Great site; brings back lots of memories, but I think it's more like '50s and '60s for the most part.
Verrrrry interesting!!! |

Well worth looking at thanks.
Running up to the tower to claim those little trophies sure felt fantastic. Different times same passion. |

here's the picture, can you see the trophy on the front fender ?
May 1961 Detroit dragway It was a 270 h.p. 283 with 3 on the tree. Think it was c/s..... |

Tom,
What class was that; B/S, or C/S??? Just curious... |
Re: Take a look at this find 60 & 70's
Awesome pics. Reminds me of the old NHRA track on a abandoned air strip up in Orange, Mass. that I used to race at back in the 60's....Sanford, Maine... Charlestown, Rhode Island....Connecticut Dragway---old New England tracks that are long gone...This sport sure has changed. Thanks for bringing back some great memories...:D WJ

Did you notice all the smiles on all the racers faces. They all had a good time.

Sure I ran Atles Bucron, think I left them on and drove all week on them .[1st drag radials]
I sold the 57 when I bought a 59 Pontiac that was winning races. The guy who bought my 57 put a 4 speed in it and had to run d/g, as tech told him 57 chevys did come with 4 speeds, as I remember it this is a picture from 1962 and the wins in '62 think it ran d/sa never ran NATIONALS, because of cam |

If I could jump as high as the starter I would still be playing basketball.
Thanks for the pictures. |

Re: Take a look at this find 60 & 70's
Can anybody ID the track where most of these shots were taken....with the uphill shut-off area? The layout reminds me of 75-80 in MD but the surrounding geography and what looks like the "Miss Roanoke" trophy queen makes me think VA of course. Could that be Culpepper,VA or a track that has closed? That shot of the chopped #29 B/C car reminds me of Suffolk.....Wow, I've got to get away from this computer.....

Re: Take a look at this find 60 & 70's
Any older Roanoke,VA racers out there? A friend of mine researched that Allan Brown book about race tracks and said there was a 1/4 mile drag strip circa 1960 in or near Roanoke....No mention of years in operation or name.....anybody remember that place? So I guess that's the track in the photos....given the trophy queen that's there.......
