1960's Ford Indy V-8

Anybody know much about these engines? As you can see on the blog I have a pretty cool document from an SAE presentation on this. I'm wondering how long these engines were produced, how many made and how much when new. An interesting piece of automotive history for sure.
Of course maybe somebody like Alex Denysenko will want one for SS/GT in a '63 Cobra :)

The DOHC Ford Indy engine was an offshoot of the stock block Ford Indy engines of 1962 . More power was needed , so an overhead cam version was developed . A J Foyt took over the production of the DOHC Indy engine in about 1967 . The insignia on the cam covers went from FORD to FOYT .
Jim Busby had a twin engine dragster in the late 60s that used these engines . Sounded like nothing else on earth .

Ford also swapped the heads from side to side so the intake ports were on topside and exhaust ports on bottom side and Foyt ran them in sprint car some.. There was also one in a 67 Mustang that Autolite ran Bonneville with it was on cover of Hot Rod Mag.

Anyone wanting to see those headers and the car itself , go to the web site www. twotogo.homestead.com . Lots of info on most of the twin engine rails .

Is this the same engine thay Jimmy Clark ran in Formula racing in europe?

A great photo from above showing not only the headers but also the complexity of the engines is on the twotogo web site under In-line 2 and also under Inline 1966 to present .

I believe this engine was tried for a short time in F1 in the 1960s

Mike,
Bruce McLaren tried it reduced to 3.0L in about 1966 or 1967. It was not competetive with the Repco engine which was based on another US engine. (GM 3.5L BOP engines as it was called)
thanks, Roland

Ed,
This picture is of the four cam 255 cubic inch Indy Ford V8. The intake ports were inbetween the camshafts and by swapping heads from left to right the exhaust could exit either down for front engine cars or in the middle for rear engine cars.
thanks

Ed,
The Ford V8 used by Jimmy Clark in Formula One was built by Cosworth for Ford. It was not based on any kind of production engine.
thanks

I once had a Cosworth Vega. I guess I'm just a sucker for high winding engines like the Vega and this Indy Ford.
I've had some powerful OEM Muscle cars and of course we all wish we shoulda / woulda / coulda kept them, but that Vega still ranks high on my list of those I should have kept (it was almost new condition and I paid $3500 for it). If not so much what it was, what you could do with it. I still say if I won the lotto I would build one for T/S. Heck, maybe Super Stock would be even more fun. That engine and RWD layout has the right hardware and so much potential.

Re: 1960's Ford Indy V-8

The Cosworth Vega was a fun car to drive . The Vega just sort of dissolved from around the Cosworth engine though .
For high winding , high tech engines go to You Tube and type in Renault F1 engine burning down . I don't know what the burning down part has to do with the video , but it's a dyno test of a Renault F1 engine on a race simulation dyno . 18,000 rpm going up and down the gears . You'll want turn the volume up .

I received this photo today . Shows the wildest looking twin engine dragster ever built . Also the wildest sounding .

It's called an inline Autolite or Cross-Boss and was used for awhile on the Ford Trans Am cars. There were two sizes, 1425 CFM and a smaller one which I think was around 800 CFM?
Here's some pictures
