bill Harris 06-16-2009 02:41 PM

Re: Who's Getting Hit With H.P.?

You write a letter to the NHRA asking for a HP reduction on a particular combination. If the committee thinks it has merit, they will drop the factor some, usually about 2.5 to 3%. You can send an e-mail to ahfs@nhra.com.

Write a HP reduction letter to NHRA national tech requesting a reduction.Send time slips showing your car can't go any quicker than about .50 under and maybe (depending on like engine combos times) and
MAYBE they will knock 5-10 off.Obscure combos have a good chance of getting HP back.
When I got 5 and 5 off about 10 years ago Jim Skelly was there. He had a good feel who was legit and was easy to work with.I don't know about now though.

Ed, I have asked many times last year and this year about a reduction on my combo , but I have not heard a word.

It's been my experience that no answer means "no".

If the answer is yes, the change will be listed on the NHRA website and Nat'l Dragster after the mid-year review. Sometimes there's a "no change" list as well that responds to the written requests.

The previous owner of your car, the late Andy Stintson, got some HP off the 2-barrel combo a while back. I also see that the 255 HP 350 in the Kingswood is rated at 275, while the same engine in a Camaro or Nova is 280. Don't know if Andy had anything to do with that.

Re: Who's Getting Hit With H.P.?

They knocked 50 hp off the 1966 327/350 hp motor....
I guess it wasn't enough, but that's over 14-percent.
I seem to remember a 1962 327 Corvette motor (may have been
a fuelie) that got even more off, IIRC, a couple of years ago.

What do you have to do to get THAT kind of HP off a combination?

Hi Tony I talked to them when I got the car and at that time it was 280 HP and it was changed then........thanks

I have sent a letter to them twice a year for three years and the results have been a reply that the HP factor is correct. It does not need to reduced.

Re: Who's Getting Hit With H.P.?

My buddy Mike wrote a letter and got some HP taken off his combo. He's afraid his efforts at Topeka may get him some of it back though.

Re: Who's Getting Hit With H.P.?

A one time hit of under 1.40 at a national meet is not going to get horsepower.

Larry Hill 06-17-2009 08:09 PM

Re: Who's Getting Hit With H.P.?

Tony 1.40 under at anyplace besides Div. 6 will get you a 3.25% adjustment Monday after the race. I know I have gotten 3.25% twice, and every time my radiator did not leak a drop.

What ever happened to being responsible for ones actions.

Tony Janes 06-18-2009 08:25 AM

Re: Who's Getting Hit With H.P.?

I should have said less than 1.40 or between 1.15 and 1.399 under one time is not going to get one horsepower.

Hawk's car is a bullet with Chevy rod pin size and a bunch of other gifts from Santa. It could use just a bit more ink.

I can tell you from personal experience via a friend that this process is broken. My friend submitted a request last summer for his combo and as of today he has not gotten any response. He emailed the former div 2. s/ss committe rep, division director, and the national tech director his request. When he attended the Carolina Nationals he cornered the Glendora guy and asked him about it; the guys says he never saw it, my friend produces a email with the tech directors name along with delivery reciept and he says oh it must have gotten mixed up. He was promised an answer by Finals last year, never got one. He called back at the beginning of the year and he was told it would be reviewed before Mar 09 with some that were left over from 2008 and it didn't happen. So now it's almost that time again, will it show up by 30 June in ND or NHRA online, I'm not holding my breath. I know one thing, if it was me I'd be speaking to the tech directors boss, there know excuse for not getting this done when you follow their rules.

Bill Harris 06-19-2009 11:10 AM

Re: Who's Getting Hit With H.P.?

Well, all I know about the HP letter request process is my own experience. I have made several requests for HP reductions on combos and all have been addressed, sometimes with a reduction and sometimes without. I know of several others who have gone through the process and have also had their requests addressed in the bi-annual reviews.

All of the requests are supposed to be addressed at the twice a year reviews by "the committee". If you send a letter or e-mail in you probably won't get a personal response, at least I never have, but when the reviews are posted, my requests have always been in the list.
