Re: "7" Plymouth's You Just Had to Have.
Paul,
As an alternate I would add the oft maligned 426S powered '64 Savoy, 4 speed with 4.10 Suregrip. While this combo might not make a great race car the literally ruled the streets in the part of Jersey that I lived in, besides it was much more streeable than the other combo's. Perhaps you could make it "eight" with the '62 Savoy 413 Max Wedge cars JimR |
Re: "7" Plymouth's You Just Had to Have.
During my high school days in auto shop we often worked on teachers cars.......One of my friends and I got to drive a teachers new car.......1964 Plymouth Fury Convertible. 426 with a single 4 barrel I believe it was with a 4 speed.....black with a red interior....
That car was pretty fast and my friend just about spun it around on a "test drive".......he was a notorious nut behind the wheel and the teacher was a "cool guy" stud......gym teacher and coach......We blew the rear in a Valiant one day.........stick 6 couldn't take the "test drive" |
Re: "7" Plymouth's You Just Had to Have.
I would make the '70 or '71 HemiCuda a convertible, 4 speed 410 Dana, in triple black, or a high impact color. The ragtop may be heavier, but it's a great retirement package.

My "Hemi " story.
In about March of 65 on a Friday night, I went to a down town Dodge dealer with the order form for a '65 Hemi Car. Ruth gave me the O.K. I asked him for some 'help" , after showing him our record with our 59 Pontiac, he said 'sure' to my surprise, but come back Saturday morning & we would fill out the papers and sign a "deal" When I got their about 8:30 am, the place was covered with cops. "What happen I asked" to a cop. He said the owned had shot himself last night, I said I had talked to him about 8:00 pm, So they asked me a lot of ?'s.. We ended up buying a 65 Chevy Impala 283 4speed car two door hardtop. |

I agree with most of the choices. But I would substitute one of the non-Hemi combos for a '70 AAR Cuda - 340 6-bbl.

Re: "7" Plymouth's You Just Had to Have.
I'm a little surprised that the first, and arguably most valuable of all, the '64 A-864 aluminum Race Hemi Savoy hasn't been listed. It also had aluminum doors which the Max wedges did not. It might have been one of the lowest production cars as it was a mid year introduction.

Now we've gotten to the most confounding part of this whole thread. How do we narrow it down to just 7 of any brand?Didn't mean to hijack the thread, the last comment of "any max wedge of Hemi ' is cause sufficient.

My favorite car was my 65 Plymouth Satelite, 383 4 speed. Thats all I could afford at the time. Traded it in for a 69 Plymouth, 4 speed GTX. If I could go back in time, my choice would be a 64 Savoy. After 69, I really didn't like any of the body style's that Plymouth hade to offered.

Re: "7" Plymouth's You Just Had to Have.
My favorite Plymouth would have been a '64 Valiant S/S car that came with a Stage III Wedge/727/8.75" powertrain, with an aluminum front cap, and mini tubs.
But Ma was all about B Bodies, and the new Hemi, and never built it.... :( I think this combo might have kicked the Hemi's ***... Maybe they thought so too... and, that's why we never saw one. |
Re: "7" Plymouth's You Just Had to Have.
Bang for the buck
70 340 4-speed 3.91 gear Duster Hammer |
Re: "7" Plymouth's You Just Had to Have.
In early 1972, I found a "rolled-over" '71 Dodge Demon with that exact powertrain (4-speed) in a junkyard (13,000 miles on the car) and bought the whole shebang from fan to rear end (3.91) for $500.00 and dropped it into a '64 Valiant 2-door sedan.
Everything just bolted in, including the driveshaft, which I never understood, because the Demon's wheelbase was 2" longer.... I only had to change the speedometer cable and the oil pressure sending unit (and run the lower radiator hose to the other side.) With some 7" slicks left over from my sedan delivery days, and fenderwell headers (the stock manifolds were too wide), a 4.56 gear and a Lunati, "Riddler" cam, it ran mid-12's.... with the otherwise stock engine. This one came with a 750 cfm Thermoquad (first year for it.) A fun street car for very little $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ |
Re: "7" Plymouth's You Just Had to Have.
My personal all-time favorite Mopar (other than a SS/AH car) is a 1967 RO23 Street Hemi Plymouth. I think it came from seeing slides as a kid of the Maddia Brothers '67 car (now Danny Smith's) SS/DA.
My favorite Chevy body is a 1966 Chevelle (because of Dan Scott's car in the real NMCA Pro Street wars). Ford, probably a '68 Cobra Jet Mustang convertible would be my dream car. |
Re: "7" Plymouth's You Just Had to Have.
1. 440 six pac cuda with the high impact orange
2. AAR cuda 3. 71 Duster 340 4sp 4. 63 Max Wedge Wagon 5. 66 Hemi Wagon 6. 69 1/2 road runner six pac 7. 70 Hemi Superbird Too bad it's not Dodges too. An orange 69 Charger with a Hemi and "01" on the side and confederate flag on top would be cool for A or B/SA :) Might have to talk to Travis to allow the front grill guard though. |
Re: "7" Plymouth's You Just Had to Have.
Unfortunately, Santa Claus only limited me to a Lucky '7'.
Many other great choices out there. I had to put the 69' 440 Cuda "M" Code in their, because I had one. For shear excitement, the 69' Cuda was a monster, mainly because you weren't sure if those little drum brakes would stop the car. And manual steering too, like driving a truck. Not the greatest car to drive for a long distance, but for a mile or so, like the 'wildest'' roller coaster ride. I miss that car! Steve Hagberg, Yes, the 1964 A-864 Savoy Race Hemi is probably the rarest. All aluminum nose, 'doors', front radiator support, and some with an aluminum bumper. The first with 'Corning' glass, and liteweight seats. The lightest of the early cars at #3200 lbs. With an automatic transmission and 4.56 gears, would make an excellent 'Sunday Go-To-Church-Car' |

The '69 Road Runner 440 6-pak 4-speed would have to be in that list. When properly tuned and driven, they were brutal on the street.

My all-time favorite would be a '70 383 Roadrunner, followed by a '70 Duster 340.

Re: "7" Plymouth's You Just Had to Have.
I think HEMIDARTDAVE wins the actually owned "7" car Plymouth list.
Well over a Million $ in cars. Todays dollars. Had to add one more to the list. 1965 Plymouth Valiant V-200 Sedan 273/235HP Commando 4-speed. The fastest and lightest 273 Commando at 2714 lbs. A perfect 11.55 wt/hp break. In 65' with the true Hurst shifter and linkage, and that hollowed out low-restriction muffler along with 3.91 optional gears.gears. Capable of 15.10's, right off the dealership lot. If you knew had to order one back then, you couldn't get the Formula S package on the Valiant (which was available on the Barracuda's), but you could order the Performance group package with a special order (Firm-Ride HD shocks, heavy-duty 6-leaf rear springs, HD front sway-bar and wider wheel rims 5" x 14"), as well as the 8 3/4" Sure-Grip Posi rear. Re: "7" Plymouth's You Just Had to Have.
Those little 1965-6 Valiant Commando 273 cars were some of the biggest sleepers on the street back then......the slant six models out there must've outnumbered the 235 hp Commando V8's by at least 100,000 or more....to 1, Hi- performance Valiant Commando models were also very difficult to identify......on the street, you had to come up from behind them and see that big rectangular "box" exhaust tip to know what you were about to deal with....or, looking from the side, they had barely noticable small "Commando" emblems on each front fender. The Valiants--- coupe, hardtop, station wagon, and convertible are still some of the rarest and coolest stockers and superstocks running down the track today....BTW, has Paul C., or anyone else here ever owned or even seen a 235hp Commando 273 Valiant (from factory) '65 or '66 station wagon? I have never seen one here in New England.....also, anyone here know of any people class racing that 273 Commando 4 bbl. '65-6 Valiant station wagon combo? ;) WJ

WJ,
On the 65' and 66' Valiants The availability on the 273/235HP Commando 1965, V-200 (2-door sedan, 4-door sedan and convertible) Signet (Hardtop and convertible) Not available on the V-100 or Station wagon 1966, V-100 (2-door sedan and 4-door sedan) V-200 (4-door sedan) Signet (Hardtop or convertible) Not available on the Station wagon. Never saw a wagon with the Commando. Did see a Ken Connely (friends with the Centolanza's) run a 1965 V-200 4-door sedan, black with a 4-speed "Prince Valiant" run in E/Stock in 1966 at Dover.
