Re: NEW NHRA enviorenmental policy READ IT
Recognizing the need to further protect the environment at racing venues, NHRA has announced a new environmental management policy for all NHRA events and/or facilities, effective at all NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series events beginning with the NHRA Gatornationals, March 11-14.
The program involves three primary rules that must be followed regarding the use, possession and disposal of regulated waste. First and foremost, each participant must participate online in a mandatory training session regarding environmental uses as they relate to racing. The training presentation will be available on the National Event Registration website after logging into their account. Second, no halogenated or chlorinated brake cleaners may be used at NHRA events or facilities. And, finally, the responsibility of compliance with Federal, State and Local regulations belongs to the participant. NHRA will post information provided by tracks on the national registration website when provided by the national event facilities. NHRA intends to work with government entities, agencies and tracks to monitor and enforce the new environmental management program. Penalties, for non-compliance, will be assessed by NHRA, with a minimum $1,000 fine imposed for any violation. The entire environmental management responsibility program as well as the training session will be posted on the registration website. When competitors log into their account, they will be required to complete the training and sign the agreement before they can complete the registration process. Does this include the installation of rectal pollution scrubbers to be installed on the inhabitants of the Glendora HQs? |

Re: NEW NHRA enviorenmental policy READ IT
NHRA is just doing this to cover their *****. And I do mean $$$$$.
The biggest problem is in the Pro Pits anyway. Almost everything they use in the way of liquids is hazardous materials. All this is about covering NHRA and putting any responsibility on to the racers themselves. It is all about the money as always with NHRA. My 2 Cents |
Re: NEW NHRA enviorenmental policy READ IT
Sooooo, no more dumping the black tank before leaving the track? Damn.

Re: NEW NHRA enviorenmental policy READ IT

Re: NEW NHRA enviorenmental policy READ IT
I just came back in from my COLD shop after inspecting my brake cleaner cans and carb cleaner cans and what is printed on them.
I have 3 different brands of brake cleaner and all say Contains No Chlorinated Hydrocarbons. The one brand of carb cleaner says the same. One of the brake cleaners did say not for use in California but not the reason why. I retired from the Natural Gas Industry and before I retired in 2000 we stopped using and could not even buy without a permit the Chlorinated Cleaners or Solvents. Unless someone has some really old stuff I am not sure you can even buy it anymore at a parts store. It is for industrial use by permit only. Just My 2 Cents |

Re: NEW NHRA enviorenmental policy READ IT
First, why would NHRA asess any fines when this is an environmental issue, wouyldn't the EPA be asessing fines? Second being in the Auto industry I can't even remember when everything switched to non chlorinated but it's been a while. As bad as I hate to say it looks like just another $ generator for the NHRA, with the guise of being eco police. If their that worried about the environment find some different fuel for their fuel cars that doesn't leave a giant yellow cloud at the starting line. I doubt that stuffs good for ya. Joe

Re: NEW NHRA enviorenmental policy READ IT
I think there had better be some legal opinions on this! I know this! from prior experance..........by you noting, signing, or confirming that you have been trained, or educated in any form...........you are setting yourself up for being busted..........It's the same as admiting that you know better and you should not have done it...........
My previous employer used to use the same tactics. bust ya, then whip out the signed form that you have been trained...........Your fired. Ok Sportsman commitee go to work on this. |
Re: NEW NHRA enviorenmental policy READ IT
I am on vacation and stopped by a auto parts store this afternoon to pick up a tail light bulb for the car. While I was there I took a look at some cans of brake clean they had displayed on the counter. They had Brakeclean brand brake cleaner in both a Red and Green cans. The reds did not say anything but the greens in large lettering had "Non Clorinated" on them. So I guess the green cans are ok now but the red is not? Wife was waiting in the car so I did not have time to check carb cleaners out.. I know O'riellys Auto parts in IL just had to take a bunch of stuff off the shelves including thier own house brand of brake cleaner. Gotta love the epa.

Re: NEW NHRA enviorenmental policy READ IT
I did watch the video and at the end is where NHRA has us agree and sign off on it or FORGET entering a race.
The Gators will be interesting as racers are already entered. |
Re: NEW NHRA enviorenmental policy READ IT
Professional Strength without Ozone Depleters
I have a can here says it's non-chlorinated, however lower down on the can. NOTE: As of January 1, 2009, this product, due to its volatile organic compound content, is prohibited for sale and use in the following states: CA, CT, DE, IL, MA, MD, MI, NH, NJ, NY, OH, PA, DC and northern VA. Other Locales may also prohibit its sale or use. Check local and state regulations. Will there be more to it? Ernie |
Re: NEW NHRA enviorenmental policy READ IT
That stuff is a real deal. We use differnet part cleaners that can be recycled, the brake cleaner is not in spray cans, but it's an echo friendly, A few years back there was a form that came with your credentials that had the competitor sign as a 'generator' of waste. That went away. I doubt if this is a big deal, but as suggested the committee whould ask. I will therefore ask Wednesday. Tomorrow is Mardi Gras. Not a day to ask for anything but beer, burgers, beads, and other trinkets.

Re: NEW NHRA enviorenmental policy READ IT
So, today I was toolin' eastbound on I10 on my way to Phoenix when it hit me: Oh snap! I forgot to enter the race! In a panic I grab my phone to check the time hoping it wasn't 1PM yet. My phone said it was 12:20 and I thought "whew, plenty of time." So I took the next exit and parked along side the entrance ramp. I go to the trailer and get the laptop out and log on to the registration site and bam there it is:
"Mandatory Training Video" There's no close button, no pause button, no remind me later button. I have to sit through the training video before I can enter the event. It's about 12:30 at this point. After 5 minutes I'm thinking "I hope this video isn't too long." After 10 minutes steam is starting to come out my ears. What if this video is 30 minutes long? I'm screwed then. Luckily the video ended after about 15 minutes and I was able to register. If you are going to enter a national event and think it might be close if you get in or not I would advise that you log on at least 30 minutes before the grade change so you can get the training video out of the way. I wonder if there were any people who went to unregister from the event at the last minute and didn't make it because of the video. -Toby |
Re: NEW NHRA enviorenmental policy READ IT
The brake cleaner sold at Wal-Mart is "Non-Chlorinated" and listed for sale and use in CA. The NHRA Video listed our oil as "non-hazardous". Wonder where this all got started....... Most of our safety regs are from someones unfortunate accident. Probably someone from the EPA stood in the fuel pits and wondered why his eyes were burning.

Get your pop corn ready, I just let it run, lol
Question is All this brake clean i got from Valvoline any good for at the track ???? |
Re: NEW NHRA enviorenmental policy READ IT
Maybe they can hire Al Gore as the competition director. I'm sure all that smoke and nitro methane is causing global warming. How about cats on the hemi cars, hell they already have the ox sensors. I've heard that clutchless trannys cause the hole in the ozone to expand or was it the hole in your wallet to expand. I'm confused, lets have another secret ballot.
|
Re: NEW NHRA enviorenmental policy READ IT
Tony, we will have to find a copy of the invisible procedures manual in order to have any more secret ballots.

Re: NEW NHRA enviorenmental policy READ IT
I see NHRA also has a new rule regarding dumping your RV tanks in. make that on, the pits. About time. Some people are real scum to think the other racers appreciate their grey water being dumped before they roll on home!

So using that logic.... say you drive over to my house, you engine kicks a rod out dumping oil and you don't clean it up according to EPA standards..So I fine you $1000 right? Hey I'm the property owner. Yeah sounds silly doesn't it? Joe

What about the fines for oil downs by the pro cars? Legally NHRA can do almost anything it darn well pleases. You agree to that when you join NHRA and/or enter an event. Didn't you read the rule book or the entry forms? It's called CYOA. |

In a sense that is correct. In that situation, if I didn't do a proper cleanup, you could take me to civil court an sue me for the cleanup costs, because the EPA would hold you responsible. |
Re: NEW NHRA enviorenmental policy READ IT
I watched the training video, it took about 15 minutes. Mostly common sense issues, which unfortunately some guys don't seem to have or care. I was at a Div. 3 race last year at Stanton, Mich. and I suspected that my pit neighbor dumped his tank in his RV early in the morning. I didn't see him do it, but I know is that all of the sudden it smelled like *&%$ and I did see dripping coming from the outlet. I asked him, "did you just dump your tank?" He told me no, and said that I was just smelling the local farm fields. It just happened to smell like *&%$ right next to my pit spot, which was directly next to his drain. Proves that some guys never learn or care.

Re: NEW NHRA enviorenmental policy READ IT
You guys can bicker all you want but here's the bottom line:
NHRA penalty: $1000 EPA penalty: Felony conviction Which would you rather have again? |
Re: NEW NHRA enviorenmental policy READ IT
Yes Charlie I agree we all agree by signing most any NHRA form that we agree to abide by their rules and regulations. That's fine with me, my gander gets up when I'm told to do things that any racer with common sense would do anyway. Maybe it's not so much what they said as HOW they said it. In my home state every body knows you can't drink and drive or drive without your seatbelt on, fines, jail, no lic. ect. However that doesn't stop the state from producing and airing commercials stating the obvious, waste of money and effort. No matter how I feel about it I'll still follow the rules as they're put to us the racers I guess I was unaware this was such a problem with the Sportsman racers. I remember back before they had the generator exhaust rules, if 1 of my neighbors were fogging me out I'd just ask them to move it...I never had anyone say NO, just common courtesy. Lets just all hope they never get to fine any Sportsman racer in the first place. Joe

Re: NEW NHRA enviorenmental policy READ IT
Good point.
Funny thing is people DONT care, I do. We have Well and Septic...this stuff all goes round cycle. I cleaned out my Garage and Basement about 10 years ago (maybe 14) The house was my Granparents, and well nothing needed moved, I wanted to get rid of "nasties" I came up with about 10 gallons DDT, about another 20 of each malathion and parithion, as well as probably 50 gallons other solvents and such that have been long since banned for over counter sale (carbon tet, etc) I called the FD as they have a "Pickup" I was told its only once a year.....Id have to hang on to it till then. I said "Thats alright Ill just dump it in the leech bed" They said YOU CANT DO THAT !!!! (I wasnt serious sheesh) and my Smart *** answer to their once yearly pickup was "Sure , Ive got 16 acres here noone will see" Less than 7 minutes later as I was moving it all back into the Garage to "Wait" for their time of the year, a FD truck and Hazmat truck showed up to pick it up. I think they expected to see me dumping it.....lol.... But I got it outta there..... They were flustered until they figured out I wasnt really serious about dumping it. Then the guy gave me a wink and said, I guess you figured out how to get door to door service :) Quote:

Re: NEW NHRA enviorenmental policy READ IT
Someone on the 90s section asked if Valvoline/Pyroil brake cleaner is non chlorinated.
Their website seems to show two types: Here's one listing: Brake Cleaner/Degreaser No VOC 15 Oz PYROIL NVOC15 Brake Cleaner/Degreaser Non Chlorinated No VOC Container Size 15 Oz. Clear Can Transparent Boiling Point 133 F 0.1 Specific Gravity Dissolves .... Here's the other one, says it contains chloronated solvents. Instantly removes brake fluid, grease, oil and brake dust •Removes brake fluid, grease, oil and brake dust instantly •Flushes oil, dirt and carbon from electric motors •Contains no petroleum solvents •Non-flammable and non-conductive •Leaves no residue •Contains a mixture of chlorinated solvents to control evaporation rate •Powerful aerosol assists cleaning action |
Re: NEW NHRA enviorenmental policy READ IT
I didn't know NHRA has the right to impose fines on anyone. I'm pretty sure that is restricted to government agencies. They can charge you but if you don't want to pay I doubt they would be able to collect.

Re: NEW NHRA enviorenmental policy READ IT
Ask Don Schumaker (SP) about his $100,000.00 fine over nitro...and he paid it. NHRA can do it and has done it.
