Crossmember modifications- 67 Camaro

Hey guys has anyone modified their crossmember so you can pull the pull the oil pan without pulling the engine on a 1967Camaro small block car? If you have any suggestions and or pictures email me. Thanks and have a great week! Mike

Mike: This is a easy thing to do.First you have to strongback your motormount x-member so you don't louse your wheel or chassis alignment.Support the car on jack stands on the rear housing and the lower control arms up front,so you don't twist the chassis.Make sure it is level front to rear and side to side. Then you can cut a section out of the x-member that will clear your pan. Cut the center front to rear section that ties the two x-members together off at the motormount x-member,plate both sides with 3/8 material so you will have a thickness you can tap later for the removeable section of the x-member. Weld these cap plates in place.Make a tube 1 1/4" plus with plates on both ends, with two 3/8 holes in the plates on each end, to take the place of section you cut out, to go between the cap plates you installed.(Make sure it fits tight.) Install this at the lowest point between the cap plates transfer holes from tube x-member,drill and tap 3/8-24.Reinstall. Cap the center tie in section that ties the front and motormount x-members together. Then make a bracket from the tube section of the new motormount x-member to the cap on the center front to rear section that ties the front and motormount x-members together.Drill two 3/8 clerance holes and attach together. If you need a sketch. tptd477@hotmail.com Ted P. You know Mike, this post looks so familar. When I started reading this post I began to think wow, this is exactly how my 1967 z28 D/S camaro is set up. Then, as I read a little further, I noticed there is a reason for that: Chassis Master is the same people who modified my cross member to allow oil pan removal. They did a real neat professional job.

Dave,
Download Picasa free from Google at http://picasa.google.com.
It is a great picture "manager" program. After you install it, it will "index" all of your photos by chronological order.
Anyway, regarding resizing, it includes a simple crop tool, and under Tools, there is a setting for what size to email pics as. Set it to whatever your preference is.
Email yourself the pic, and then you can upload it.

Is this a "NHRA" approved method for a stocker? If so, I need to do that. Thanks for the pics. Very helpful.

Actually, the factory shop manual describes how you can take the pan off the engine in the car on a 1967 Camaro as a regular service procedure.

yup i spoke to one of the div.1 tech guys, and he qouted the rule book , which just says that it must be properly re-enforced.
more or less I was told not to put a single round tube in, they didn,t want it being done just to lighten it up.
