Larry, (just for class elim.),......I'm gonna show up with 2 stages of Nitrous, under both carbs... I'm planning on running some very good fuel..... AND, I can get my car very light..... so ..... I'M GONNA LOSE, ... and I'm not stopping at the scales, ...BUT...., we're gonna see how fast they can go ......LMAO, Jim.

What does that have to do with drinking beer? Bailey, I got an old max manifold we could put the old nitro rag inside. You get some of that stuff from Head.

Should be some new Challengers there to keep it interesting.

How long does it take to pull a head in tear down on 08 Mustang? How many Mustang have showed up to run claas at a National Event this year? 1 at Topeka? Tom

At Indy, they tore down the A stick winner among others. I wold say that the dudes that have the Mustangs can probably afford to bring a "crew". I am not sure if tear down voids the "factory Warranty" though. :)

Of course Brett McFarland was the Champ there!

I'm about 95 percent sure that you cant remove either head or the pan with that engine in a car. Its HUGE, makes a Hemi look small

Superfan1 07-16-2009 08:18 AM

Re: Class Winners Indy 2009

The Classification guide has the '08 Mustang coupe at a factor of 7.62, and the convertible at 7.82 which makes them both "natural" AA cars. They can move down to A, but they definitely can't move down to B.

Re: Class Winners Indy 2009

If pulling a head is in the future, don't look for many of the fords to go fast. I work on similar engines at work and believe me it is time consuming. Showing up torn down for inspection may be an option but I'd think it would be a monumental undertaking to tear down then put back for eliminator. JMO Joe For what it's worth for all those who believe these cars really are that fast I guess they may just show their hand.

Re: Class Winners Indy 2009

I think they are made just like the Ford Superduty trucks. you don't take out the engine to work on it, you just pull the body off the frame.

Larry,

I agree on Mustang in A/SA, but I like the 1969 models.

Thanks for the laugh Larry. Do we have a pool on what car in which class?

Having working on a few Turbo Regals, I'd expect these cars to arrive with cut apart engine compartments to allow access to everything!

So I guess if you have a CHEVY DO NOT GO TO INDY. The fords will win

A cylinder head can be pulled with the engine in the car. Jimmy, Steve and I removed the passenger side head from a "pre-production" Cobra Jet in my shop in preparation for the Winternationals. The "pre-production" car had all of the original factor accessories like power brakes, power steering, electical junction box, etc. Our AA/S Cobra Jet does not have any of those items and is much easier to work on.

It's one thing to tear it down in a full on shop, it's another thing to do it in the tear down at the track but either way it's going to be interesting......and I thought it was hard tearing down a Max Wedge!

Re: Class Winners Indy 2009

( Don't forget about the new Challengers ) ....laughing....This could be NHRA's wake up call to their "Factory Wars".....The new Drag Pac Challenger won't run within a tenth of the new Supercharged Mustang, .....Two tenths if the air is bad. Then maybe they'll take a look at the "REAL" HP..... Heck, I don't think the Challengers can run with Shaul, Barton, or Sorrenson,(even with water in his engine.)

The accessability in that engine compartment doesn't look much worse than the 4th gen LS1 Fbody GM cars. Thanks for the informative pics. WJ :)

apparently they designed the engine bay of the new car (05-up) with these engines in mind. I know doing the same thing in an SN-95 car is torture

Did you ever race it? I changed gears back in 67 to 4.88's added an L-88 cam and headers. DROVE to the track on 8 inch (all that would fit) slicks ran a bunch of 11.0's and one 10.97 at the old Aquasco drag strip in southern Md. The 4 1/2 MPG's was rough even back in the cheap gas days....lol. Ended up putting the 3.55's back in it. Marina Blue rag top, black interior and side pipes. Loved it but man was it ever HOT to drive in the summer.

Re: Class Winners Indy 2009

No. I barely got it broken in. The day I purchased the car was the day I graduated from Artillery Officers Candidate School at Ft. Sill, OK. I went to Vietnam in February 1968. I had made the decision to keep the car. I was shot in April 1968 and then shot again in June 1968. I made the decision then to sell the car at that time....dumb decision.

There is a man in San Diego that has 17 of these in his car collection. He has more than 17 but the 17 he displays are 100 point show cars. He also has many other rare muscle cars.

I like the new mustangs and I think they will win at Indy. Does anyone have a picture of the crank ? Im told it looks very similar to the callies ultra light which is based on the newest oem design. I will say that I think the guys running these cars have them detuned at this stag of the game and wont have to show what they really got for a few years.

Larry, I figure you and a couple of your friends could win with a little threat of bodily injury to the ford guys.

No doubt in my mind who will win B/SA -- That's if Sal Biondo shows up with Billy Hawks' "Black Beauty" in tow .
