Bobby Warren on TV
One of the local stations has a segment called "Tarheel Traveler" that recognizes people from NC and they chose to put Bobby on the program. I'm not computer literate enough to post a link but if you go to
wral.com and scroll down to the Tarheel Traveler section (almost at the bottom) and click on "75 year old still pushing pedal to metal" , you'll find about a 3 minute segment. |

Re: Bobby Warren on TV
Nice story. We should all be so lucky to live a life like that.I'll bet somewhere he had to run a young guy who was laughing to himself about running this old man.DOHHHHHHHHHHHHHH.

That was great to see...........Keep it up Bobby !!!

Re: Bobby Warren on TV
Excellent! Way to go Bobby! Jim

Re: Bobby Warren on TV
That was cool, thanks for the linkage! You would have thought that Bobby raced a pro stocker that biffed the guardrail often though. To bad they didn't have good footage of his Firebird, racing for class at Indy, or some footage of his 69 Camaro at Bowling Green!
Someone should ask Bobby if he reads the class racer forum! I find it interesting, seeing who has time for all this internet stuff, as some don't waste time on it at all, while others are full blown texters, and facebookers. |
Re: Bobby Warren on TV
That was a good segment.
Bobby did race a young guy, I beleive 19 year old, at a NHRA major event. There is an article either in the NHRA archives or Competition Plus. The story was that the race was close to Bobby's 70th birthday and Bobby beat the 19 year old for the race win. Back through the years Bobby Warren and Haywood Register had more national class records that I can remember. Some issues of National Dragster would have their name on a dozen or more class records. A very deserving honor for a big part of Stock/Superstock drag racing history, not only in North Carolina but across the country. |
Re: Bobby Warren on TV
Way cool to see a NC drag racing legend get a little airtime!!!!!!!
|
Re: Bobby Warren on TV
Way cool and they couldnt have found a nicer guy to feature. Bobby and his sons are great people and an asset to drag racing.
|
Re: Bobby Warren on TV
That was great! Very deserving. Bobby, Haywood and Jeff are all real gentlemen. Haywood works at Warren Engines.
|
Re: Bobby Warren on TV
That was great! A truely great man, and a real living legend.
|
Re: Bobby Warren on TV
Truely one of the legends of our sport.......I saw him race about 40 years ago at York for the first time. I saw him at a race a couple years ago at Maple Grove and said good morning to him......I felt like a kid looking up to an idol again.....Keep goin Bobby!
|
Re: Bobby Warren on TV
I have fond memories of Bobby and Haywood from back in the '70s at what used to be called the Summernationls at Englishtown, NJ. They were tough to beat then and Bobby is still tough to beat now; a true drag racing legend.

.....yes sir, Bobby Warren, one of the 'great ones'..
|
Re: Bobby Warren on TV
That was pretty cool!!

Re: Bobby Warren on TV
Bobby is like the energizer bunny. He keeps on going no matter what is thrown at him.
One of the best times of my life was when we had the old timers racers reunion ealier this year. Watching and listening to Bobby, Garley Daniels, and several others tell some of their stories was a time to behold. As we say down south - "good people" Doyle |
Re: Bobby Warren on TV
Bobby is a living legend, hope he is around another 75yrs.
|
Re: Bobby Warren on TV
I have been dealing with Bobby Warren for 25 years and he's always been one way, an honest and fair man. When another engine builder tried to cheat me, Bobby stood up for me and has been doing my motors ever since. I've been blessed just knowing him and honored to call him my friend.
If you want his autograph he will be at the Skipper and Simmons' Fish Fry in October at Virginia National. :) |
Re: Bobby Warren on TV
I saw Bobboy Warren at Sylacauga, Alabama in the late seventies. He was driving that "Krunchy Chicken" super stock Camaro in a big payout bracket race. I think it was for a $1000, big in those times. Talk about a country track out in the middle of dusty fields. Paul Smith's "Entertainer" funny car was match racing the "Trojan Horse". There was so much dust on the track that part of the time you couldn't see the cars at the finish line.

Re: Bobby Warren on TV
Bobby Warren has been racing longer than I have been on this earth! To get the chance to see a living legend race is one thing, to meet him and see him at his work is another. I have had the pleasure of visiting his shop pn more than one occassion. I must say the part of NC I was born and raised produced some legendary drag racers: Bobby Warren, Garley Daniels, Robert "Big R" RIchardson, David Surles, Jeff and Charlie Taylor, Vince Holmes, Jimmy Spells etc the list goes on and on. I would put the old Tar Heel state up against any other for best drag racers. I guess California might have something to say about that one lol!

Re: Bobby Warren on TV
i was stationed in jacksonville in 1975-77 and got the pleasure of watching Bobby race with us. back then we went drag racing on friday/saturday nights and on sunday during the day. i was eighteen and drove my everyday driven 69 nova to the drag strips and race it. i ran 13.00 flat for the two years i raced it. i even drove it to michigan for christmas one year. but i remember always telling myself i want one of bobby warren's cars. they were all the best they could be, the two years i spent in N.C. were i will never forget and it's because of friends like bobby.

Re: Bobby Warren on TV
Hi
Does anyone know what Bobby's most successful race car was? The 69 camaro maybe? Where is it now? Yeah... we should start a photo gallery of his former cars. Like that awesome Thunder Valley thread. |
Re: Bobby Warren on TV
Here's a pic of Mr. Bobby's World Championship Nova that I took at Kinston, NC, on a Sunday afternoon after the Blaney points meet on Saturday night.

Re: Bobby Warren on TV
Here's a couple of pics of the Nova taken by George Cureton at the 1970 World Finals at Dallas. George bought the car after the race.

Re: Bobby Warren on TV
Great to see that video of Bobby. He did some work on my car in the 70's. Had the pleasure of knowing him and racing against him in many weekly races at Florence-Darlington and Blaney. The good ole days.

My guess would be the SS/IA '67 Camaro that he won several national events with in '74. I think he may have won the Div 2 title that year also. That car was featured in a lot of magazine ads back then. He wrecked that car in a top end collision with Jim Kinnett at the Blaney points meet in 76 or 77. |

"He wrecked that car in a top end collision with Jim Kinnett at the Blaney points meet in 76 or 77."
I was at that race. That Chicken car from Alabama was pretty successful too. |
Re: Bobby Warren on TV
I saw the brown W&R Nova at the first SummerNationals and that was at York Dragway in 1970 I thought it had a black vinyl top but I think that was when George Cureton had it. At the Summer's that year, 1970....I raced a '68 Chevy II with my partner. It was a 350/295 high compression engine. Bobby's Nova was a '69 and had the 350/255 We had nothing but trouble at that event and never qualified. We had run 12.20's out there in the spring but in the summer heat we struggled and never made a decent run. Bobby went 12.29 if I remenber right in J/S and I will never forget thinking how the heck did he go that fast with a low compression engine in 80 to 90 degree weather...
I always respected the southern Div 2 racers a lot as I felt they knew how to run in the heat of the summer since they dealt with the hot weather more than us northerners.....We ran good in cool weather but they ran good even in the heat and that was not easy especially on 7" tires and pavement......We did not have concrete or traction compound treated tracks..... I think of many cars when I think of Bobby Warren.....probably the '69 Crunchy Chicken car more than any other.......he won the grace Cup I think with that ride. That was a big deal back then.... |
Re: Bobby Warren on TV
Where's Warren "Cash" Register, Bobby's partner of yore?

Re: Bobby Warren on TV
I would probably start at the source by calling Mr Bobby at Warren Racing Engines. You can reach him there almost every day.

Re: Bobby Warren on TV
A true legend. Congratulations, Mr. Warren. :)
