Block Rust Removal
I have several blocks that were already machined but a thunder storm blew out the back wall of the garage and the humidity caused the blocks to surface rust on all machined surfaces.
Anyone know a good way to clean them up? JimR |
Re: Block Rust Removal
ever try soda blasting??? Seems to work with no metal removal---you blast it, wash it off with water then blow dry to remove water and spray Blaster or a marine fogger to protect from rusting--Comp 387

another product is
called Rust lick----Comp |
Re: Block Rust Removal
Jim, You can try getting a bottle of metal prep solution from ypur local body supply house......It's a very dilute acid made for prepping bare metal before bodywork. ...I've used it to clean cylinder walls that had light rust. .........just be sure to neutralize the surfaces with clear water and blow dry before oiling them down

Re: Block Rust Removal
We have used vinegar for rust on guns and tools. Works pretty well, plus it should kill any yeast infection.

Re: Block Rust Removal
Tree,
I picked up some stuff called Fluid Film at the PRI last year. This stuff is GREAT! It says "for quick and effective corrosion control and lubricant". Get some and fog the blocks with it. No rust or corrosion again! Jim |

Re: Block Rust Removal
Wow!
That's some amazing results but I would have to buy it by the 5 gal.cans in order to soak a block. I think I'll fill my parts washer with the stuff, not only will it clean parts but if we have a fish fry all you have to do is dunk the fish in the parts washer if you want vinegar.......cool! JimR |
Re: Block Rust Removal
You can use white Vinegar, also. Vinegar is acidic and will fairly gently remove the rust from metal, but be gentler on the other parts. I would rather use it over the more aggressive products on the likely chance it gets on things I don't want hurt.

Re: Block Rust Removal
I've had good luck using electrolysis on cylinder heads, should work good on a block. Just need a large plastic garbage can, battery charger(adjustable),soda wash and away you go.

Re: Block Rust Removal
Here is something that really works.
Get a plastic 55 gal. drum, add ~20 gal. of water, and 2 gal. of molasses (or any other 10:1 ratio quantity). Let it sit covered for 3 or 4 days. Place the engine block (or any other rusted metal) in the solution and let it sit for ~2 days. It will look like new with all of the rust removed from every nook and crannie. The fermentation process that takes place causes the solution to react with iron oxide (rust) and not with iron. The solution is good for about 3 to 4 months. The negative side of this process is the odor. After a week or two it can really begin to smell, so keep it covered. You can buy molasses at a farmers feed store or on the internet. |
