What would you do?
If you knew another racer was breaking the rules would you report him and get him suspended or wait and hope for him to do the right thing?
|
Re: What would you do?
Report the "rumor" to a techman. Then let nature take its course.
|
Re: What would you do?
why not just talk to him directly?

Re: What would you do?
I have heard people say you are banned for a year if you get caught cheating. Is that true? Stiff penalty, but I think our legal system should be as tough. Also ND mentioned that the gentleman who won Stock at Indy was previously DQ'ed for a piston number infraction. If so, did he sit out for a year?

Re: What would you do?
Do you think the infraction of the rules is an advantage? Does this competitor race in your in your class and effect you directly ie heads up? Has this competitor been through tech and tear downs? If the answer is yes to these questions use the same technology and beat them. If you cannot then move on.

By your way of thinking, if the guy uses ported heads then you should use them also! Move on? No. It's called RULES. They are there for a reason. Jim |
Re: What would you do?
wow. Too many variables to answer with three options in a poll. If I know a guy is blatantly cheating, such as claiming 396 with a 427 or running a carburetor that is way too big, or nitrous or delay box, etc. then I would go directly to tech and point it out, and possibly protest him if need be. If its something less obvious ( suspected acid heads or wrong pistons, light crank, etc) then I would only protest him if it were someone in my own class, and only if i was sure. Something grey area or unstated, I'd say is probably racers just being creative. I may ask tech if "XXXXXX" is legal, and if not they may want to keep a look out. If its something that has no measurable effect, or is just nit picking then its not worth worrying about.
I'd also venture to say thay if you got on the wrong side of someone in tech, they could probably find something to throw you out for. Usually they are good about small items, saying "change that before you come back". I most definitely would not want a reputation as a "tattle tale" amongst the tech department. I've found that most of the division guys are very helpful, I never hesitate to call them if I have a question. |

Re: What would you do?
I would take what I thought to be an infraction, to a tech offical and ask him to explain what was acceptable to me. I would not tell on the competitor, unless it cost me a heads-up match strickly because of the infraction. In other words if his/her car was .20 quicker than mine, and the infraction was worth .05 I think I would let it go. It's sad that the rule book paper and the ink are starting to merge together...it's all turning gray. I had a situation in which I wanted to do something. I called Wesley Roberson and he said absolutely not. As I did my own investigation I observed multiple infractions. I brought that to the NHRA (no names) after a few months of hounding Bruce, he told me to go ahead as I wanted. The wording was changed the following year in the rule book, to provide this infraction as legal now. My point was that I did not want to make waves, but simply wanted to be afforded the same book as everyone else.

Before any of you go to tech and and turn people in, please be level headed and take into consideration possibly fatal repercussions. People do STUPID things for STUPID reasons.

Re: What would you do?
I had that happen just recently when I was a spectator at a "MAJOR" race, the participant had the wrong horse power for the engine he was declaring. I questioned him about it and he said to me that you can "round down your horsepower to the next equal number". I told him that I didn't think that it worked that way, which I know it doesn't. I didn't have a dog in the fight, but I did remark to a tech official about our conversation. I didn't mention the car or the driver, just questioned the tech official. I don't know if anything was done or changed to correct the weight that the car was missing, I'm hoping that someone else caught the mistake.

Casey I have had them round down my weight, which I assume is normal.

Round down your weight and HP? What are you people smoking? (I want some!)

Re: What would you do?
Mine was rounded down 7 lbs on my window sticker at a divisional this year. When I asked the tech inspector about it (not that it mattered) he said that's they way he/they do it.

Re: What would you do?
Very fine line between cheating and pushing the enveloppe. Ported Acid heads are just one of the ambiguous definition of the rule. Interpretation of any laws can be taken many ways. Smokey Yunick was quoted many times saying" that if you aren't cheating you'aren't trying". How about someone who make's a genuine mistake or a manufacturer wrong number on a piston. Unless it's nitrous or flagrant use of time delay and axle counter let the tech department take care of it(most are quite efficient to find or point out where you aired.lolCR

Re: What would you do?
I think Casey is saying we round down/up weight when it it is an odd number. For example my weight is 3367 in H/SA (11.5 X 278 plus 170) and it is rounded to 3365 as per NHRA.
If I can round my HP to 275 from 278 I have been giving away some weight, lol |
Re: What would you do?
Let those who are without sin cast the first stone.I only know one being in that catogory, but I don't think he ever had a S/SS car.

Re: What would you do?
IMHO, if you would blatanty "cheat" then you are nothing more than a liar and a thief. Period.
BUT I am suprised at how many times I have seen the Rule Book "misinterpreted" and I do believe that it is vaguely written intentionally for just that reason. Also, refer back to Eddy's previous post. |
Re: What would you do?
Not one stock eliminator crank has been inspected....really?
All I know is my fathers B/SA is so rule compliant and truly stock and we used to be the fastest back in 1993-1994 ....I know cutting down the crank and, offset piston pins along with lightening the crank as well with making our stock intake manifold act like a single plane with micro holes where tech can't see and a lot more stuff has our combo to be....well...very fast...not our stuff but everyone else's...I'm sure if I was in teardown and lead the tech to more of these such gray areas we could all play on the same playing field, otherwise its a joke.....We are the most legal car out there and being stomped on......its not fun....not fun at all. |

here in division 3 travis usually know who legit whos close and who he'd love to teardown if he ever gets the chance...it is nice that we have travis > he is under appreciated, often maligned (even by his employers) and definitely underpaid.
captain jack oh by the way, id probably toss them under the bus... maybe personally :) |
Re: What would you do?
If I were a particapant rather then a spectator at the race where the other racer had the incorrect weight to horsepower on his window, I would tell the racer and give him a timely manor to correct the issue before I would speak to any official with car number and driver's name. The weight difference was about 45 lbs, which isn't alot, but it's what NHRA says you have to carry.

What did you here or do you know. Didnt see you in Medford. |
Re: What would you do?
One verbal warning to allow said racer to fix, repair, replace illegal items.
if said racer does'nt correct it. drop the hammer. now with the lowered index's i'm sure there has been some questionable practices? |
Re: What would you do?
Hey Westy,
I lost a rod bearing in the wagon last weekend and I'm still having valve float issues with the Hemi still so we stayed home and worked on the Duster instead. Kelly want's a faster racecar so the old duster is getting a stocker 340 and will be ready for next year. E/SA maybe. . . |
