NHRA Sportsman Racer Advisory Council "HAZMAT" ?????
 

OK new members, What is your take on what NHRA is doing to all racers concering the "HAZMAT" deal. Please for at least the first 20 or so responses let it the members from each division.

My take on the hazmat deal is NHRA is protecting their *** and shifting liablity to the racers. In the eyes of a property owner and business operator it's probably not a bad idea. Do I like it? No. I think it sucks. Is there anything I or any other member can do about it ? Stay home a be miserable.
It appears from what I have read so far that only Gainesville and Atlanta is totally effected so far. Something must have triggered this deal and they are afraid of getting a big fine or getting shut down. I can tell you from experience they don't want the EPA or any related agency on there property. They will find a problem before they leave no matter how clean it is. Just my take on the deal.

Mike I am shocked that no one replied on this. What good is the council if noboby want's to discuss this.

I don't care for it either....but its not surprising....at my business the city comes in and checks for all kinds of materials once a year....and my insurance company does too...

I like to use the good brake clean like everybody else....but how much do we really use at the track....so not a big deal....

Mike is right. There was something that just didn't smell right at Gainesville. When you entered the track they handed you a three page pamphlet that contained one page of rules and regs on oil etc. One page that you MUST sign saying you had read and agree to the rules and fines in order to compete. And one advertisement page of HazMat materials for sale by a new sponsor company. No doubt NHRA gets a cut from the sales. Prices were huge for disposal and you had a $45 "membership" fee on top of it all. Jim

Point being is that you can carry 5 qts of oil into track but if you change your oil at the track you can not put the used oil in qt. bottles the new oil was in. ????????????????

Especially when the local auto parts takes used oil for free. There's certainly something stinky going on here. :confused: What disturbs me most is it's Florida. What else is lurking and who is profiting from it?

Who brings barrels of solvent to the races? Who rebuilds their engines after every run. Also, who dumps the most oil and fuel on the track? We all know the answers. The couple of cans of brake clean we carry and an oil change for a class run doesn't amount to much does it? Again it's made to look like the sportsman are making a big mess at the track. We can all do a better job of cleaning up our pit area before we leave but I have never seen any sportsman mess to compare to what most pros leave behind. We always carry a container for used oil and such since we burn waste oil at our shop. We have gone through 600+ gals so far this season. So look us up if you need to get rid of some.

No doubt that all NHRA scantioned tracks will implement this and do it quickly.

Mike and Rock. Thanks for responsible replies. Here's another way to look at it. If the EPA gets involved it will get expensive. If any of our businesses got a visit and (fined) from the EPA about improper material in our trash we would monitor our trash better to make sure we don't have to pay for someone else disposing of things in our trash. All of us can do a better job of keeping our area clean. If we all would only worry about our small area then the big picture would take care of itself. After watching the NHRA power point, I realize that it is a good idea to puncture a hole in my empty aerosol cans. That way they don't blow up in someone elses face. We can't change the policy just do our part to CYA.

I was "hazwopper" qualified at work. And if I can remember right. You only have to label cans when there is someone else that may mistake the fluid for something else.
If I am the only one changing my oil I can put it in anything I want, and it does not have to be labeled. I was going to play with the guy at the gate and ask if he went to the 8 hour, 40 hour, or 80 hour course. And then show him the credentials I carried in my wallet.
But I decided not to and on more thought I leave my credentials home now. Don't want to wear a target, if I spilled a drop or 2.

Mr Brannon, Im from D7 #746. I was wondering after making some reply's on other threads about this subject if its possible we can get some clear insite as to how this is going to be implemented at the track? I have read what some guy's from Florida had to do and sign at the track and there thoughts. My question to you is as a SRAC member have you guy's been informed or was anyone from the SRAC involved when this was implemented? Thank you.

Easy Brannon, down boy. I sent an email for clarification on some points especially about taking it with you when you leave. Easy, down, easy. Nothing in their deal is anything new. Would be nice to know what triggered it. If I don't get an answer by Friday, I will try to call somebody for more info.

Good point. 'Nothing in their deal is anything new.' Just letting you know they are enforcing it. If anything goes wrong, they have educated you (video at registration) on proper protocol.We just need to properly dispose of waste.

What triggered it? Maybe it was a disgruntled employee on a fuel team blew the whistle. Or maybe a tree hugger was sipping some herbal tea while watching a national event on tv and saw something in the background while the camera was following around John Force back in his pits. Thats another good reason to show some sportsman racing on Sunday instead of a loud mouth icon eating up airtime.

At the first race in Bradenton, everyone was asked to take thier used oil with them and not dump it anywhere on premis. There were also no collection containers available...

Kinda funny how now at NHRA owned tracks you are required to pay a disposal fee, instead of just allowed to take the used oil with you... We all know the Alky cars are the only "Sportsman" racers who "Should" be affected by this, but leave it to NHRA to find yet another way of getting a few more $$$ from every racer in attentdance...

Jeff my man, I am not pushing the panic button. Here is my intake on this. Change your oil at the track, put back in the bottles that your new oil came out .. When you leave track just DUMP back into engine. Drain when you get home. Still cheaper than paying you know WHO. What can they say on that?
