Tony Pizzi in 1970 with a 427 COPO Camaro was the first Jr. Stocker. JimWaldo may have been the first after Stock was reinstituted.

Kent Hanley with his 302 don't remember year thing it was late 80's.

Kent had the first small block stocker to run a 10.
I think Dwight was right about Jim Waldo.

Dwight , I'm not sure. Were Tony's runs documented at a divisional?

This car ran 10.96 at the 71 Gatornationals:

I do belive Jim Waldo was the first 10-sec Stocker. I have a magazine article on this car at the shop somewhere.

First small block stick in the 10's, to my knowledge, was Kent Hanley in the early 1990's at the Dutch Classic at Maple Grove, as a D/S or E/S '67 Camaro 302.

First small block, automatic Stocker in the 10's, Mike Walter's F/SA Camaro 327, Atco NJ, April 1999.

Yeah, I think you're right. Mike may have been the first carbureted small block automatic in the 10's.

Re: Who was the first 10 sec. stick Stocker and

I know the 302 car was the first smallblock period to do it. I had the first sb auto car to do it at the 95 winternationals. I went 10.99 in E/SA with my 71 Duster 340. Within a few hundreths was also Gene Buell and Linda Myers, both with E/SA 340 cars.I believe Woodro Josey did it a few months later also. Ken Etter

I believe I was the 1st small block stocker in the 10's. I went a few 90s in the fall of 1990 then went as quick as a 10.86 at 122.5 in the spring of 91 ( as per an old National Dragster of April 11,1991). Hopes this helps I was running D/S with my 67 302 Z-28 Camaro

Under todays rules, you could have put that car in C and done it many years sooner im sure.

That is a great car I bought it in high school when it was a 6 cylinder 3 on the tree. Needless to say a lot of blood, sweat, money and help from lots of friends went into that car.

The 10 sec runs for Tony's car was in an article in SS&DI in Feb. '71, IIRC. There were pictures of the time slips from ATCO at the divisional race in the Fall of 1970. That article was the inspiration for my changing my '67 Camaro from a Z28 to a 396.

The first iteration of Kent's 302 was in that car and ran 11.19@121 in 1982. Kent bought it in 1985 and he did much better with it than I did.

Yea but Dwight when you put that BB in your car that put you in a whole new ball game with some pretty strong players. So who had the baddest C&D car in the country back then??

Ken: I believe you are correct that you had the first small block auto in the 10's. I was there and watched your pass! I was then racing and still run a 340 car, so I watched everybody pretty close in mid 90's and never heard of another car going that fast at either a divisional or National event!! PS: I recall numerous articles and ads that stated Jim Waldo had first stocker in 10's although I didn't observe that run myself...........................By the way if it wasn't for Al and Ken Etters help we would have quit Stock Eliminator after the first few races.:D Irving Family Racing:

I was at that race! My partner and I, with Ray Allen driving, set the H/S record that weekend. Sept. 1970 Atco. I don't recall anything about Tony Pizzi though from the race.

I do recall Don Nicholson set the Pro Stock record at 9.60 and he got on the scales directly in front of us.

It Was some fuzz when Bobby D ran first in the 9's at mission that Waldo did his first in the 10's almost exactly 20 years before(i think) or something That is i guess under current(evolving) rules....what was different with the car Mark Y talk about and the rules back then?

Dwight's correct, my Dad made the first 10 second Stock Eliminator run at Seattle on May 6, 1978. He went 10.95 at 124.82 to set the A/S national record.

Interestingly, it was exactly 23 years to the day (May 6, 2001) that Bobby DeArmond ran the first 9 second run at Mission.

There were a few differences. I don't remember all of them but I'm sure that someone does. Among the ones that I recall:

1. Tires - 7" in 1971 v. 9" in 1978
2. Pistons - Unrestricted on weight and valve relief in 1971 v. factory piston in 1978
3. Allowable overbore - .060 in 1971 v. .030? in 1978 (things were changing pretty fast in '78. I'm not sure on the overbore rule at that point in time.

What else am I forgetting?

What about weight brakes and cars that were allowed..
unrestricted on valve relief? in that case what about cams?

Hey Dwight, If I remember correctly it was 1983 Green Valley you blasted doun the track with a 11.30 something for the record, only to give it up to S.E. & Kuntz when they made their run behind you a blistering 11.27. Re: Who was the first 10 sec. stick Stocker and

I believe that the camshaft rules would have been roughly the same for a Stocker in 1971 as in 1978. Stock lift, duration, and overlap specs were enforced in both instances.

The piston in 1971 would have been required to have only the reliefs placed where they were needed for valve/piston clearance and they would have been no deeper than required for actual valve clearance. In 1978 the piston top would have been required to conform to the factory configuration.

I don't have a '71 Rulebook and I don't know what horsepower ratings were established in either instance. The Corvette appears to me to have been a '66 while Jim's car was a '67 Fairlane, I believe. The Corvette (if it was a '66) would have been a 427 with a single Holley. Jim's car might have been either a single or dual quad motor. It seems to me that he ran it both ways at various times but most commonly with a single carburetor.

see that it has a 7.49 factor at 425hp, and would have been exluded until AA come along..Just trying to establish why no 10 runs seem to be made between 71 and 78..

Re: Who was the first 10 sec. stick Stocker and

Old stock vs new stock...........A cars minimum weight was the shipping weight back in the old days. No driver weight was accounted for. You were allowed 5 gals of gas and if you were light you could add a spare.
If you had a driver that was light, you had an edge.

Pistons......rings could be moved up and you could run any rings. Forgedtrues were pretty popular......

Valve springs had to check at stock pressures and we usually killed them if a shift was missed.

We ran GK and Lunati cams that had stock lift and duration....

7" tires and they were checked for width. As they grew you had to cut them or use a cheese grater.

M&H's were usually on stick cars and when Firestone came out with their "gumby" tires a lot of automatics used those......They were very soft and the hot rubbber from a new "trick" technique known as a stationary burnout.....burned the heck out of my ankles as I held the car.......

Thanks for the facts Gary.. Sometimes tough for West Coasters to get any recognition. Also interesting that it took so long for a 1 second increase and now guys almost do it at will. Something stock must have gone out of stock. JMO!

With all due respect to Jim and family, it is factually incorrect to say he was the first Stock Eliminator car in the 10's.

He was the first 8 lb, 9 inch tire, modern configuration Stocker in the 10's.

1971 would have been the last year for the 7 inch tire deal and aftermarket pistons, deep oil pans, etc. . The "NEW" stock eliminator began in 72. I think it was 74 or 75 brfore they were allowed headers again and real 9 inch slicks instead of those DOT slicks.

Jeff, the problem with your memory is that the Camaro was the one that got torn down, SE didn't back up his run. So the Camaro got the record. That was also the race where I ran the 11.19@121 on Sunday morning after setting the record at 11.32@119 on Saturday. I think I may have bought fresh gas for the Camaro to get ready for that race.

Giving credit to SE and Jim, one of the outstanding performances I remember was at the winter series race in Lake Charles ('85 or '86) where they ran 10.80s in D. I believe it was the red car. I was in B there and could only run a few hundredths quicker.

We were all bad back then!! ;)

Just talked to Verne. I needed him(with his computer memory) to confirm my memory of of that race. We set the record at 11.27 and backed it up with an 11.31, in fact I have the record certificate to prove it.
I remember that was a fun time to race because you had a bunch of guys in your class and all were friends and trying to out perform the other. Of all the things I miss about racing that is the thing I miss the most.
Verne doesn't remember the 11.19 run but I wouldn't argue with you since most days
now I can't remember what I had for lunch yesterday.
