Seen it on the list at BRAINERD - Super Stock Qualifying

Anyone know what motor this car has.Is it the 273 ?? if so what is the rated HP and what would this car weigh.

The only performance (4 barrel) V8 available in that car was the 273/235hp. It is currently rated at 210hp. Jim

Re: 1966 Valiant SS/K ??

Clarification:

The NHRA Class. Guide lists the '66 Valiant 273 4bbl "Commando" motor as having factored HP of 210 for Stock; 230 for Super Stock.

Re: 1966 Valiant SS/K ??

Would anyone know what the legal weight would be for this car in SS/K trim...

Jim Wahl 08-14-2009 05:07 PM

Re: 1966 Valiant SS/K ??

Oops. You are correct sir! 230hp in SS and 210hp in Stk. Very unique car.Jim

230hp X 12 = 2760 + 170 = 2930lbs in SS/K

David Ley 08-14-2009 05:07 PM

Re: 1966 Valiant SS/K ??

Minimum weight for this car in SS/K trim is 2930.

Re: 1966 Valiant SS/K ??

I just like the old mopars don't see many like this in SS.You see more of them in Stock.
Thanks for the info.
My father ran SS/K back in the early to mid 80s In a Demon low Comp. 340 motor had to weigh 3520 with driver. Here is a picture of it back then.

Neat car!!! So, is the 289 'Stang (NHRA 215hp) and the 283 Duece (NHRA 241hp) that much better combos than 273 Valiant???

He must be changing valve springs after every round. I'm not sure on the math but that thing must be pulling upwards of 7900-8200 RPM

Check the recent threads on the Thunder Valley Dragway pictures, for more info on Matts car. I was talking with Al Kuehl about this car in the more recent posts to that thread, and per Al, the car ran a 10.68 @ Brainerd last May!!!

That 273 has gone 10.63 at Earlville, Iowa if my memory hasn't left yet !........ John

10.63? WOW! A little 273? Have you ever looked at the heads on a 273? Amazing! Jim

He must use the steel 340 crank! Those 273 cranks are steel but they are really crude. Jim

That's cool Al, if he can do that with a 273, I wonder what he could do with my 173. Kind of makes me want to either live closer to you guys (at least until the first snow, then not even a Top Fuel Dragster could get me away from there fast enough...ROLOL), so I could see what kind of magic he could perform on my lil' V6? That is if he'd even want to touch it??? Might not be enough cylinders, or cubes for him...lol???

Al those temp extremes you spoke of are great for racing (or during the winter time?), but once the racing is over, I want 80's +!!! The sunshine state may have the humidity, but tack on 45 degrees to your 70 degree limit, and you get a normal June to August here in the "Valley of The Sun"!!! Today we're a nice cool 105 degrees (albeit with only 10% humidity). Now how would you like that Al...?

There was an article on a U/SA 273 Mopar Wagon in Mopar Action magazine a couple of years back, it said that the 273s could run the late EFI -pre Magnum 318 "302" castings as a supercede number. Heart shaped chambers, swirl ports etc etc. Pretty good heads but they still have the little 273/318 port size. I'm thinking velocity is important with them, Perhaps these are the heads Matt runs?

Velocity is important on any Super Stock head I think it more important on the smaller motor's .

We must also remember that the carb is a tiny little AFB about the size of your fist...

Can we correctly assume this car is the quickest and fastest 273 ever....in ANY configuration?

Re: 1966 Valiant SS/K ??

Brett, I would think you could safely say that! This car is unbelievable! Most 340 cars at the same weight couldn't touch this car. You should do an article on this one!

BTW How the hell are you? I haven't seen you in years! Jim

The car is a well done piece! And trust me, Matt leaves at more the 8000, more like 9000+ rpm!

Is Matt any relation to Ron Steen? Ron raced a '66 Belvedere I ASA out of Minot ND in '66 and '67.He then drove a SSBA '68 Hemi Cuda with Steve Solveit in the late 60s.

Thanks
Dennis

In the forum on the A-Body site Matt said he has the 302 heads on his car now.

Paul, was it a slant six or 273/180 in Q and now a 273/235 in K? Air under the front wheels in Q WITH A SLANT??? That would be too cool!!!

I think in another thread you said that you had only been out once this year . There is a Stock Super Stock combo at Thunder Valley in the middle of Sept . and I think the week after that there is a National open at Pierre you should come up you could hit 2 races and see Matt's car for yourself .
Al

I'd like that idea if I was able to get the transfer I was pursuing a month ago that would've had me back in Denver by now, but since I'm still here in Phx., my cost of living is going to have to improve quite a bit before I start traveling 900 miles plus from here to places like that, but I'm interested, and seeing his car in action (when not racing my own), would definitely be cool!!!

Thanks Al

Gotta love a guy that strays from the beaten path! Love these "oddball" combos that guys are brave (smart) enough to run! This type mentality keeps stock and superstock from becoming a monkey see monkey do, cookie cutter eliminator. Way to go, keep the class racing interesting. Don Jackson
