Any Celebs or Sports Stars ?
Just wondering if there are any celebs or sports stars in, or related to, any of the racing community?
I know Anthony Bertozzi's brother-in-law is Rob Nen the pitcher. Roger Keeling's son is now famous. There's a Loewen in baseball and a Witten in football - don't know if they are related to the racers. Doyle #296 St & SS |
Re: Any Celebs or Sports Stars ?
My grandson, Greg Zlatkin, tried out for pre teen baseball and got selected for the team.
I think he'll be famous one day although probably not for baseball. |
Re: Any Celebs or Sports Stars ?
Former pro pitcher Eric Bell runs a very pretty SS Challenger out in D7.

Re: Any Celebs or Sports Stars ?
Are we going on current racers, or of all time? If we're going all time, former NFL Quarterback Dan Pastorini raced Top Fuel in the 1980's and won the Southern Nationals in Atlanta in '86. Jack Clark owned a T/F car in the 1990's with some success with drivers Tom McEwen and John Andretti (yep, THAT John Andretti). Tom Hammonds (Pro Stock and NMCA Pro Street) and Larry Nance (owner of a Pro Mod) are former NBA stars. A former golfer (his name escapes me at the moment) owned (maybe still does) a Top Alcohol Funny Car. There are probably more that I am forgetting.

Re: Any Celebs or Sports Stars ?
Hmmm....maybe my life is different, the Celbs and Racing guys ARE the stars...to me....I grew up and the Racing people WERE the Stars....maybe coming from a Goodyear family and racing being a big part of our lives....but....well..
Garlits, Purdohme, Muldowney, Dont like Force or Kalitta...but they are "Stars" and Celebs in their own right. Outside of Drag Foyt, Andretti, Petty, Eddie Lawson, Santiago Herroro,...etc etc..... Hmmm....dont know of any baseball, football or basketball stars, who are competent drag racers, might be some, but I also dont know many Drag Racers that can throw 3 pointers or run 100yards dogging an weaving at a pro level.......but they are only stars in their own sport.... Celebs...same thing...I was invited to the Emmys about 2 years ago and I didnt know who was who, I recognized about 4 people by name, Trump because he was in our blacony and stood behind me coming down the red carpet. and like 3 other people...that was it.....My wife (at the time) knew every single one of them. Guess its all relative , to me the Racing Guys ARE the Stars, and the Celebs....but I dont watch TV so.....they are the people I read about, remeber, and enjoy their exploits. Quote:

Re: Any Celebs or Sports Stars ?
I don't think Paris Hilton races but imagine the press coverage!
Former hockey star Eddie Belfour... http://www.belfour.com/index.php?opt...d=27&Itemid=26 And this from a story about Cayuga... ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- And former NHL star defenceman Marty McSorley grew up in Cayuga and hocked hot dogs and soft drinks at both the oval and drag strip as a summer job. "I remember Don Prudhomme and Shirley Muldowney, these were drivers on Wide World of Sports, and they were coming into my community," McSorley recalled. "I used to go out and sell pops, I used to sweep up around the buildings and the stands ... to make extra money. That money helped me buy hockey equipment so I could keep playing hockey in the winter. "It was growing up, that's what it was about. It was an opportunity to grow up and experience a pro sport and learn about the business side of things." |

Thanks a lot I have been trying to remember Doug Gray - I raced against him at Darlington a long time ago. Plus my son plays a lot of their old songs. Yes I'm getting old. Doyle |

Re: Any Celebs or Sports Stars ?
Jay Leno did a burnout in I believe it was Mark Pawuks' pro stocker once on the Late Show. Also i believe PGA pro Scott Simpson ran a S/G roadster. Jay Don Blake another PGA pro is a drag racer as well.

Top Alcohol Funny car driver Nancy Matter won a grammy or two. and has been involved with dozens of records that went gold or platinum.

Re: Any Celebs or Sports Stars ?
Isn't tv announcer "Army" Armstrong from Ky. a "super" racer? I seem to remember him mentioning something about his super gas car once while he was announcing a tractor pull. Travis Miller would probably know for sure.

Re: Any Celebs or Sports Stars ?
Rob Deer, former MLB player with the Brewers and other teams used to race S/St and S/G. He is a hitting coach in the minor leagues and I met him at one of our single-A team's games last year. Nice guy, but we didn't get a chance to talk racing.
Mauri Rose who runs Comp Eliminator is I believe the grandson of the Indy 500 winner with the same name. Not really a celeb, but cool nonetheless. Didn't Troy Vincent from the Philadelphia Eagles throw a leg over a pro stock bike once or twice? I know he owned a team for a while, but I thought he rode a few times as well. Steve Goldberg has run a car down the strip at the Norwalk Chrysler Classic a time or two. We were racing at an IRP bracket race one time, when a group of BMW's and Mercedes rolled in. They were WAY faster than they looked! After one of them lowered the dark tinted windows, I saw that it was Tony Siragusa, then with the Indianapolis Colts. The other rides were also driven by Colts players! |
