When we raced our 65 Plymouths some of the Coronets were Roy Johnson Tennesse Thunder, and Jerry Caros and the most raced ones of Bob Marshall and his other car driven by Bill Weekly

Marshall's and the TN Thunder are my picks. Although not as quick, Don Wann's Rettig Bros. SS/BA was nice looking back in the day.

I drove a bunch of those cars back in the day. Some of my freinds cars from up north...64 Hemi aluminum car of Tolle Polawic,65 A-990 of Jim Van Zee,, Gary Ostriches A990,Lee Smiths A-990, Bill Dagle A990. Any one have any pics of these cars?I have a bunch of old tapes of us running at Cordova, Cedar falls and Eddyville in the early 70's... thanks, Kurt H

Sam Hurley's "Mountain Hemi" was a beautiful car and I always liked Dick Landy's '67 WO23 Dodge.

I remember reading up on Bob Marshall's SS/BA "Dodge Material" a bunch in the car mag's. However, I also had the pleasure of watching Dennis Mauer's Blue & White Coronet at the drags in Denver back in the 70's & 80's.

Now knowing that Don Wann raced one of them too, makes me wonder if any of you have pics of his "Rettig Bro's" car, and of him...I'm certain he had a photo taken with his mustache in a "French Curl" like "Ringo" from the outlaw gunslinger days of the "Old West", but I don't have any of those 70's-80's magazines with me. Any collectors out here with that (I believe Super Stock & Drag Illustrated) magazine? I'm thinking he was racing in the Winter Nationals when the photo was taken, and he was running that Coronet in SS/BA. I told Steve that I remember seeing a photo of his dad like that, but I can't find the right magazine... :(

Yes, I just wish I could tell if he had that gunslinger looking mustache in it...I see one, but not very good...No wonder those '65 Coronets are amongst my favorite car to watch (and I wish someday to race in), all of them are SS/BAAADDD!!!!!

Another Coronet was from around Charleston,WV. belonged to the Boggess family with name I think was WV Hemi Charger. I remember a Dodge from Ohio I think that was owned by Furlongs I think.

Thanks Joe for showing that car again. It bums me out that the car (per my last chat with Dennis), is still collecting mothballs in old Littleton, Co.... :o I wish that I had the money to chase after that car, because I told him that if I could I would, and he'd be doing the engine again!!! Sigh, oh well at least I can dream about owning/racing that car.... :)

I don`t know if he still has it, but Jon Percys black & orange SS/A&BA Hemi Corenet out of Idaho was a really sweet car.

I think Percy's car is a Plymouth that Phil Mandella built. Or, did he have a different car before this one?

They still have that one and now a SS/AH 1968 Cuda also. I don't think
his dad sells any of the cars just adds more. But a very nice car non the
less.

Oooops, It`s been a few years since I saw Percys car at Mission Raceway & I guess my Ford mind had trouble remembering if it was a Dodge or a Plymouth. Sorry about that. It still is a great looking car, ain`t it?

I don't know performance wise, but I will agree Dennis Maurer's car with the paint scheme and Motor Fly's plus stance is my favorite Coronet!!

I don't remember the last time I actually saw that car in action, but I saw their Barracuda at Salt Lake City last year in June, and got a calendar of the Savoy. I think it's collecting mothballs too, which is :( x 2...

Gary, did you have any luck finding any other '65 A990 Coronets tucked away in someones barn somewhere...maybe you could start off with a clean rust free body and build your own '65 A990 tribute just like the one pictured above since you're such a fanatic about these old dodges. :)

Man, you sure know how to torture a guy...with that orange paint, I could add a bit of blue to it, and make a Denver Broncos looking racer!!! No I haven't because I need the money first. However, if I did have the money (probably nearly $100 grand +/- $50 grand more), I would probably see one at the Barrett-Jackson Auto Auction next January, and that would be cool if I was able to enter a bidding war with someone over one of them (I'd do my best to have enough money so I wouldn't get out-bid), and then of course I'd need to catch up with one of my Mopar racing buds like Steve Wann and/or Mike Coe to make it competitive in either SS/BA, or SS/CA (perhaps even Dennis himself if I could ever catch up with him...I left him a message Saturday, but I have yet to hear back from him). You're right I'm a fanatic about those cars, and I feel they belong on the track, and GOD WILLING, I'll be able to come into the money to not only buy but campaign one. Then I'll get to see what it feels like to cover the quarter-mile in the 9sec range!!! :)

Besides, I can't think of any car that looks as cool with those big Super Stock sized drag slicks as those A990 Coronets, or the Savoy/Belvedere/Fury's from 63-65....

By the way, if Bob Marshall can hold off those behind him in the current D3 Super Stock points standings, he has a good chance to win the Division 3 Championship this year in his SS/BA Coronet....Brad Zaskowski has the best chance at catching/passing him, but he has two 3rd round finishes he needs to improve on, and the closest race to him remaining will likely be in Bristol this weekend? I thought Dan Olding would catch Bob, but he wasn't able to at his 8th divisional recently. I wish Bob well, because that's one SS/BADD Coronet!!! :)

By the way, that shot you have of Dennis Maurer's A990 doing a burnout was at Thunder Valley Dragway in Marion, Sd., wasn't it? I have some great memories there, but I'd love to go back there with a car like his...again you sure know how to torture a guy, but thanks for the pics!!!

However, you now have to torture me with a wheelstanding shot of Dennis's BADD ride...I have some good memories of racing there too...say hi to the "We Want Steak" Team out there, and also "The Mopar ****" guy Larry too if you get down there before their season ends, will ya?
