new rules for '68 Hemis
I heard that one reason the '68 SS/AH cars have gotten quicker is some recent new rules for those cars.
Can anyone filll me in on what those new rules might be, and how they're being implemented to enhance those cars' performance? Additionally, the '67 RO 23 cars seem to be a bastard engine; competition hemi reciprocating assy. and heads with a street hemi-style intake. Is that true, and how does that intake affect the HP factor (compared with the short cross ram on the earlier cars???) That emgine may have been on the '66 motors, too.... Can't remember. Please excuse my ignorance... |
Re: new rules for '68 Hemis
clutchless trans and a million rpm.

Re: new rules for '68 Hemis
Just put an original 68 car next to a 2010 car and look. And that's just the beginning.

Re: new rules for '68 Hemis
Ed, I'm sure the intake manifolds have changed dramatically, but I am ignorant of what kind of changes these cars enjoy that are not allowed on other "pure" Super Stock cars, if any.
Just curious.... and thanks for any specific information. |

Rack and pinion's? Tubular front end pieces? Are you still refering to the 68cuda only? Or Superstock Mod etc?
|
Re: new rules for '68 Hemis
There are NO tube front end or rack and pinions on the 68 cars. Stock control arms and steering boxes on the 68's. Dyno

top fuel camshafts, Honda Rotating assemblies

I know more than that but I'm not endangering my life by telling.

Re: new rules for '68 Hemis
Maybe pro stock cam shafts and Honda bearings, all we need is titanium valves to save some $$$ in the long run.

Lots of CASH!!

Thanks.... I think.....

Re: new rules for '68 Hemis
I like some of the smart aleck comments posted, lol. Seriously though there has been many changes over the years to squeeze out a couple more tenths out the engines, with high tech engine components, transmissions, or on the cars suspension. Some of the $$$ money these guys spend on their cars today is unreal, as compared to what an original were built to do.

Re: new rules for '68 Hemis
Bill, the most important rule change was intake modifications (inline as opposed to traditional cross ram) that prompted higher rpms which led to very stiff valve springs which led to etc.
|
Re: new rules for '68 Hemis
It's not all engine mods that are just for Hemis.
Look real close at some of the creative body modifications. |
Re: new rules for '68 Hemis
Next time you're in the pits someone should snap some pictures of these trick parts that they are using on today's Super Stocker's and lets see how well that goes over, lol.

Re: new rules for '68 Hemis
Adger,,,,creative body modifications?? I guess its been a while since I've studied a 68' Cuda or Dart body,,,or else my eyes are getting bad. Care to elaborate on what we're looking for? You don't have to mention any names,,,just say "some Cudas are doing this, (insert creativity) and some Darts are doing this." (insert other creativity) I'm deffinately going to look a little closer at the next national or divisional event I go to.
Thanks for your info,,,take care. Danny Durham |

Re: new rules for '68 Hemis
One of the tricks was just like we did in stock, figure out a way to run more RPM and still make power. For stock it was valve springs and Shubecks, for super stock it is valve springs, light bottom end (within the rules), re-aligning the push rods, tons of mods on the heads and basically in-line carbs on the intake. I would agree that some may have pushed the limits on the body and chassis but the car still has to weigh a minumum of 3210 ... still impressive to run 8.20's at 160 with a 42 year old car ..
I love to watch the Hemi shootouts, but it has turned into a mega dollar class. You almost have to have your own dyno and engine development to catch up or get ahead. Same thing that happened to top stock, cost way too much and only a few could afford to compete .. |
