Same story different people
I recently read one of the post that said check out the stories on DRC. As I scrolled down the page I found out it was Lee Zane and Gracie Howell. I have nothing against any of the racers and their families that get articles done on them. It just seems like we are reading and reporting on the same types of people over and over again, high end race teams or professional drivers. Where is the meduim level racer or even the low budget racer at. It would be nice to know how they got started and how they enjoy the sport. Everyone knows the big name racers by now they always get talked about and their heads get bigger and bigger. Isn't it about time we learn more about the other guys, you know the ones that knock off big name racer and race teams? The ones that pay the entry fees and pay for their families to enjoy the race for the sake of being there together. Hell an added bonus would be winning a class race or the event. Rasing a class wally with their son who just returned from Iraq or Afghanistan. Looking at their hero as they climb out of what most drivers would consider a toy or a piece of metal and seeing and feeling the joy and emotions of them just racing. Having their sons or daughters emailing and checking the websites following thier father or mother racer. These are the kind of stories and articles that need to be posted on DRC and other racing websites.

Re: Same story different people
Grace and Bill Howell are a high end race team?

Re: Same story different people
jealousy is a bitch

Re: Same story different people
Great story on Gracie Howell. Just for everyone's information Bill Howell is one of my major backer of the stats beside Jeg's. Without Bill's help and friendship i wouldn't be doing this gig.
And hey my son comes home from Afghanistan next month and I know nothing will be said about it, And no biggie, we are just damn glad to see him get back in one piece. He already did 2 years in Iraq before that. |
Re: Same story different people
I need to make a fresh bowl of popcorn for this one..............

Re: Same story different people
I think there is a sponsor Howell printing are they part of that?
|
Re: Same story different people
I agree with Hemikid, it would be nice to see some of the lesser-known racers get some ink as well.

Re: Same story different people
I agree with Hemikid too. I don't think it's jealousy I think we are tired of reading about the same racers all the time. I would like to read about some engine builders and some racers like Brian Oakes, or the Armstrong's. It is just my opinion , but I have nothing against the people that they have written about in the past.

Re: Same story different people
Nitro Joe, please pass along a big "thank you" from us to your son. We really appreciate his service to our country. He is a genuine American hero.
After this weekend's race at Maple Grove, I'd suggest the next sportsman racer story be on Ed Fernandez. I believe that on the hood of his Gremlin it reads "powered by social security". You can't get anymore low budget than that. Here's a guy with a slower, lower classed car enjoying a fair level of success in NHRA class racing. Who wouldn't like that story? Hey Dan Moore, you're #1. :D RIP Mark Graham |
Re: Same story different people
Joe I think you have a great idea! 'Ol Ed deserves a page on him in the mag! Jim

Re: Same story different people
If anyone has a suggestion for a racer who you believe should be profiled on DRC, send in the suggestion. To do so, go to the Home page and on the bottom of the masthead, you'll see a link for "Feedback." Click on that link, fill out the form and send it in. The Feedback will go to Rick Green at DRC. Or, you can send suggestions to me at jsamuel@fastnews.net and I will forward them on.

Re: Same story different people
Joe,
I agree that Bill and Gracie are top notch and deserving of all the ink they get in recognition of their accomplishments. And, I also agree with others here and want to thank your son for his service to our country! It is greatly appreciated! David The New Hemi Guy |

Re: Same story different people
Joe,
Glad your Son is coming home safely, please give him our thanks for making us a bit safer. It would be nice to see some articles on low budget racers and for the most part most of the guys and gals on this site work with very limited budgets. I have a full sponsorship from my Mastercard and Social Security so I guess that makes me a high budget racer. JimR |
Re: Same story different people
Here is a story I wrote about myself, nothing great.

Re: Same story different people
My story is simple. I chose to join the USAF in a combat career field while my father continues to race with his own money (no sponsors) because he enjoys racing. Again, nothing against those race teams with sponsorship. I was just throwing an idea out there to the other racers encouraging them to voice their opinions. I appreciate the ones that have come forward and can see where there does need to be more stories or articles about the middle to low end racers. But it gets boring reading a story about how so and so won again and are advancing to the semi's or finals. Big deal, same old song and dance. I am personally more entertained by reading the story about joe-nobody who built his own car in his own garage with his son/daughter/brother's help and beat the odds to make it to the next round. Racing is a home grown sport consisting of the top contenders and the guys that are starting at the bottom (because everyone has to start somewhere) and would like to see the articles reflect that rather than jumping on the bandwagon of whoever the flavor of the month is going to be. As for the jealousy comment and for those who feel the need to stick up for the high end race teams your comments were noted. It's just typical that people would rather join or encourage the high end teams to keep getting the publicity than go against them and risk the backlash of your actions. God forbid you don’t suck up to them all the time.

Re: Same story different people
Hey the story about Danny Bird after he won Memphis was pretty good.
|
Re: Same story different people
I think Bob Frye does a good job writing these articles. He recently wrote a great article about me, my family and car after I won SST in Columbus. if you get a chance read it. The article was written on October 6 or 7 and now is in the 2010 archive. I'm about unknown as it gets. You can't please everybody!

Re: Same story different people
While I completely understand the desire to see some of the lesser knowns also get coverage, a lot of the others that are now successful and now getting ink, went without any coverage for a long time too. So it is only now that they have earned their way into the ink.
It is kind of a crap shoot in that you have to be the story of the moment , and have a reporter there to see it, and hope he thinks his readers want to hear more about you than the guy pitted next to you. I am not saying that it is all luck, but timing plays a big part. And once again, reality shows that life isn't always fair.. But I still stand by my comment about Gracie and Bill being good people deserving of good ink. David The New Hemi Guy |
Re: Same story different people
I dont see any big sponsors on the Howell cars besides he worked his *** off building a printing business for many years. Why should he not spend his money on what he loves and has been at also many years....drag racing. The last few years he has been able to go to more races with his daughter and I hope they win a few big races.

Re: Same story different people
Can somebody tell me who the big money
