Proform Ring Filer
 

I'm looking to buy a Proform electric piston ring filer. What are the Pros & Cons?
I'd consider buying a used one if somebody had one they weren't using anymore.

the pro form filer works well. but it does have a little slop in it. do to the grinding wheel mount having some runout. it's not a big deal once you get a feel for it. it winds up cutting a little more than set it to . but once you get that number, you just set it to cut less.and your good . i have also used the older childs and albert filer in the past ,no comparison. it's a much better made unit . it's deadly accurate but cost a bunch more.

The ABS ring filer is the most user friendly and best quality out there.

We've had a Goodson electric ring filer for at least 15 years. Works very well, and is reliable. The big thing about the electric ring filers is rechargeable batteries. The quality of those batteries and the chargers can vary wildly.

The Cons are China Junk at its Finest. Its a POOR COPY of the Childs & Albert model. Don't waist your time and money. You all ready bought of on spending over $ 200.00. Spend the extra money and get a Childs & Albert or the Goodson ring file. You will be Glade you did.

I have to agree with Ron & Jim, they are junk, I have one that was used once I'll sell cheap!.....lol The problem is, if anyone buys the POS they'll use it once and want to sell it too. :eek:Truthfully, I wouldn't sell it cause I don't want to screw anybody out their hard earned cash. It just sits in a cabinet as a reminder....

I have a proform filer and have been quite plesed with it. Its not a 450 dollar filer by anymeans, but I feel it is quite an upgrade from a hand filer. It takes a while to develop a technique to get consistent results but just start slow and its not that bad. I would definately not say its a piece of junk. For the money i think it does what it is intended to do. I dont even use the dial indicator what soever cuz i couldnt get consistent results. But like i said its head and neck above a hand filer and leaves an excellent finish on the ends unlike a hand filer. You still have to debur them but not very much. Just my opinion but i like mine.

I decided I couldn't reasonably justify laying down the $700+ on a "pro" unit. I simply don't use it enough, however with the price of racing rings these days, it wouldn't take many screw-ups to pay for one. In saying that, I decided to build one. I have machined the turn-table most of the other small pieces already. The motor and controller will arrive in a week.
I have a real issue in buying Chinese, other than the occasional dinner. I try to only buy North American built whenever I can, but as we all know that's getting darn hard to do.
Anyway, I'll post my project results when I'm done.

well hey thats even better than either of the other options. the thing i dont like about the proform is the fact it just jams the end of the ring into the side of the wheel and the wheel deflects. and over time the wheel will develop a low spot where the ring continually rides. the better ones run the ring all the way across the wheel thus keeping the end of the ring truer and the wheel true at the same time. i tried to figure out a way to change the orientation of mine but couldnt do it. i just frequently change the wheels as they are just a couple bucks a piece and rings are a lot more. good luck and i would like to see some pics.

I have a new Childs and Albert ring filer for sale if someone wants it. $350, brand new, just been sitting here.

I'll cover shipping to lower states.
