The Fletch
Dan Fletcher, Super Stock (1994)
http://www.nhra.com/UserFiles/image/...s_fletcher.jpg Fletcher is the only Lucas Oil Sportsman driver to sweep the Western Swing. Though Denver was Fletcher’s first event at an altitude track, he adjusted quite well to the 5,860-foot-altitude Bandimere Speedway, wheeling his late father Tom’s ’69 Camaro to the Super Stock title over Larry Yow. Fletcher was again unstoppable in Sonoma, where he used a perfect reaction time in the final to beat second-generation racer Doug Lambeck in the final. Fletcher then etched his name in the history books when he topped Gary Rouse in the Seattle title round for his third straight victory, which was also his fourth of the season. Fletcher got a brief scare in the final when Rouse beat him at the Tree, .018 to .038, but “Fletch” overcame it and won with a 10.80 (10.78 dial) run. |

Re: The Fletch
Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but for me personally; I put Peter Biondo and David Rampy right alongside of Fletch when it comes to best Sportsman driver ever. I don't even try to rank them; it's just those 3 in no particular order. Also don't forget that Jeg Coughlin was, and still is when he competes, a great Sportsman driver. In 1997 he became the only person to win National events in 4 different classes in the same season - Super Stock, Super Gas, Comp., and Pro Stock; very impressive in that each class requires a different driving discipline. You could debate this subject for hours.

Re: The Fletch
he not only drives as good as anyone... he often is solo working on two cars, towing 10 - 15 hours and unloading in time for tech to open...
he even understands most everything bernie cuningham says ! best active sportsman driver, and a pretty nice guy too ! jacks opinion :) |
Re: The Fletch
I will agree, Jack!

Re: The Fletch
You guys are overlooking Scotty Richardson. High six figure returns without the contingency.
Nothing against Fletcher, but when Fletcher starts winning the BIG DOLLAR (tighter packages) bracket races, then he'll be considered. It's S.R. then the rest. |

Re: The Fletch
How many wins does Fletcher have compared to everyone else Biondo, Richardson, Rampy, Bertozzi, etc.? Just curious.
|
Re: The Fletch
just a thought, though i do not think it would happen, how long would it take fletch to be competitive in a pro stocker,if given say the idle car of dave connely ,cag**** power,,,i bet he would be in the winners circle in less than 4 events,,,,just thinking here
|
Re: The Fletch
I agree with Larry about the 4 events or less for Fletcher. Also, S.R. compiled his Wally's roughly over a 5-7 year period (very short period). S.R. cleaned house in NHRA in the late 80's and early 90's. He left the circuit to chase the BIGGER dollars bracket racing. Hard to pass up 50K & 100K races with only 150 entries.

Re: The Fletch
I'd pay $2,000.00 to drive that Checkmate Camaro at a NHRA National Event.

Re: The Fletch
I would consider Dan to be on the list of the Best active "Sportsman racers" .......And when he is retired we will see just how many races, wallys and money he has totally collaborated in his time. Lets not get into the bracket racing thing cause thats where he started not where he finished. Also Dan im sorry about your hero Michael Jackson.

Re: The Fletch
I believe that any of the young men mentioned in this thread (and a few others) qualify as "Great"! Anyone that doesn't think so should give up their job and try supporting their family on the monies they earn racing!

Re: The Fletch
I appreciate everyone's kind words...
I just want to jump in here to thank John Gunn for helping me last weekend at Lebanon. I broke a rocker on the first TT with the Comp car, and, lets just say we aren't the most well funded comp operation out there. Our one spare rocker wouldn't adjust on the cylinder that broke, so I had to start swapping rocker pairs to get things to work. By the time I finally got things lined out, I found the needle bearings were on the way out of another one. Gunn took my broke pair (and my soon to be broke pair) home and made one that would work. I was most likely dead in the water without his help. Thanks John. Got to get off the computer and put my *** in the truck...1600 miles to Denver is calling... |
Re: The Fletch
Safe travels my friend.. someone is waaaaaaaaay overdue for a stock, and/or superstock win. You heard it here first.

Marty~ This is a compliment and should not be taken any other way! |
Re: The Fletch
I'll second what Marty just said....On the topic of "bracket" racers. Ask any of them which is harder. A true "bracket" race, or running s/ss. 99% will say class racing is harder. Reason being, there winning championships at the same track year in year out. There not driving to 15 different tracks, making passes on say Friday and Saturday, then have first round Monday. (thats what happened at The Rock in the fall of last year). Just think about it.........................Dan the man,,,,i know your good...3 IHRA nationals last year i have the losing slips lol....atleast it wasnt 1st or 2nd round lol...Good luck drive safe to denver...(i aint working you need a co-pilot?)

Re: The Fletch
I was gonna post earlier to say that he will be in 3+ finals, with at least 3 wins on the western swing. Damn it, he let me down in SS at Denver but he's got it going on right now and I don't want to be in the other lane once we get to Sonoma!
|
Re: The Fletch
Dan congrats on that huge win in stock. Keep the ball rolling on the rest of Western swing. Once again congrats on that win from all the guys in Rochester N.Y.(Vinnie, Larry, Scott, Steve,Paul,Joe.):)
