M/t radial problem
I have a set of the 12.25 w radials with maybe 25 passes and all of a sudden car is way unstable on top end, put old bias plys back on and car is perfect. What gives??

Re: M/t radial problem
TOO FAST?
Gotta say I am plesantly surprised especially after the 3 tenth chop. These tires S U C K! ole worn out bias ply hoosiers way more stable on top end. |
Re: M/t radial problem
Have you talked with Carl Robinson @ M/T?

Bill
I dont know anyone at M/T, Is Carl in so/cal? Not a balance problem as car is smooth, feels like running on flats with 20 psi. |
Re: M/t radial problem
One thing I have found about radials, they tend to do that if the wheels aren't wide enough.
Mine totally stopped doing that after I learned to use wheels wider than the tread area of the tires. I put my 9" radials on 10" wheels, and my 10.5" on 12" wheels. Made a whole new car out of mine. I can run more air, it hooks harder and no more wobble. |
Re: M/t radial problem
I've run these tires on my S/Stocker for several years with great sucsess . At first I ran them with a 12" rim and had some wobble . Since going with a 14" rim I run approx 18lbs of tire pressure and I do have a sway bar My truck is absolutley stable no shake . Also about 8-10th quicker and have consistantley put over a hundred runs on them . As in any radial tire make sure all suspinsion is tight .

Re: M/t radial problem
I agree the wheel width does seem to have a distinct effect on these tires, wider wheel is preferrable. Joe

Re: M/t radial problem
Dennis,
Make sure your front end is tight as well. I found in my old car (1st gen Camaro) that we needed to redo the front end. Installed a slightly larger OD center link. Converted the factory type tie rod ends to chrome moly round tube with heim ends. As the others have noted, sway bar or anti-roll will help on the rear and 14" rims. Another thing to note as well is how the track is prepared. I experienced on marginal tracks I could not use the radials. When it came to National Event prepped type tracks or first class type facilities, I did not have an issue as much as before. I still had wobble but it was manageable. FWIW Ronnie, Jr. |
Re: M/t radial problem
Rear wheels are 14 wide. Front end has all new parts from wheel to wheel. Rear is 4 link with diagonal link and koni double adjustables. I think I just have a junk set . The car drives like a dream with the bias plys. If the radial m/t are so sensative I think some phoenix or hoosier radials are in my future. But I will call m/t first and see what they say.

Re: M/t radial problem
Dennis, I have heard of someone wrecking a car due to "radial wobble". Most say it's cured by stiffening the shocks.
My Hoosiers did it at 16 PSI but not at 12 PSI. Never did it once with the bias ply. |
Re: M/t radial problem
I had no idea this was such a common problem. I did stiffen the rear shocks a bunch and it helped enough I could get a full pass but was still a white knuckler. I have the front end way loose with all the usual weight transfer tricks and am thinking that may be half the problem. My car has not got a bunch of power so maybe a lot of transfer wont be needed to keep it happy. Maybe a set of stock coils instead of the moroso springs?? I took off the 90/10 shocks and tryed some 50/50 and made no difference at all.
Thanks for the help. |
Re: M/t radial problem
I found a cure for the problem........if it scares you bad enough the bias will be just fine
|
Re: M/t radial problem
My Hoosiers completely stopped that when I went to wheels an inch or so wider than the tread. Not one wobble since. They hook better with more air and MPH better also.
