This picture was sent to me by Steve Jackson. Any of you old timers recognize this engine from days gone by?

I was thinking the same thing but I thought Terry Hoard's car was a dark color. That was a wicked ride!!!

I`m guessing that is Terry Hoards car, out of Oregon. His original "Samurai Warrier" was a R100 Mazda rotary, which I recall was also orange, like his later, and more well known RX3 Mazda.Those things were LOUD!!!

Those engines sounded 3 times faster than they were! And, in fact, some of them were fast.

my Son worked for a Mazda dealer during the late 80's - mid 90's. He said all of the Rotary engines always received a professional test drive. He would regularly talk about how they would wind up and pull forever in each gear.

Hoards car ran in the 11.30s that I know for sure. That thing was so loud that I couldn't hear my car and I was in it. Neat car.

That thing of Hoard's was bad fast, and sounded like nothing else I ever heard.

Watched a time trial at Indy in '79 one year between Hoard and Cotton Perry's 6-cylinder Pocket Rocket Nova. Those two together made much noise. Hoard's car left like a rocket.

Speaking of rotay Mazda's and "L-O-U-D"....
I was at a Div VII Points Meet at Sears Point (Infineon?) about 8 or 10 years ago... not sure about the date, and they were running a Breakout Eliminator called "SUPER", which had a 7.90 dial... Somebody had one of these 2-rotor Wankels in a Rear Engine dragster chassis and had a G.M.C. 4-71 roots-style blower bolted to the side of the engine, driving it with a conventional Gilmer belt. Every time it made a pass, everything stopped... people would stand, dead-in-their tracks... it was like two Fuelers running at once... The poor guy in the Big Block Chevy rear-engine dragster in the next lane couldn't hear his engine at all, I'm sure, because all I could hear in the stands, was that blown Mazda... WAAAAAAAAAaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa..................... Must have been a new car, because he broke out with a 7.68 (!), as I recall... It was awesome... |

I heard rumors from the racers of the day when I took those pics that he was turning 17,000rpm's in contrast to the sbc's 12-13,000rpm's. I was a distinct sound.
Steve It makes me wonder what kind of tach he had. There is an Autometer decal on there. |

There was also an RX-7, red in color, that I remember running in Seattle in the early 90's. It ran a Rotary engine, and was loud and fast.
Not sure if that was Terry Hoard, but that was a cool car! |

Jeff, that red RX7 was run by a guy whos last name was Atkins, from the Tacoma/Puyallup area. He had a shop called "Atkin`s Rotary Service" that was located behind his house.He used to regularily race at Bremerton & SIR, and later ran the car is 10.90 Super Street, with a Nash 5 speed behind the rotary. I think his first name may have been Dennis, but I can`t say for certain.
As I understand it, Terry Hoard was working on a new RX7 when NHRA eliminated Modified Eliminator in 80 or 81. Never seen (or heard! )of Terry Hoard after that. |

I had the pleasure of meeting Terry Hoard and his son or brother at the Keystones one year. We camped out at the campground next door. Uncle Jim had a co-worker that ran the white/yellow "Rotary Rattler" Mazda here in D1 and Jim worked on Wankle engines at Ingersol Rand Research. So there was a common interest in the rotary engines.
Terry was nice enough to have his exhaust end underneath the car whereas Al McEachern (Rotary Rattler) had his coming out the right side. Jim always made sure that Al parked on the right side of him. Al's car always ran better when he left the motor mounts loose...?? Al borrowed Jim's tach one day and it came back with the tell-tale pointer somewhere after the numbers left off. 12K + I probably still had a business car of Terry Hoard laying around somewhere. I seem to remember "Braaap Industries/performance" or something along those lines. Of course there are still plenty on Mazda's running at the import races. |

I "saw/HEARD" one of those screaming buzz saws run @ Bowling Green when they were "hot & faaaaast".................. for those of you who have been there..... can you imagine how that sounded???
All those rpm's echoing down between those tin roofs!!!!!!!!!! If only i had my ear plugs in THEN!!!! |

I remember making a pass next to Hoard at Woodburn. The reason I remember is because that thing is still ringing in my ears. Couldn't even hear my poor ol' Olds!
If ya' look on the quarter panel just below the window, you'll see Hoard's partner's name; Gary Parham. A co-worker crewed for Gary on his black '55 Chevy called "the Undertaker" (IIRC). C/Gas I think. I'll always remember Gary getting his foot broke when a clutch/flywheel let go. Bulged the shield and floor enough to break his foot. I bought my first 'speed equipment' from him. Edelbrock dual AFB set-up for SBC. Sorrry for the diversion; back to the Mazda's |
