Re: Who was the first 10 sec. stick Stocker and
Tony Pizzi in 1970 with a 427 COPO Camaro was the first Jr. Stocker. JimWaldo may have been the first after Stock was reinstituted.

Re: Who was the first 10 sec. stick Stocker and
Kent Hanley with his 302 don't remember year thing it was late 80's.

Re: Who was the first 10 sec. stick Stocker and
Kent had the first small block stocker to run a 10.
I think Dwight was right about Jim Waldo. |

Re: Who was the first 10 sec. stick Stocker and
I do belive Jim Waldo was the first 10-sec Stocker. I have a magazine article on this car at the shop somewhere.

Yeah, I think you're right. Mike may have been the first carbureted small block automatic in the 10's.

Re: Who was the first 10 sec. stick Stocker and
I know the 302 car was the first smallblock period to do it. I had the first sb auto car to do it at the 95 winternationals. I went 10.99 in E/SA with my 71 Duster 340. Within a few hundreths was also Gene Buell and Linda Myers, both with E/SA 340 cars.I believe Woodro Josey did it a few months later also. Ken Etter

Re: Who was the first 10 sec. stick Stocker and
I believe I was the 1st small block stocker in the 10's. I went a few 90s in the fall of 1990 then went as quick as a 10.86 at 122.5 in the spring of 91 ( as per an old National Dragster of April 11,1991). Hopes this helps I was running D/S with my 67 302 Z-28 Camaro

The first iteration of Kent's 302 was in that car and ran 11.19@121 in 1982. Kent bought it in 1985 and he did much better with it than I did. |

Re: Who was the first 10 sec. stick Stocker and
Ken: I believe you are correct that you had the first small block auto in the 10's. I was there and watched your pass! I was then racing and still run a 340 car, so I watched everybody pretty close in mid 90's and never heard of another car going that fast at either a divisional or National event!! PS: I recall numerous articles and ads that stated Jim Waldo had first stocker in 10's although I didn't observe that run myself...........................By the way if it wasn't for Al and Ken Etters help we would have quit Stock Eliminator after the first few races.:D Irving Family Racing:

Pretty sure it was Jim Waldo as well. Someone else will have to help with the date. Appears he's won a few times.

Re: Who was the first 10 sec. stick Stocker and
It Was some fuzz when Bobby D ran first in the 9's at mission that Waldo did his first in the 10's almost exactly 20 years before(i think) or something That is i guess under current(evolving) rules....what was different with the car Mark Y talk about and the rules back then?

Re: Who was the first 10 sec. stick Stocker and
No Dwight, Just giving credit where it is due, that was a bad@ss 302 though. Looks like the answer is Waldo. Maybe the Waldos will chime in.

Thanks Guys for the history lesson. It is really cool to hear all the stories about all the old rides that made the history and sometime from those that made it.

Re: Who was the first 10 sec. stick Stocker and
I believe that the camshaft rules would have been roughly the same for a Stocker in 1971 as in 1978. Stock lift, duration, and overlap specs were enforced in both instances.
The piston in 1971 would have been required to have only the reliefs placed where they were needed for valve/piston clearance and they would have been no deeper than required for actual valve clearance. In 1978 the piston top would have been required to conform to the factory configuration. I don't have a '71 Rulebook and I don't know what horsepower ratings were established in either instance. The Corvette appears to me to have been a '66 while Jim's car was a '67 Fairlane, I believe. The Corvette (if it was a '66) would have been a 427 with a single Holley. Jim's car might have been either a single or dual quad motor. It seems to me that he ran it both ways at various times but most commonly with a single carburetor. |

Re: Who was the first 10 sec. stick Stocker and
Old stock vs new stock...........A cars minimum weight was the shipping weight back in the old days. No driver weight was accounted for. You were allowed 5 gals of gas and if you were light you could add a spare.
If you had a driver that was light, you had an edge. Pistons......rings could be moved up and you could run any rings. Forgedtrues were pretty popular...... Valve springs had to check at stock pressures and we usually killed them if a shift was missed. We ran GK and Lunati cams that had stock lift and duration.... 7" tires and they were checked for width. As they grew you had to cut them or use a cheese grater. M&H's were usually on stick cars and when Firestone came out with their "gumby" tires a lot of automatics used those......They were very soft and the hot rubbber from a new "trick" technique known as a stationary burnout.....burned the heck out of my ankles as I held the car....... |

Giving credit to SE and Jim, one of the outstanding performances I remember was at the winter series race in Lake Charles ('85 or '86) where they ran 10.80s in D. I believe it was the red car. I was in B there and could only run a few hundredths quicker. We were all bad back then!! ;) |

Just talked to Verne. I needed him(with his computer memory) to confirm my memory of of that race. We set the record at 11.27 and backed it up with an 11.31, in fact I have the record certificate to prove it. I remember that was a fun time to race because you had a bunch of guys in your class and all were friends and trying to out perform the other. Of all the things I miss about racing that is the thing I miss the most. Verne doesn't remember the 11.19 run but I wouldn't argue with you since most days now I can't remember what I had for lunch yesterday. You LOOONG time Buddy; S.E. |
