Shop air compressor & PORTABLE generator

Seeking information, suggestions and feedback regarding the purchasing of an upright, air compressor for casual(non commercial)shop use.
Also same type of info regarding a portable generator for at track use, primarily battery charger, small air compressor, ect.
Need suggestions for a generator that is very light and easy to carry!-thank you in advance for all your help.

Compressor - Sears, Lowes or Home Depot.

Small Generator - Honda 2000i, I like mine, it weights about 34 lbs
and is easy to carry around. There is also a smaller honda that
should be fine for running a battery charger. And Honda's are
quiet.

Get the biggest compressor you can afford and I agree on the Honda but they are spendy for their size. You can find cheaper but probably not quieter.

Philip is correct about the Honda 2000i. I have two that I hook-up in conjunction. Extremely quiet. I've had mine for two racing seasons with no problems whatsoever.

I purchased my Honda EU2000i online from Northern Tool Co
http://honda.northerntool.com/category/generators.
Or call them toll-free @ 800-221-0516
Best prices on Honda generators, and the shipping was free!

I bought a Devilbiss, 5hp, 60 gal compressor from Lowes about 17-18 years ago for the garage. Still works fine to this day. I have the Honda 3000i generator and love it. It is a 2 person generator to move around. The 2000i is the light weight version.

My 2 cents.

Generator - Honda, if you want to save a few bucks look at the Northstar with a Honda engine.

Air compressor - Sears 30 gallon, 120 volt. If you have 220 and 3-phase wiring go that route. Pop for a 2-stage compressor if funds allow.

I'll echo this. Check Craigs List. I stumbled across a guy in Cinncinati, Ohio that handled Campbell Hausfeld seconds, reconditioned air compressors. I got a 5hp, twin stage 80 gallon compressor for $575.00. Air is no longer a problem around the shop.

No matter what, stay away from oil less air compressors!!! They will drive you and everyone else around you nuts! Loud and irritating. Get the biggest air compressor you can afford.

X2 on the oil less. Had to put mine outside and plumb thru the wall. Even with the doors closed it's loud. I feel for my neighbors.

Re: Shop air compressor & PORTABLE generator

I bought this little 5.5 gallon compressor from Lowes for about $100. It usually keeps us and everyone around us full of air (some say hot air).

One thing to remember with Lowes. They usually put a 10% coupon in the change of address envelopes at the post office. So I just stop by there and pick up one when I am going to buy something at Lowes. Has saved me many dollars.

Good tip.

OK I did not read the whole message. This is the one I use for the trailer. Would not be big enough for the shop. But for light work at the race track it can't be beat. I have ran tools off of it though. But just short bursts. Can not keep up with a large demand.

Lowes-Home Depot-Menards -sears all have good quality upright compressors--Try to run the air intake into another room or outside if at all possible really cuts down on the noise----I have some free 20% off coupons for Harbor Freight if you want to go that way too. they too sell big and small compressors--- Just remember to get the BIGGEST compressor(shop) that you can its a once in a lifetime buy sorta like a trailer---you can always buy too small a trailer but you almost never buy too big a trailer---just my thoughts--Comp 387

Another vote for the Honda EU2000i. I've had one for 5+ years, it works really well. Just make sure to drain the carburetor if it's going to be sitting for any length of time (Honda includes a drain valve on the carb, makes it nice and easy to drain it into a clean cup and pour it right back into the tank). When I start using my big trailer again (hauling 2 cars) I plan to replace the 6kW generator with a second Honda EU2000i, and get the parallel kit (will probably make my own kit). Two of them are about 1/3 of the weight of my 6kW generator, and much more fuel efficient.

For track use I have a 1.5 hp air compressor from Harbor Freight (cheapo). The Honda runs it okay as long as it has been powered up recently at home (to unstick things and get the lubrication circulated).

Yamaha also makes a nice quiet generator that is equal to the Honda.I've had one for a few years and it's some of the best money I've spent.Works great and is quiet.

Re: Shop air compressor & PORTABLE generator

I use a Coleman PM0431802 Powermate Pulse 1800 Generator, as it has a built-in 12V Battery Charger so that is one more thing I don't have to load up in my trailer..... I know it's not a Honda, but it does everything I need to do on race day.. and costs much less
