Re: What Track is this?
Looks like Kinston Drag Strip . Back in the Shade Aldridge days. I went to Sanford way back ,but don't remember much how it was layed out other than it was a 1,000 ft track. (musta been how NHRA got the 1,000 ft idea) LOL..

A very narrow one.

Re: What Track is this?
That's got to be Sanford. I ran all around that track many years ago as a kid watching dad & Mr. Ebern Watson hoping one day to drive a super stocker. That is the famous Ebern Watson that wheeled the one and only "Super Rooster" camaro!

Re: What Track is this?
You look back @pics like that and wonder how any of them survived :) racing in t-shirts with cigs hanging out of their mouths in what ever they could thrown together in their garages !!!!!

Re: What Track is this?
No other guesses?
|
Re: What Track is this?
Holly Ridge?
|
Re: What Track is this?
I believe that is the old Fayetteville track. I ran that car (Law and Order, sponsored by Gordon Thompson Chevrolet) at Fayetteville, Dunn Benson and Sanford, but I don't remember Sanford being that wide, and at one time, it had grass between the lanes. I believe the picture was taken in 1970.

Re: What Track is this?
I guess it depends on one's perspective, but no picture with a Camaro in it qualifies as "old," in my book...
But then, I had 12 years of going to the drags under my belt when the Camaros came out... To me, an "old" drag strip photo has to include a flag starter, and steel wheels... LOL! |

Is the Camaro pictured the Law and Order race car to which you refer? We have been trying to identify the car at the Sanford track . Are you the first one to recognize it correctly? |

Everyone it is the old Sanford Dragstrip. Ebern you were the first to respond.
Tracy you guys and gals (Doc's daughter) sure did wear down that red clay pit area. Arnold we were trying to figure out the name of the car and who drove it. Was the car "Law and Order"? Bob Rice, I had forgotten about Holly Ridge? At the East Coast Reunion I am going to mention that track to Bret Kepner. He has started a registry for all of the drag strips. As I understand from our last conversation North Carolina had a high ranking for the number of dragstrips in our state. Now to HEMIPARTS, ladies and gentlemen, this young man is kind of close and has to listen to all of the old stories and looked at the photos. He has had the opportunity to meet and talk with many of the legends in the sport of drag racing. Last year, on the Thursday night before the reunion, he had an opportunity to experience the history of our sport first hand as the driver of one of the most famous mopars to run down the track. This car had not seen the track in years. This was a match race (remember those) against a Sox and Martin car. When he climbed out of the car, after the first round, his comment was, "I don't know how you guys lived as long as you have, driving these cars." |
Re: What Track is this?
Is that Don Carlton who drove the Motown Missile?

The driver, last year at Roxboro Dragway, was my son Chris (Hemiparts). The car was orginally driven be Don Carlton and last owned and driven by Mike Fons. The night that car went down the track was the first time, best guess, in 20 years. Chris, after driving the car that night, has had the opportunity to talk with Pappas and many of the original team members of Don Carlton racing.

Re: What Track is this?
The car in the picture was assembled by the late Tom Stenzel and myself in the summer of 1969. We set the A/S record at Gainesville on September 13, 1969 while I was still in the Navy, staioned at Cecil Field.
I brought the car home( Chapel Hill) with me in late 69 and raced it at Fayetteville, Sanford, Dunn Benson, Piedmont and Roxboro(when it was 1/4 mile). I have a picture from a 1970ND (that my Mother framed) from the same day. The classification and number on the windshield is the same. The name "Law and Order" came from Tom's street racing Chevelle. On the front fender is NHRA Record Holder and the rear quarter has Gordon THompson Chevrolet and a bowtie. Chris, thanks for the picture, and Ebern, I remember that high winding small block of yours. Those were the days! |

The Missile was completely redone after it's purchase from Irv's widow in a shop not far from where Carltons cars were built. Thats why you see alot of the unique features that Carlton used his cars on the Motown Missile ( if you ever see the Missile cars notice that the wheel tubs are not rounded as they were made from flat sheets of titanium as well as the use of titanium through out the front area or the car.) to make the cars lighter and faster. ( take it from someone whos been behind the wheel of one of these cars they are a handful) As far as Carlton never driving the car, he did make several passes on diffrent occasions in the car to help Mike with his chassis set-up. The car was pulled from a garage in Columbus OH in late 2007 by Kevin Christner and restored back to it's near orginal condition. He had hoped to use the car in a match race tour this year in support of several childrens charties untill his untimely passing in January of this year. The car is curerently in safe keeping while his family works through his estate preceedings. The only true " Carlton cars" that are known to exist 1) is in Fl that was in the Garlits museum, it has had it's original motor pulled and replaced with a large cid race motor and had the chassis updated to curent 25.1 specs. The "Wire Car" and the "yellow car " that can be seen in some of the photos from Carltons shop in NC are owned by a gentleman in CA who also owns the " Motown Missile " Pro Stock Neon from a few years back. I have heard tell of a Carlton Rod Shop Colt in FL ( Kevin and I had an appointment to see the car in Feb of this year before he passed) but I have not seen any on the track. Chris |
Re: What Track is this?
I can imagine how the car drove, I have an '82 Horizon that was done by Herb McCandless. I also know the details on what Kevin's plans were for the car. I'm no stranger to the Mopar world.
I will say this, The Yellow car was parted out in New Jersey in the early 90's. I have pics of it then and believe the body to have been scrapped. There are more Carlton/Hodges cars than you think. There are also Clyde Hodges built cars that are quite similar to Carlton cars. I will not comment on the Colt. |
Re: What Track is this?
Someone contact Tim Sloan - bet he could could identify that track!
|
Re: What Track is this?
I'll bet Tim can identify most of the cars I have pictures of at that track.

Re: What Track is this?
It looks like North Wilkesboro where racing stops to let rigs and spectators cross the track past the finish line.
Yeah, ya'll are right...Danny is old! |

Re: What Track is this?
YES I KNOW THIS TRACK WELL MY FAMILY & I RAN SANFORD FROM THE MID 50s TO THE LATE 70s. I DID EVERYTHING FROM CONSESSION STAND, TECH AND ANNOUNCE. I ALSO RACED THERE FROM 1967 TIL THE EARLY 80s. THE TRACK IS STILL THERE. SOME GUYS HAVE BEEN WORKING THERE LEVELING OUT THE PIT AREA, SAYING THEY WOULD LIKE TO GET IT BACK OPEN BUT THEY WILL NEED SOME HELP. I THINK THEY HAVE STOPPED WORKING ON IT FOR NOW. IN OUR SHOP WE HAVE A PICTURE OF THE SANFORD RACE TRACK THE SECOND WEEK IT OPENED, IT WAS A DIRT TRACK THEN. MAYBE I CAN GET HILLAREY TO PUT THE PICTURE ON HERE( I HAVE NEVER POSTED A PICTURE YET) . I THINK THE CAR IN THE PICTURE MAY BE
JAMES BULLOCK. IF YOU CAN SEE BILL GARRANGER CHEVROLETT ON THE SIDE OF THE CAR ANYWHERE THATS HIM. |
