Ride-Along Video In a J/Stock Chevy II 4-Speed
I'd love to have a stick car as a "for fun" race car.

Re: Ride-Along Video In a J/Stock Chevy II 4-Speed
Great Video....anyone else notice the drivers left leg when he changes gears?
|
Re: Ride-Along Video In a J/Stock Chevy II 4-Speed
Yes - I noticed how quickly that left leg got the clutch in and out on the gear changes - in fact it was so quick you didn't even see the leg move!
|
Re: Ride-Along Video In a J/Stock Chevy II 4-Speed
Watch the ride along video from outside the car! Wild sounding little thing.
|
Re: Ride-Along Video In a J/Stock Chevy II 4-Speed

Re: Ride-Along Video In a J/Stock Chevy II 4-Speed
Good video :) As far as the left leg, i swear i remember reading this somewhere  "Clutch must be used to change gears in a conventional manner" LOL

Re: Ride-Along Video In a J/Stock Chevy II 4-Speed
Im sure all the stick racers just love that video as will NHRA tech dept. Nice move ! Its probably the only one like that though.
|
Re: Ride-Along Video In a J/Stock Chevy II 4-Speed
C'mon now NHRA tech guys know we all use the clutch on gear changes!!! If you don't believe us call Jerico

Re: Ride-Along Video In a J/Stock Chevy II 4-Speed
Just grind and file a few synco rings and start yankin. You don't need no stinkin $4000.00 transmission. Not for a little while anyway.

Re: Ride-Along Video In a J/Stock Chevy II 4-Speed
Very cool video Joe. Sorry I missed the last race at Cordova. See ya next year, Craig (79 dodge aspen I/SA)

Re: Ride-Along Video In a J/Stock Chevy II 4-Speed
I dig the dry hop
|
Re: Ride-Along Video In a J/Stock Chevy II 4-Speed
If you watch very carefully in super super slow mo you can see clutch being used on gear changes.
I miss dry hops I'll do one every know and then testing. Mike Taylor3601 |
Re: Ride-Along Video In a J/Stock Chevy II 4-Speed
I have slowed the video down to the point that my computer almost crashes and i fail to see much movement on the left leg after the clutch is dropped on the starting line... LOL
|
Re: Ride-Along Video In a J/Stock Chevy II 4-Speed
Maybe you blinked on gear changes and missed leg movement it's really quick even in slow mo.
Mike Taylor3601 |
Re: Ride-Along Video In a J/Stock Chevy II 4-Speed
Of course he's moving his leg on the gear changes. The good ones move so fast, it's hard to see!!
|
Re: Ride-Along Video In a J/Stock Chevy II 4-Speed
I've posted this before, but here it is again. In-car from my stocker.

Re: Ride-Along Video In a J/Stock Chevy II 4-Speed
I have looked at all these videos and I can't see anyones left leg move, thats real "Slick" shifted.
|
Re: Ride-Along Video In a J/Stock Chevy II 4-Speed
Old men would use their entire leg to pound a 3400# clutch that's a dinosaur of days gone by. Today's clutches, especially like the Advanced Clutch used by James in his Chevy II here, only require a light tap on the pedal; a flick of the foot or even a tap with his big toe is adequate. Interrupting the clutch for a micro-second and very little movement is all that is required.
You would probably be able to see that action in the video if not for his right leg being in the way. Now all of you Stock racers that rely on e-shift, compressed air or other means of shifting up a gear, you can relax now...:p |
Re: Ride-Along Video In a J/Stock Chevy II 4-Speed
I may have got things wrong, but I thought drag racers did not use the clutch while shifting. I thought that's why it seems they're pulling the stick so damn hard, and as mentioned it doesn't look like the guy in that Nova (or any other guy I've watched for that matter) moves his leg at all.
I get what you're saying Jeff, but I think you should see at least a trace of movement if he used the clutch. I may still be wrong though... :D |
Re: Ride-Along Video In a J/Stock Chevy II 4-Speed
I know its not recommened but some people still shift against the rev limiter.
|
Re: Ride-Along Video In a J/Stock Chevy II 4-Speed
Very cool video,5 stars.

The life long dedication and refinement of the art of shifting is demonstrated here for all the world to view. James has elevated his art to such a higher standard that many may not even recognize what they are witnessing. It's sad but it's just a fact of life that many can't appreciate what they are witnessing. |
Re: Ride-Along Video In a J/Stock Chevy II 4-Speed
Jeff, I was able to appreciate Jim's more conventional(ie.pre-historic) operation of the clutch pedal as he shifted coming back on the return road. Undoubtedly due to the lower RPM. And concern for his passenger,LOL. Of course, my 60+ year old eyes don't catch everything. These video's definitely make me lust for that additional pedal in my car.
I was curious about one thing though. What is the purpose of the repeated clutch action as he is staging? Or am I just a confused old man? |
Re: Ride-Along Video In a J/Stock Chevy II 4-Speed
So thats why those guys had so many women at the end of the pits at Indy!

Re: Ride-Along Video In a J/Stock Chevy II 4-Speed
Ken,
After pre-stage, a stick racer sets the brake pressure and uses the linelock to hold the pressure. "Bumping" the clutch allows the driving to stage the car under light brake pressure. I'm assuming this is what you're referring to??? |
Re: Ride-Along Video In a J/Stock Chevy II 4-Speed
Yep. Thanks Mike. I thought that was probably it, but it seemed a little 'exagerrated' or something. I better go watch it again. I might learn something.
|
Re: Ride-Along Video In a J/Stock Chevy II 4-Speed
If you have to REALLY bump it in, you might have the brake pressure too high. 50-75 pounds is plenty to keep the car from moving forward as long as you have adequate air-gap. If you have a really tight air-gap it may require more brake pressure to hold the car on the line as you go WOT.

Re: Ride-Along Video In a J/Stock Chevy II 4-Speed
Any you old stick guys remember Hay's Mark XII pressure plates 3200 lbs static press, had to have seat
belts to hold you down in seat while pushed clutch pedal down. MarkXII w/Ram 6 bronze paddle disc when you launched them it felt like your're car got rearended by a truck. We were ignorant (hope I spelled that right, that would be ironic to spell ignorant wrong)didn't want clutch to slip or have fancy smancy rev limiters or line locs but we liked'ddd thaaat waaay.LOL Mike Taylor 3601 BTW anyone that thinks automatics are still cheaper needs to do some price checking. auto or stick now almost same money. |
