That should be a 283 block.
"L" means December and the "7" means 1957
so that should be a 1958 283 block.

Unless it was a service block. That casting number was used on 265s and 283s in '57. 265s were serviced until 1964.

Hey guys.
This is Carroll Caudle's collection of years and years in the business.
I have been told that he has a very large supply of cores.
I'm sure an experienced Modified /Gas-Ect.-Ect. racer like him knows the difference between a 265 and 283.
You might give him a call. He has way more than what is listed here. I think he is selling some shop equipment, too.

it is standard 265 bore , it was a pick up engine and they used the same block for 265's just bored to 265 not 283, we have sonic tested it and it will bore to 283 just fine !

I dont have any 997's left, but the block would work great for you ! I do have a set of 520 T heads , can you use them ?

Ron Steiner 11-02-2010 02:07 PM

Re: 283,327,305,307,blocks and cranks,heads
