Live from Atco, NJ ... National Open

I know its a little early for a live from report, but I had to do some business at Atco today. I figured I might as well bring the car and get parked. I know its only an open, but I thought it might be interesting to see if any records will be set along with the type of turnout we will have. I'm am sure there are many who can't wait to get out and race here in div 1 after a long and snowy winter.

A quick weather report for the day. It was very warm, in the upper 80's. The weather for tomorrows test and tune along with record runs calls for a little cooler, low 80's. The weekend forecast called for some rain Thursdays night into Friday morning with much cooler temps for the weekend. I just check the local forecast, and they are now calling for only a 20% chance of rain late Thursday into Friday morning. High temp will be in the low 60's for Friday and Saturday, with Sunday warming up to the low 70's. Man that wasn't a quick weather report was it.

The schedule calls for a test and tune along with records on Thursday. We get 2 runs on Friday along with record runs. Saturday we get one run and then eliminations. The schedules say the race will be run to completion on Saturday and Sunday is the rain date. Judging by the forecast and if it is correct it should be a nice weekend for racing, a little windy perhaps but still looks good.

Not many rigs here, its only wendsday. I did find a few stockers. Sam Murry, Ed Bednaz and Jim Boudreau. Talk with them for awhile, you know just bs about what's good and what's not with NHRA class racing. One thing will all have in common, we love stock eliminator and always look forward to racing.

I also talk to Mike Iacono and Chuck Veach, div 1 regulars , Mike is here testing his comp car, but will be shooting out to Vegas with Chuck, these guys will not being racing here this weekend, All there stuff is out west. I would love to make Vegas one year.

I will try to get some et's for the test and tune, and let everyone know if any records were set for tomorrow.

I will also keep you up to date and the weather.

Ken
There is a rumor floating around that the schedule has been changed significantly..
Can you confirm whether or not this is true and if so post the change?

Thanks & good luck

Re: Live from Atco, NJ ... National Open

Ed, I have only seen a few racer saving just one spot. It looks as if most racers in div 1 are respecting the new rules about saving spots. I think you should be able to park in your usually area.

Angelo, I have not heard anyone talk about a major schedule change. I talked to Kevin Sway for a bit and he did not indicate there would be any changes. If I here anything I will be sure to let everyone know. The weather looks to be pretty good for this race.

Morning everyone, just a quick weather report at 8:40 am.

Temp 75
Humd 50%
BAR 29.61
DA 2054 FT

Its a beautiful day, I don't think any records will be set today, it is supposed to reach the low 80's and with the low bar, it does not make for a fast day.

We should start the test and tune after 10:30.

I will be back later with some pictures and et's.

Will do Joe.

Anne, I will be sure to get some pictures of the Anthony's Mustangs. Just a few shots to start off this weekends racing. The green Corvette is absolutely beautiful.

Jacques Blais in his GT/EA 98 Mustang will be going for the record along with Gary Parker's H/SA Camaro today. I will post the numbers when I get them.

Joe DeMarzo in his G/SA Nove went a 11.08 at 118
Jim Conte in his C/SA Mustang went 10.46 at 126
Gary Parker in is H/SA Camaro went 11.15 at 117. He stumbled of the line, he thinks it would have been a 11.10, still not good enough for the record that is at 11.00 now.

The weather is not so good for records, latest weather.

Temp 84
humd 39%
bar 29.56

Cross tail wind 5mph

We are done for the day, the test tune went well. You could get as many runs as you needed. You pretty much went to the lanes and they pulled you right out. We only had to wait once for about 30 min when a top sportsman car could not slow down and went into the sand trap. The car was a little banged up, but the driver is okay, I don't know his name. It was a yellow cavalier.

It was a weird day weather wise. The air was mostly hovering around 3000 ft. Not much barometer, 29.45 on my last run. The humidity was only 32% and the temp was 87 to 89 most of the day. The wind was a cross tail about 5 to 10 mph and I am sure it helped with the et and mph. My last run the wind hit me pretty hard about the 1100 ft mark, it pushed the car to right more then I would have liked. I would say it was a fast 3000ft. Numbers were not good, but the wind helped.

No records were set as far as I know. Jim Boudreau in B/SA went a 10.29 at 129. The CJ's and Wally's Corvette did not run so well, I guess they are just trying to sort things out. Jim Conte went a 10.45 at 127 in C/SA and Frank Bialas in his Road Runner ran 10.56, not sure of the mph. I think he was in B/SA. I ran pretty well, did some tuning, 9.85 at 135.

I received a special request from Evan Smith for a picture of the boys from New Jersey. I know he misses everyone up here and the same goes for us. John Bender wanted to say hello to his Family visiting Evan down in Tampa, FL. I also get a nice shot of John's car.

The weather is supposed turn much cooler for tomorrow. I will try to get a qualifying sheet for stk and ss.

That's it for today, I will be back in the morning with a weather report before the first time shot.

Side note: Sorry for the not so good pictures, I think I need a new camera. I'm going to give my cell phone camera a try for tomorrow.

Good morning everyone, its 8:10 and the rain has stopped. It rained most of the night, heavy at times, but the local forecast is for it to clear later this morning.

Weather conditions this morning:
Temp 58
Humidity 70%
Barometer 29.62
DA 815FT

Its mostly cloudy but it looks like it is starting to clear. I am sure we will not be starting on time this morning, I would think noon will be more like it. The pits do not look to bad nor does the track, but it is humid and I think it will take some time to get the track dry.

Joe it was nice to meet you also, your pictures put mine to shame.

Don, they ran Super Street. Stock was about to run and it started to sprinkle. Nothing heavy but it just now stopped. I think it will be a good hour before they call us back to the lanes, but the sun is finally coming out. I think Jack Matyas must be floating around here some place, he tends to make the rain gods angry.

While we wait for the track to dry I got some more pictures.

I promise I will get a bunch of super stock pictures, I know I have been neglecting you guys, where is Tom Sheenan when you need him.

Re: Live from Atco, NJ ... National Open

I just got back from my second run, They just called it for the day. I think it was for the wind, it start picking up. Cross head wind 8-15 mph.

Below is the 1st round qualifying sheet for stock. I had to take a picture and kind of cropped it together, its not great but I think you will be able to read it. Just click on the yellow bar to enlarge it.

The first run was tough. the track was cold and I was moving around pretty good. The weather was good but the wind was bad.

temp 60
humid 42%
bar 29.66
da 729ft
head cross wind 8-15mph

I pick up along with a few others on the second run. 9.83 at 134.70. Jim Boudreau 10.19, not sure about the mph. When I get the second sheet I will post it, along with super stock.

I will be back later with more pictures and hopefully the qualifying sheets.

Here is the second round of Stock. I could not get the Super Stock qualifying sheet. I will do my best to get Super Stock for tomorrow. Super Stock only had one shot today because of the wind. I will start another post with the pictures I got of Super Stock.

I got bunch of Super Stock pictures, I will add them in two posts. No records were set today, I guess the head wind was the reason. The DA was good, about 600 ft most of the day, but the wind canceled it out. Tomorrow we get two shots and then go into eliminations. What ever we do not finish up with will be run on Sunday.

The weather for tomorrow will be cold in the morning and warming up to 65, but the wind is supposed to be the same, lets hope they are wrong.

Joe, I am not sure who owns the cars but I guess you can figure it out on the qualifying sheet.

Morning everyone, its a cold 48 degrees but the sun is out, unfortunately it still is windy. Not sure if we will start at the 9:30 schedule start time. Cars as still coming in and if the wind would just die down a little, it would be a great day for racing. It is supposed reach 65 today with sun all day.

For the most part racing has been good, not hearing of any major complaints and there is no talk of the issues that plague this forum. When you get to the track, most are just happy to be racing. Funny how when your at the track you here less about what's wrong with NHRA and more of, man its nice just to be racing.

I went around the pits just to find out what's new in division 1. Of coarse Wally Zalak's beautiful Corvette is the talk of the pits. "Bubba" Russell Linke has a new ride this year. Running C/SA in his 97 Camaro replacing 85 H/SA Camaro. The new Cobra Jets owned and raced by Anthony Bongiovanni are not running like Anthony would like, but I can assure you these cars will be on top very shortly.

I had a Chance to talk to Ed Fernadez for while, Ed is a regular on Class Racer as most know. Ed has a good heart, and is very entertaining, although he does like to push the buttons of our Class Racer members.

I will try to get the final qualifying sheets for stk and ss later today. I will be back to let everyone now when we are under way, but may not be able to give many live reports during the day.

Current weather numbers.

Temp 47
Humd 42%
Bar 30.12 and rising
DA -654ft
cross head wind 8-12 mph

Brrrrrrrrrr................My wife was kind enough to drop me off at the track this morning and what a surprise -- this is not Spring - even if the temps are in the high forties it feels like much less .As for the wind -- Kenny is spot on - bigtime crosswind is evident and I would be surprised that at some point if it continues this race will turn into an 1/8 mile event .

SuperStreet has been called to the lanes but no one has shown up yet - Stock to follow .I'm told everyine will get two hits at the track before eliminations .............later .

On a brighter note the air is much better today ...........
