Re: Coan turbo 350 XLT
Yes that's what I have. Have you had any issues with tearing up the clutches? I have damaged the intermediate clutches twice now hoping the latest fix is the cure. About 30 runs and it needs clutches. Joe

Re: Coan turbo 350 XLT
Yeah you're less than half the weight of mine. Yes I run the "special" fluid, I may try regular F type if I keep having to change it, don't want to break the bank on trans fluid.I guess I'd better just hope for the best.I'm sure there's a cure for tis I'm just not sure what it is. Joe

Re: Coan turbo 350 XLT
Amzoil Sure-Shift (maybe it's Super Shift?) fixed my burnt clutches on 1000 HP 'glide. It is not as slippery as straight synthetic and takes the heat better than standard F-type. The trans in dragster can hit 250 in late rounds.
We run it in our T-350 as well, 200 runs, zero issues in the 9.80 3200 lb car. |
Re: Coan turbo 350 XLT
I have one in Fred, my 71 Corvette stocker. Not a ton of runs yet (about 90) but no signs of any problems with fairly brutal use; .dead hook, 600ft lbs, 3600lb car. Ol' Fred tore up a couple of T-350's and a pretty good 400 before I bought this unit. Great so far. We use type F , TT

Re: Coan turbo 350 XLT
I would guess that no one who runs a 350 and has posted here makes the shifts at as high an RPM as Joe. That might have something to do with it. I'm not up on 350's but isn't something stopped and then rotated at engine speed (or a multiple of) when one of the shifts is made? Joe, are you sure the clutch pack is clearanced correctly. Maybe it is Trying to apply before something else releases or it is staying applied when it shouldn't be. Shift timing can be tricky. I know one other V-6 racer that tried the 350 and had problems. According to him his 2.24 ratio 350 wasn't any quicker than his 1.98 P/G.
good luck hope you get it working. |
Re: Coan turbo 350 XLT
Yes Adger the shift RPM is quite high,I'm trying running 3 intermediate clutches this time with a different friction material. 2 frictions just didn't seem to cut it in my application. As for the shift timing it appears to be OK, as I see nothing on my Dataloggers accelerometer to indicate a conflict of the clutches. Joe

Re: Coan turbo 350 XLT
On 1-2 shift intermediate drum has to swap directions, thats why supposed to start burnout in 2nd
and not shift from high to neutral (rev. pattern) at any speed besides stopped.that is what destroys intermediate sprags on th 350 rev. pattern. Mike Taylor3601 |

Re: Coan turbo 350 XLT
That's what Coan told me said you couldn't shift from high to neutral without trans not trying to swap
directions on intermediate drum not mention how many cars have been crashed by getting put in rev by accident most had rev lockout but got past somehow.Coan has clean neutral on some trans I've seen where has a second neutral past high gear {rev. pattern} Mike Taylor 3601 |
Re: Coan turbo 350 XLT
has anyone ever compared the A1 pro-flites (or whoever makes them now) with the coan XLT 350?

Re: Coan turbo 350 XLT
I thought the top stock Coan 350 xlt with double " N " shift pattern was designed / built so you could shift into " N " in the shut down and click off the motor ? Looks like a nice piece but I don't no anyone who runs one or how many runs you can get out of one ? Did call Coan and what did they say ? .....

Re: Coan turbo 350 XLT
My trans has the "clean" nuetral, that's not an issue just can't keep intermediate clutches in it.I'm hoping that the latest "fix" is the cure. Now I've been told that adding the third disc is going to slow me down, I'm not really grasping the idea however I've been told this by a few trans guys. Since I still have clearence in my clutch pack I'm unable to understand how this is going to slow me down. Can someone explain? Joe

Re: Coan turbo 350 XLT
That's right clean neutral is to shut down in neutral without trans damage or risk of accidently shift
in reverse. Joe, sounds like one of those problems ''nobody else'' has had I've been there before I don't know you but from reading you're post/replies for awhile I say you have the abilities to figure it out. You may air test piston in drum thats giving trouble see if releases as quick as others or you can stack assm.of drums like trans was together, except outside of case and apply air through pump passages and check how things are working.I found problem in 350TH that way once.I also used mitchell manual told when this was applied for this gear that was applied for that gear etc.could help track down problem. Re: Coan turbo 350 XLT
Joe , adding the 3rd clutch disc to the intermediate pack may not slow you down . You may not have enough points of contact/clutch suface area and is a possible answer as to why you are burning them up or driving through the clutch pack . I like Mikes idea on the bench test with pressure regulators . Or at lest fluid psi gage on the trans case to make shore you got the pressure you need . Its not enough clutch or not enough pressure .Good luck Joe let us know what the fit was . Ken R

Re: Coan turbo 350 XLT
Well as I suspected the 3rd disc did not slow the car in fact it made some of it's fastest runs ever. We have 7 runs on it so far I'll let it go to 25-30 then tear down for inspection. Did not notice any ill effects from the clutch pack rearrangement, hopefully it will look good at tear down. Joe

Re: Coan turbo 350 XLT
We had the same problem with our XLT. Added third clutch and now it looks like new after 100 runs. Also removed the O-rings from the steels.

Re: Coan turbo 350 XLT
Pro Trans makes a very good turbo 350.

Re: Coan turbo 350 XLT
Yeah I know, when I was calling about trans my first call was to them however the very long lead time made me look elsewhere. My logic was if it takes that long for them to build me a trans what about parts and service from what I've heard basically neither is required. So it's my own desire to quickly get a trans that landed me where I am. However I believe I have it figured out I guess some more runs will tell the tale. Joe Oh and thanks Phil hopefully I will have the same results.
