Re: Old photo album
The last few pictures are of the Rupp & Steffey Cougar. Maynard Rupp is my neighbor across the street. I'll bet he will get a charge out of these pictures.

Re: Old photo album
I remember the old LaPlace Dragway which if I remember correctly held the first NHRA Cajun Nationals before it was moved to State Capitol in the early eighties. We ran soem points meets there back around 1977 or so. This pics are all from a little before my time at LaPlace but I do remember seeing some of these cars at other tracks Cool pics and some good memories.

Re: Old photo album
Now that's when racing was fun, each car looked different and had it's own personality!
It was good to see Fritz and the CKC boys come up from San Antonio with one of the three Chevy II funny cars. Thanks for the memories, JimR |

I liked Garlits comment in a video a long time ago.Instead of calling the things they did cheating,he said some guys were "crafty".That has always stuck with me. |

Re: Old photo album
Great pictures! La Place was the site of the inaugural Cajun Nationals as somebody said earlier. My best memories of that race are a Jax beer truck and a pickup with barrels of hot mudbugs.

Re: Old photo album
The inaugural Cajun Nationals (open event) were held at La Place in 1976 but the powers to be soon realized that the facility was not going to be big enough so it moved to State Capital in 1977 when it became a National event.
Dwight, do you remember "Shake's Jambalaya' (sp)Trailer with huge pot ? La Place.......the only place i have watched dogs chase the parachutes on the big end. |
Re: Old photo album
todd, ur exactly right on. i started going to laplace dragway at the age of 12 1965 to be exact. i begged my dad for so long to take me and he finally did, and i was hooked ever since. i only lived 15 miles from there on a staight shot. i remember the dogs shooting out od the woods and chasing the dragsters chutes, it was hillarious. and yes shake became the official jambalaya king of the racers especially when the cajuns first had a race. if anyone remembers cueball wales, his shop was around the corner from me and id allways pass and see where he was headed to next. and albert weights, i may have his name spelled incorrectly, was nearby. back then that place was where u was headed on a sunday!! great memories, thanks for sharing.
casey whos ur friend thar forwarded them to u? |

Re: Old photo album
Dave,
Went to a points meet there in '79 to help Pete Smith when he was running Modified Elim. I was in high school at the time and my buddy was into photography and standing by the starting line shooting pictures. After a while, there were way too many people up there and they were interferring with the D-4 photog, Rich ???.. (The guy had a head of white hair) Anyway, he got pissed and told a cop to get everyone out except my buddy and some other guy. He ended up with some great pictures of that race. For you, La Place was your memory maker while for me it was Houston International Speedway in Dickinson. If I wanted to go anywhere, mom took me so that was my eighth birthday present (delayed about a month) with buddies in April of '69. I actually was there the last night they ran (Dec-87) so I have LOTS of memories of seeing some great and WILD stuff. Weren't you hanging out with Jim Schaechter at the Sports? I rode over to his pit on my moped to meet him and see his car since all him and I have ever done is e-mailed one another. His car looks like it would be a blast to drive. |
Re: Old photo album
Todd, yes i was with jim and mikey, they actually stayed at my home in Destrehan. i actually met jim and his brother joe when bob gipson came down to buy my n/s 65 malibu in 1999. and jim went right out a couple of months later and won the indy open. then indy in 2000. jim, joe, bob, and mikey are all great individuals. there all hard workers that have the same goal,to go fast! and i remember the old houston track, it was nasty when it rained. they should be here come see us next year, it would be a pleasure to meet u.:)

Re: Old photo album
Todd -
Remember when they held the Sportsnationals at the old Houston track? Rained so much they called the race. The entire pits was covered in water. We were afraid we would get stuck loading the car in the pit area so we drove the ramp truck out on to the track and loaded the car there, standing 6" deep in water. However, when the weather was right, you could fly on that track. |
Re: Old photo album
Dave -
Jim S. told me to give Mikey a nudge to get the Camaro done. Does it still have the black paint on it? Remember "I luv Auz" on it?? |
Re: Old photo album
Dwight, i remember that debacle or hell hole what ever u call it. we`ve been hit by many storms at many tracks thru the years, and i rank that one right at the top of the list.:) i also got a picture sent to jim thru bob rice of u driving mikes car @ indy. i added some wording to if u like either me or jim will post it.

Re: Old photo album

Re: Old photo album
Dave, did you see the picture Bob Rice posted on the Camaros in Stock/SS last Fall? It was the Auto Imagery picture from Indy that year I drove Mikey's car. I got the itch bad.
