Blog of the building of a Challenger Drag Pak

Well, not that anyone cares , I am really doing it so I keep a record of what I do on what day, for my own history of this and that.

I started a blog on our Drag Pak #24 at blogspot.

Im not going to divulge any "Secret Squirrel" stuff that I think will make us competitive but Its a running progress for anyone that cares....with pictures from time to time.

Cheers all

Ok, mine is @ B & B race cars in Tenn. I am working on two 5.9 for stock and ss. We will also work on the dyno on the 6.1 and 5.7. I already got lots of stuff for the driveline. We will use a 8 3/4 742 case with the special Jim Bailey treatment. We are going to paint it B5 (1970) and it will look like the 2010 Classic Pkg on the Challenger. No Decals.
Plan on running in H/SA unless with the large driver it goes into I/SA. We already got the Fast system working on our GT/FA but we don't think we are even close to the bottom. It is # 16. B & B will do the cage, rear axle, rear brakes and some other stuff. My body shop will paint the car. That's my blog. I'm too old to blog. I am not too old, however, to drink beer.

I wondered who was getting the 5.9's last I talked to Gary Stanton they had just finished them up.....all 4 of them I think :)

I was kinda (sort of) dissapointed we didint order one and build it as a 6.1....oh well.....

Sounds slick.

What pro gears are you using with a 742 ? or arent you ?

Cheers

We have at least one 360. We aren't using a pro gear, a Jim Bailey treated gear. Probably start with a 4.88. I figure if I can't break one with my large orange barge @ 3750 lbs, the 3370 challenger should be a breeze. Park the 6.1 and use a 360. Kinda hard to park a 10-15K motor, but it ain't goin anywhere. I figure Irvin Johns will find all the details, and then we can steal them. Cheap & Easy

Chris "drooze" Wertman 11-24-2009 09:16 PM

Re: Blog of the building of a Challenger Drag Pak

There you go, well be pulling our motor after Gainesville and going with a more "trick" setup, well use the other as our backup. Im hoping the 2nd motor is done by then...(Im doing it so if its not its noones fault but mine)

Why the 360 out of curiosity ? I know the reasons I might have chosen it but Im curious about the people that actually did....

Re: Blog of the building of a Challenger Drag Pak

We ran that motor for years in T/STK. Have run as fast as 9.52 @ 138 with it @ 2900 lbs in our Duster that we currently run in GT/FA. With the old T/STK motor with narrowed runners and dome pistons removed we ran 9.85 @ 132 @ 3075 lbs in GT/FA @ Reynolds in Oct. and it is now EFI Fast System. Still on 9" tires, still footbraking. Funny that the 360 combo was almost exactly what we ran for years. The cam is just north of legal for stock eliminator and has stock hydraulic rollers. So I thought I would try the motor in H/SA. I don't think I can get it to minimum cause I weigh just south of 300.

I will be doing #53. I have thinking about everything from replicating my Tor-Red 2010 classic to the team colors from the 90's like my truck. Or something entirely different. Jeff what are you going to run for rims to create the classic look?

I just returned form Livonia from getting mine.... I'm STILL trying to get over the 18 hour return trip... Left there Tuesday morning at 7:30 am and pulled into central Florida at 3:30 am on Wednesday... I like Jeff am too old to do this or blog... But, I'm very excited to start on #43 next week..... Takash Race Craft in Orlando is doing all my chassis work. Still discussing paint. Have the FAST system, Aeromotive fuel system, Billet Wheels and Hoosier tires..... Plan on A/SA........ More as we go!!!!!

Re: Blog of the building of a Challenger Drag Pak

I have Welds, however if I can run fast enough, I think some Torque II can be had @ 4.5 in. wide for the front and 10 in the rear. We sold several B5 2009/10 Challengers with the classic pkg. I really like them, and my Duster is 70 B5 Blue. I figure B5, black hood, black rocker panel, R/T stripes and I'm not sure on the spoiler. The Classic has it body color, but I think the original T/A had a black spoiler. Easy enough to check. My son has two original unrestored Challenger T/A's and lives next door. We are building a really trick 5.9 for SS. We think we can make at least an additional 50 hp from last year, and maybe more. Should be fun. We might even outrun a bow tie (tape your mouth shut). More later. Going to Grand Isle, LA for Thanksgiving with 4 kids, 9 grandkids, 4 dogs, and my wife.

On Nov 20th 2009, the Challenger DP #24 came home to New Hemi Racing in Barberton Ohio

On Saturday Feb 27th 2010 she made her maiden pass at Atlanta.

Thanks to all here who have helped with your knowledge , resources, and suggestions.

Thank you so very much.

Everything went well, she ran perfect, we couldnt have hoped or dreamed for any better. No issues, no gremlins (that hadnt already been found) , Launched great, hard , straight, true, stopped like it should have, what a machine.

Only 1 we ran behind time wise and after cage cert and tech, and scales and chassis setup, we were litteraly the last car allowed in the staging lanes, 13 hour day for 1 pass, and wed do it all over every day :)

Lots of pics from today at Flickrhttp://www.flickr.com/photos/newhemiracing/sets/72157623523226962/

Thanks again everyone who helped, encouraged, and wished us well.

Thank you.

Edit....and of course the shamless plug for the blog site in case anyone has been living under a large toadstool :)

http://newhemiracing.blogspot.com/

Not that the car is done, known only to a few people this is not my first car, by any stretch, but it has been a long time, I stopped because of 1 reason, a CAR can never be "done", wherea with my bikes they can be, I can step back and say "Perfect" ill never change a thing, but a car as you all know isnt like that, (at least none of mine have) there is always a tweak or change or whatever. But for TODAY shes done ....

Congrads on your trip to the track. 13 hour day for 1 pass, and wed do it all over every day. Better get use to that at a NHRA event we have all been there for no runs for days. The megasquirt is it 3 version? Have some friends using the megasquirt stuff with turbos and NOS been going to try it have not yet new car have bigger fish to fry before I get to that. Oh yeah What did it run? and did you anounce who your drive was yet? When is your first race?

Re: Blog of the building of a Challenger Drag Pak

Its an MS2 with some trick code and aux inputs/outputs, all legal.

But the MS3 isnt available yet, when it is it will go in the car, there are only I think 3 handbuilt MS3 prototypes on the planet, but sice all the connections were , we just had to run a seperate box for the COP with the MS2, the MS3 its all part of it. And the MS3 isnt on the accepted products list, the MS2 is, an MS2 can do all the things an MS3 can if youre willing to do all the legwork, the MS3 just does it out of the box as it were, we took the long road, but bam does she run good.

Nope, didnt announce the driver , they were only good through Gainesville, but now Gainesville is looking sketchy for them, they have work related issues we are aware of and well....well see.....otherwise after they get that squared away they will be on and off, I and the old man are going to drive more than previousy expected. We are also probably going to have a div champ friend of his drive for us which reminds me I have to call him.....

The old man is quick...my choice would be to have him get used to the car and drive and I can ONLY concentrate on keeping it running prime. As long as one of us grades up, but I cannot see doing both, driving and worrying about the car, 1 will suffer.....so I think since I enjoy it and the old man is quicker, he drives it and blows it up, I put it back together sounds like a plan.

Im going to us a Microsquirt I think with 2 batch in jection and wasted spark on my 5.7 for my 72 Challenger, cheap, easy....and when the MS3 does get released, probably in Junish ? Ill upgrade to that.

I believe you were going to turbo the 5.7 for your 72 Challenger? If you plan on leaving the engine stock and are okay to run 6-8 psi of boost, read no further......

Depends on your camshaft selection and the amount of boost, you may want to get rid of the wasted spark. If there is any unburnt fuel left in the chamber when the exhaust valve opens as the waste spark fires, it'll look like someone took a cutting torch to the exhaust valves. Don't ask me how I know..... To play it safe, get yourself some 6.1 coil packs, 6.1 coil pack plug ends and 6.1 valve covers. Cut the 5.7 coil pack plug ends off and wire in the 6.1's and you'll be good to go.

Gotcha, only problem is the other 5.7's I have have 6.1 packs :) Dono why but they do, later stuff I think, same part numbers on em....3 pin connectors, I hope like hell they are the same Im running a mix an match on the DP :)

Im only going to run a few pounds, plus Im running E-85 in it.....I want some really loud fans :)

That and the 6 speed should make for a fun ride.....just gotta decided on a color to paint it, I was thinking Panter Pink with a "Mod Top".....takes a man with stones to drive a pink car...

But I have a complete new black interior so, the mod tops look best with white...

I was thinking of using the material that is like mod top but more paisley from a 70 Imperial for the roof, be different :D

I've been using the Megasquirt stuff in a 53 Stude/500 Cad bracket car for about four years. Easy to build and works great. The Megasquirt stuff is cheap, the rest of the required stuff to convert to efi,not so much.

With dual plugs and coil packs do the 6.1 do they fire at the same time or different times to have a longer spark timing? Also what after market system are being used to work on ignition side of electrical system?
