Somebody should have caught this
Looks like Bob Phillips dialed for 1/4 mile instead of 1/8 mile in round 4. How could this happen? By rule don't you have to at least dial the index? How can you dial 10.63 in a GT/IA car in the 1/8th? GT/IA is 7.39 for 1/8 mile ...

Re: Somebody should have caught this
Chuck,
The officials were so enthralled w/A.B. in the other lane that they couldn't catch a cold. You are absolutely correct Chuck..this should be a re-run. |
Re: Somebody should have caught this
As much as I hate to say it it is the racers responsebility to place the correct dial on their car and check it before staging. I can see how with all the weather and changing to half track a racer could get turned around, a bad deal for him, but a mistake I'm certain he will never make again. Sure glad I stopped racing with IHRA race looked like a first class cluster. Joe

Re: Somebody should have caught this
Yes Joe, I agree with you, but in class racing by rule you can't dial slower than the index ...
|
Re: Somebody should have caught this
page 128 in the rule book says you're right Chuck. But it also states if they have functioning scoreboards that display the dail-ins,any racer staging his car has accepted that dail-in,right or wrong. Not sure if they have the boards, how the rule was used or if it was even used.

Re: Somebody should have caught this
Yes I know Chuck, I suppose a sharp official should have caught it, the guy who radios up the dials or even the person putting the dials in the system. my understanding is when they enter a car # all the previous info is shown for that car, you would think had they saw the BIG difference in what he'd ran the previous round that would have raised a flag. Quick story, first round Stanton points race my guy and I are strapped in and 3 pairs back when I notice he has no dial on his car, I wave to him and tell him about it, luckily Jacque was standing nearby and I got her to put his dial on. Now I know this guy has raced for a few days so I guess we can all have a MOMENT. Still I agree that some official should have noticed this. Joe P.S. hey I missed you at the last Buckeye S/SS race, everything OK?

Re: Somebody should have caught this
Everything is great Joe, thanks for asking ... had other things going on that weekend and racing is kind of fading from my 'fun list'. Take care and hope to see you somewhere next year ...

Harley? Man then you gotta get a bigger trailer so you can haul the Bike. It is kinda nice going out for a ride during some of the longer races. Joe

Re: Somebody should have caught this
Ok, the secret is out, yes I did, bought a 2002 Fatboy ... nice ride, it would be great to bring it to the track, might try to figure something out to make it fit in my trailer ..

Re: Somebody should have caught this
Congatulations......Enjoy but be careful. There are a lot of crazy drivers out there.
|
Re: Somebody should have caught this
Chuck, last February I put my 110 Eagle in the trailer along with my camaro and went to bike week in Daytona and drag racing in Orlando. Life's to short enjoy every moment.

Re: Somebody should have caught this
the bad part about the whole dial in thing is that we had a 1/8 mile time run that morning along with 1 rd the day before in the 1/8 mile......plus the announcer said that it was almost a 5 second spot before eather car staiged and Bertozzi took a aweful long time to pre stage and Bob staiged first......
PS-im not picking at Bob i like Bob ran him a few times nice guy.....the tower reads the dial ins off the car also before you go into the water....i agree someone should have stopped them considering the tower mentioned a 5 second spot with officials in the tower and was way over the index....hope this clears anything up....i see where he made the mistake i still had a 10 on my car this morning....me and dad joked about forgetting to take it off before the Bob and Anthony run happend |

Re: Somebody should have caught this
I wonder what would have happened if he had left the line, spun real bad, lifted, got back in it and ran 10.630 on a 10.63 dial at the 1/8 mile and won the round.Could his opponent have asked for a rerun on the grounds that he didn't at least dial the index?
|
Re: Somebody should have caught this
I would think there would be someone with knowledge doing, or watching, the dial-ins in the tower to check for such instances. 2005 Norwalk, a B/SA racer (I want to say it was Keith Lynch) had a dial-in on the board (not the car) of 11.71, or something over the (11.55) Index. I didn't notice til the tree was counting down. You'd think somone (in the tower or head of staging) would have looked and said "Hey, that car is dialed over their Index".

Re: Somebody should have caught this
X-tech, I rode most of the summer (about 1500 miles) and I know what you mean about crazy drivers. I am always on the defense. Sterling, sounds like a lot of fun, it would be very tough to get my bike in my trailer, Harley's are fairly large bikes ... Darryl, interesting observation, what would have happened if he would have run that number in the 1/8th ...

Re: Somebody should have caught this
unfortunate for Bob as he has had a good year otherwise.

Wouldn't a good software programmer have the system set up where you cannot enter a dial in above the index? |
Re: Somebody should have caught this
The way the five days of racing went at Rockingham........it doesn't surprise me a bit that this happened! Just another thing to add to the total CF that this event was!!
I said at last year's spring race at Rockingham that I would never go back, but they baited me in by having the All Stars and Tournament of Champions race scheduled there! So I went. Well, let me tell you, I don't care what race they are having there, until MAJOR improvements are done at that track, I will never go back!!! And I hope IHRA learned a valuable lesson.........way too many time trials and too many events scheduled into one long weekend will not work!!! Had they just had the All Stars and TOC races, we would have easily finished on or before Sunday!!! I vote to have the All Stars Race and TOC at MIR in April!!! |
Re: Somebody should have caught this
MIR? I'm sure the competitors from TX think thats a great idea... and the northern racers who won't have but maybe a handful of laps before they race for the allstars and world championship in April?? Doesn't it rain alot in April?..
Cut it up, don't put the sportsman racers thru any more.. I already wasted a grand to sit in NC for 5 days. How much more do I gotta pay to get my 2009 points fund bonus? |
Re: Somebody should have caught this
I agree (vote) with Bryan that this was a total Cluster Foxtrot, but MIR's abilty to handle the administration of getting racers into the event recently demonstrated at the President's Cup doesn't bode well for them as the facility to hold the Finals. The whole TOC format was destined to falter from the get-go. IHRA just tried to emulate NASCAR and NHRA by coming up with this "trendy" scheme to "keep up with the Jones". How would you like to drive 1400 miles from Kansas and sit w/a qualified car in the trailer for five days, never making a run down the track, and then be told...."never mind"...we'll let you know later when we'll finish this debacle.

Re: Somebody should have caught this
I have a sugestion over on the 90 forum. take a look and see what you think.
|
Re: Somebody should have caught this
I witnessed the incorrect dial too and I have been building on a stocker over the last year. I have had a little trouble keeping it under the index, but witnessing what happened soI guess that I can dial whatever. what's a 10.60 dial in the eigth-mile convert to in the quarter...bout 17.00...yeah I think I can get in on that dial.
|
Re: Somebody should have caught this
I always thought the driver was responsible for his/her dial in. Once he/she stages they accept it right or wrong even if it is over the index. Did something change?
|
Re: Somebody should have caught this
Terry, I believe that is still the case, as it should be. BUT, I would think there would be someone to check that cars are dialing the Index. Wonder if something like Bobby suggested, software that would check for that. On a timeslip, it'll say Left (meaning lane) 1302 (car #) DF/S 15.90 (Index). Wonder if something could be added so that if I or another DF/S dials 15.91 or slower, the dial-in, when entered, will flash red on the computer in the tower and alert someone?
BTW, Terry, How's Dyno Don doing? Did he sell the car? You can PM or e-mail me. See you guys next weekend? dragrace1302@verizon.net |
Re: Somebody should have caught this
Mike (Lyons that is). I too spent damn near a grand to get there and back only to make 5 runs in 6 days, only 1 being an eliminator run.
My MIR suggestion wasn't serious, but what track does IHRA have that is capable of holding this event that is centrally located? I can't think of any! Rockingham just isn't the place! That track needs major work and I won't miss the place if I never go back. I loved the idea they had, just shouldn't have had the "Last Chance" Sportsnational!!! And without the Top Fuel Oilers, we would have easily gotten done with both the All Stars and TOC!!! They could have had the 2 qualifying runs on Thursday, start eliminations of the TOC Friday am, then do the All Stars on Saturday!!! Could have easily wrapped things up before the rain on Sunday!!! But I still think the track was a major contributor to this event not getting anywere close to completion!!! |
Re: Somebody should have caught this
Excellant point Bryan, exactly why if they do reschedule it, how will they now keep that race from being a disaster and adding to the misery. I personally will not be attending as I risk losing my job at this point.
