4 wide Sportsman cars at Charlotte?

Like it says, will any of the Sportsman classes be running 4 wide at the upcoming Charlotte event? Or, just the Pro classes only? Anyone in the know....Thanks. WJ

From what I saw somewhere ( i cant remember where) that they are not running any sportsman 4 wide. They are assigning lanes by class so your always running out of the same lanes all weekend. So SS could run out of the right 2 lanes while SC could be running out of the left 2 lanes. I would think they will then have to pit you on the side you are running other wise it could be a long drive. There may be a problem for the guys running 2 classes out of different lanes.

Think before you type.

We laughed about it at the SRAC meeting last weekend....everybody would be flipping for the outside lanes....so you only had to look one way.....lol

That would be better than Top Fuel but other people would argue with that. Make that a all Chevy line up in all four lanes also!

I'm saying that it is impossible to race four cars in a break out.

I'll see you and Rock this weekend at No Problem.

OK, I get it now! Just a little slow sometimes.

No more comments from you Myronee! Jim

I hope they save the "FOUR WIDE" for the nitro circus. Watching a hard leaving stock or superstock car for the first 60 feet is like experiencing a fine wine, no way you can do it 4 at a time! Don Jackson

Gotta agree with you there my friend! Save the four wide stuff for the side show cars! Jim

The only way a 4 wide would be exciting in sportsman is four U/SA's.

The launch would appear almost heads up, they would be real close to each other all the way down, and plenty of time for the spectators to change their wagers as the race progresses, that is up to the 1/8th, then no more bets. Talk about a tight stipe MOV.

Ron, you the man!! I agree. I would rather watch the U/Stock nationals that the nitro circus!!! Class cars rule no matter how slow they are!! Don Jackson

Why not run 4-wide during qualifying?

It would take half as long to run a round of qualifying. The time saved might buy another qualifying run. I'd sure like the extra run if I could get it.

Go back to pairs for eliminations.

Jared, I thought the same thing, and that would be cool to watch...especially if the cars ran nearly the same et.'s? Or how about this, a Ford vs Chevy vs B.O.P. vs Mopar/AMC? I think that would be very cool...what does every one else think?

Not impossible, Greg....You know what happens when you tell the people running the show that something's "impossible".....I think qualifying the Sportsman cars 4 at a time would be a great idea, though.....WJ

Re: 4 wide Sportsman cars at Charlotte?

Isn't Pro prep different than Sportsman prep?

Run Pro's in 2 lanes and Sportsman in the other 2, each pair prepped accordingly.
That might defeat the purpose of the 4-wide circus or not save as much time. But at least there might be more side-by-side competition for both. Hmmm, actually that might save a little time anyway!

Re: 4 wide Sportsman cars at Charlotte?

What's going to happen if they have a oil-down on 1 lane of both tracks during a Pro 4 wide run? Twice the down time, or?? Should be interesting to see just how smoothly things run....hopefully it'll work out...WJ

Careful. The idiot execs in Glendora might enhance us into 4 wide and shorten the eliminator that way.

Ouch! That was cold! :D

4 wide would speed up qualifying. Wouldn't want to race that way.

Maybe it's just me, but I hate the idea of 4 wide, wether it's in pro or sportsman doesn't matter. Drag racing is two cars at a time in my book.

I also don't like how the fuel cars run only 1000 ft. Why not reduce the mixture of nitromethane instead and perhaps have 4- to 5000 hp instead of 8000+. I don't get it...

I believe the majority of racers here in the U.S. feel exactly the same way as you...BTW, approx. how many good 1/4 mi. tracks have you got operating now in Sweden? Thanks and best wishes. WJ

I'm not a racer yet so I'm not sure, but my guess is that none of 'em could compare with any of the NHRA tracks. Most of them are former air fields. The only purpose built drag strips I know of is Mantorp Park and the one in Malmö (which is only 1/8 mile). As for the number, I have no idea but I'd guess only aruond 5-10 drag strips in the country, 3 of which are permanent (Mantorp, Malmö and Sundsvall).

Regards, Patrik

Its amazing how someone like Jared comes up with something constructive like he did about doing it for time runs thus possible to get more time runs like everyone is bitching about and is all you guys do is change the subject. This is why there is a West Coast rule book LOL.... Good Idea Jared

We plan on going to Charlotte from Belle Rose next week. We have never been there, so how are the pits? Is it all paved, so we don't have to worry if it rains? Right now, it is looking like rain on Thurs. and Friday. I know it is way too far out to be very correct about the weather, but I would hate to waste my vacation sitting in the mud!

Re: 4 wide Sportsman cars at Charlotte?

I attended the '08 inaugural Carolinas Nationals event. Had beautiful weather....From a spectator's point, a 1st class facility....I had friends running SG that were pitted wayyy far out there, though....Everyone who has the chance should visit the place. I haven't been to Vegas as yet....people tell me it's the best, but Zmaxx is impressive, although from where my seating was, (pro pit left side 1000' mark, very high in grandstand) watching 4 wide racing simply would have been difficult to see all 4 make their full pass....still, both fan and racer friendly, for sure...Originally, one track was supposed to be used when the other had a oil-down during racing to prevent the delays, which seemed like a great idea. Now, it's changed to 4 wide- double track racing....Let's see if they fill the place up on Sat. and Sun. of the event....WJ

I saw the episode of Pinks when they ran four wide at Charlotte , and it was a lot less exciting to me that I thought it would be..

Seems like just a way to get three people eliminated faster... and after a couple of runs, it feels like it takes away the "mano a mano" or more politically correct, the "one on one" nature of drag racing...

I do agree about running qualifiyng four wide as it would speed things up...

I have been to both races and last year it rained early but dried on both Thursday and Friday. The pits to me are pretty good. The access to staging is on wide roads and most of the pit area has crusher run or hard grass. I think its pretty good, better than Indy in a lot of ways. On another note, I hope that they don't run Sportsman 4 wide. I won't be able to get the great wheelstands you guys do. Have a great shot of Cook & Hawk at Indy last year. Hope to see you all there.

I dont get why everything has to be speeded up though.

Another reason I don't like it is that it simply looks strange with two strips next to each other. Looks like something that only exists in video games.
