All the talk about rules.....
Do we follow them?....... No
I attended 3 national events last year and all three times the person next to me did not have a stack for their generator exhaust. BB I'll sign any waiver you want just make people have a frickin stack on their generator exhaust so I do not have to breath it all weekend. |
Re: All the talk about rules.....
Barney thats why I bring a fan to blow it back under there motorhome.

Re: All the talk about rules.....
Park out in the weeds with us S/ST guys , we all have stacks (well most of us do)
|
Re: All the talk about rules.....
I don't have a stack on my generator!
It's a lightweight Honda EU2000i, and I run it on the roof of my camper! Its exhaust is higher than the stacks next to me! |
Re: All the talk about rules.....
only motorhomes and trailers with permanetly mounted gens need a stack any portable units do not---be a prick report him to pit control ----they'll tell him to shut it off or fix it---Comp387

Re: All the talk about rules.....
How about the guys with those old rattle trap gens that leave them on all night.
Admittedly I leave my 1000W Honda on till midnight. If anyone is pitted next to me I ask if they are bothered by the noise and I move it and shield it from them.Just common courtesy. |
Re: All the talk about rules.....
BB, Last year at Joliet a friend of ours notified pit control. They went off on the guy for no stack and the guy had to shut his gen set off untill he had one. This was after everyone from NHRA had left the track. The NHRA official called Joliet security that evening and had him shut it off. The stacks are simple to make. I guess some of these guys with the 100+ thousand dollar rigs cant afford them.
I for one will say something if they dont have one. |
Re: All the talk about rules.....
Here is my deal, I don't want to be the "prick" you had to park beside for 4 or 5 days. So What I am going to do this year is I am going to buy one from camping world like mine and if you don't have one you can buy the one I have. (for what I paid for it) and if you do not want to do that I will then go to NHRA and get an offical.
I just want to race and have fun but I will not smell deisel generator fumes again this year because we are then no longer having fun. BB I am not talking about portable ones I am talking about the ones there are rules for. BB2 This is about as professional and fair as I can be. |
Re: All the talk about rules.....
BB, I agree 100% with you as I always get a neighbor with no stack or some POS that would wake the dead which of course he must run all nite. Where has the common courtesy gone? I don't have the finest stuff but I do try to be considerate of my neighbors, a quick "is this bothering you" goes a long way. Joe

Re: All the talk about rules.....
dont bother with track security ask the guy to fix it if he does not just wait till later then cut the spark plug wire that will help
|
Re: All the talk about rules.....
Last year at two races I had the same (well known racer) pit next to me in his gazillion dollar toter / stacker and on both occasions his diesel genset blew directly at my trailer door (constantly) for three days straight
I finally approached him and asked if he had a stack for it and he said he did, but it was a pain to install..... Just because you have a half a million dollar rig doesn't necessarily mean you have class ;) Never again ;) |
Re: All the talk about rules.....
You could not have said it any better.
|
Re: All the talk about rules.....
I too have experienced this issue.
If they can afford the $250-500K rig at least go to Home Depot and build one for $18 bucks like I did. Not quite as bad as one guy saving 30 spots at Norwark though!!!!!! don't get me started.......... |
Re: All the talk about rules.....
At Norwalk National, I had to move. An Alarm Stocker started his non vented 2 dollar generator, and left for the hotel! Security would not let me turn it off or shut it off themselves. No vent, wide open, noise maker, but hey, they were at the hotel, no problem.
I have to be honest, this year I wont ask, I'll shut it off. |
Re: All the talk about rules.....
Play the game, Play by the Rules, We all must comply.
Jeff, cut the plug wires next time ! I'll help you, miss you down here in sunny Fla. |
Re: All the talk about rules.....
I agree, unfortunatley Im one of those cheap sob's with a 20 year old genset, 14 hp kohler iron tank.....
runs like new, smells like saudia arabia.... What fo I need to do to be "kosher" as far as a stack goes.... Ill have to change my muffler to run one.... Quote:

Re: All the talk about rules.....
I bought one of the really quiet Honda EU gens (to replace a real noise-maker) just because I didn't want to be a dick to my neighbors. Everyone says things like "is it on"? It's so quiet, it's great.
But I want to add a stack. It's on a pullout drawer, so I could fit some kind of stack, but... How do I do that for a machine that is so self-contained? Where does the intake of the stack go? |
Re: All the talk about rules.....
I also use a 3000 honda and built a stack for it using a 3" piece of plastic pipe and a heating duct outlet flange. I hang the flange on the handle just below the exhaust outlet to collect the exhaust and it funnels into a 90 degree L then into the 3" plastic running up to the top of the trailer with a hang on bracket to keep it there. It works pretty well and has not affected the operation of the generator. The plastic pipe gets a little hot on hot days but has not discolored at all and held up for two years now. It seems to meet the rules for a stack and seems to keep everyone happy who I have parked next to so far. I always ask how it is working for the neighbor and have yet to have any complaints. Maybe they are just being nice but the exhaust is the only way they seem to know it is running it is so quiet.
Hope that helps. |
Re: All the talk about rules.....
Helps a ton. Thanks!

Re: All the talk about rules.....
Hey Chuck, hope to see everyone in Atlanta. I had to stay home and shovel snow?????????? I was packed and leaving, my wife said, (Have you seen the weather? You should leave tonight.) But who listens to their wife (the guy with no beer and a loud generator). So everyone, listen to your wife, drink beer, get a smoke stack, play nice, and dont dump your oil on the ground!

I did make one mistake in the above posting and realized it when I went to take the pictures today and that was in the size of the plastic pipe. I used 4" pipe and not 3". Sorry but I was working off of memory and I am old and feeling it some days. The flange is a heating duct from Lowes along with a 4X6 reducer then the 4" plastic pipe. I did rivet the hanger at the top of the trailer to the stainless hose clamp at the top. If you do not the heating and cooling of the plastic pipe the bracket will come loose and the pipe will fall off. I had this problem once before installing the rivet. |

would say if that tin was attached to the gen it would sound like a skeleton dancing on a tin roof. It's a neat solution though.Nice engineering. |

The bottom of the box has a piece of alum sheet metal pop riveted to the bottom that hangs over the handle on the generator. If you look at the bottom picture from the side you can see the lip that hangs down. The box itself has a gap of a half of an inch or so all around and pulls a little cool air in as the generator runs. The generator hardly moves even when running and has worked well for me for the two years I have run it. The only problem I have had with it is the top bracket came loose as I mentioned in the post but a pop rivet to the stainless hose clamp fixed that. Thanks for the comments on the engineering. Being retired I have time to tinker sometimes and this project was one of those times. |
